Persuasive EssayAccording page R40 of the Literature textbook, “persuasive writing should”

• “Hook the reader’s attention with a strong introduction”

(This means that writers should begin their essays with a thought-provoking question or fact about the issue to gain the reader’s interest.)

• “State the issue and the writer’s position”

• Give opinions and support them with facts or reasons.”

(Never write, “in my opinion” or “I think that …)

• “have a reasonable and respectful tone” (formal tone)

• “answer opposing views” (Write about the opposite side of the argument and explain why your position is better.)

• “use sound logic and effective language”

• “conclude by summing up reasons or calling for action.” (a call to action means you encourage readers to do something!)
