    1. What is the Engineering School

    artnership between CVCC & U.Va.?U.Va.s School of Engineering and Applied Sciencewill join with CVCC to offer a program that woulda ow stu ents to earn a our-year engineering egreewithout leaving the Lynchburg community. Studentswill earn an Associate of Science in Engineeringdegree at CVCC and then take third- and fourth-yearclasses through U.Va. to earn a Bachelor of ScienceDegree in Engineering Science while at CVCC

What fields of study will be offered ?CVCCs program provides students with the basicfundamentals in engineering plus the generaleducation requirements needed to earn an associatesdegree and gain admittance to U.Va.s School ofEngineering. U.Va. provides a broader range ofoptions to meet the specific interest of students.Initially, students will be able to select from one ofthe following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering,Electrical Engineering, or Material Science

    Engineering. A itiona iscip ines may e a ein the future depending on industry demand andstudent interest.

    3. Why was the program developed?

    During the past 15 years, Virginias Region 2000has experienced an industry shift toward energyand electronics that has accelerated the demand forengineers and skilled laborers. Even local demanddemonstrates the need for several hundred engineers

    in the next few years. One of the primary goals of this

    program is to nurture local talent for the demandof local companies. In order to make this happen it

    as necessary to be able to provide for the educationneeds of Region 2000. This partnership allows for astudent to earn his/her engineering degree withoutleaving the area.

    . What are the admission requirements?

    n order to meet the rigid standards of U.Va.sengineering program, CVCC will establish an

    Associate of Science in Engineering curriculumthat will satisfy U.Va.s prerequisites for third-yearentry into the engineering school. CVCC will alsoprovide bridge courses to meet U.Va.s entrancerequirements for students currently enrolled in oneof its technical degree programs should theychoose to advance their education through U.Va.s

    ngineering Science degree program.

    3 years mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II,and Geometry),

    Admission to U.Va. Program: For guaranteed admissioninto the second two years of the program, givenby U.Va., the student must have completed his/herAssociate of Science Degree in Engineering with a3.4 grade point average . Students who do not meetthe guaranteed admissions requirements must take

    the SAT test and apply for admission into the U.Va.Engineering program.

    5. What is the math andscience requirement?

    The math and science requirements for theEngineering program are rigorous. A solid groundingin Geometry an Trigonometry are necessary orsuccessful completion of the math component. Thephysics required in this program is calculus basedan su stitutions are not possi e.

    Students will be required to take a math placementtest to determine their readiness for MTH 173.Those with deficiencies must bridge to MTH 173by taking additional math courses. Students withdeficiencies in math may not be able to completetheir associates degree within two years. CVCC willprovi e in ormation on a mission an e igi i ityrequirements. Students must provide officialtranscripts and take math placement tests.

    6. What if I am currently in or havecompleted college classes or have

    n associates degree?

    You may need to complete additional courseworkin math to fulfill the admissions requirementsof the Engineering program. To determine yourreadiness for MTH 173, you will be required to takea math placement test even if you have completeda math course in your associates degree. Studentswith deficiencies will bridge to MTH 173 by takingadditional math classes. Most students will need tobegin with pre-calculus and chemistry. Courses toprovide applicants with the appropriate backgroundin math will be offered.

    . Where will the classes be offered ?

    All CVCC and U.Va. classes will be offered in theLynchburg area. Students will also have the option ofattending the U.Va. campus in Charlottesville.

    9. When do classes begin ?

    The first classes for the CVCC Associates Degreebegan in August, 2007. The first class to enter the

    bachelors program from U.Va. is scheduled to beginAugust 2009.

    10. How much will it cost to take theseclasses and who pays ?

    Central Virginia Community Colleges tuitionis currently $88.15 per credit hour. The Collegeprovides information toattain nancia ai orall incoming students.

    Current tuition anfees for one academicyear at U.Va.: $ 7,370for Virginia residents.(For up-to-date costs,check the U.Va. transferadmissions website.)

    11. How will company sponsorship work?

    Students should first submit and application foradmission to the CVCC Engineering program. A listof applicants will then be sent out to the companieswho will decide - based on their own policies andprocedures - what students they will sponsor.Additional sponsorship information is available onCVCCs website, www.cvcc.vccs.edu.

    12. How long will it take me to completethis program?

    The program is designed for students to enter theU.Va. portion of the program in the third year if theyare full-time students and do not require additionalcoursework for math or science deficiencies. These

    students would comprise the programs firstgraduating class in 2011.

    13. What if I am accepted and cannotcomplete the program in four years?

    Wor ing stu ents wi e a owe to ta e more timeto complete the program. They will not be penalizedfor taking longer; however, every effort should bemade to complete the program as scheduled.

    14. Who will be my advisor once I completethe CVCC Engineering Associate Degree?

    Company sponsored students will be managed bythe Center for Advanced Engineering and Research(CAER) with assistance from U.Va. counselors. OtherEngineering transfer students at the junior and seniorlevel of the U.Va. program will be advised by U.Va.counselors. Please note that with the initial classsequence, U.Va. classes are not scheduled to begin inRegion 2000 unti 2009.

    15. Who will be teaching the classes?

    Qualified faculty from CVCC and U.Va. will teachthe classes.

    16. My child is in high school how can Iprepare him for this program?

    CVCC can provide this information, and works withcounselors from local schools to help students preparefor engineering and other careers.

    17. Is this program only open to studentsinterested in transferring to U.Va.?

    The student can opt to transfer into an Engineeringprogram at any four-year university. The college alsohas a guaranteed admissions articulation agreement

    ith Virginia Tech for their Engineering program.

    The advantage of the U.Va. partnership is that thedegree can be completed without leaving Lynchburg.
