    1. Professional ethics Professionalism over common morality and personal ethics. Ethical commitment. Professional engineering ethics prevent disasters and professional misconduct Registered engineers work under a legally enforced ethical code.

    Types of ethics or Morality:

    Common: murder, cheat, lie, steal. Personal: Set of moral beliefs that a person hold. Professional

    Ethics: Set of standards adopted by professionals. (code of professional responsibility or code of

    conduct) More important than personal morality

    Negative effects:

    There are rules and prohibitions. Engineers cannot reveal facts data or information without the consent

    of the client or employer except as authorized but law or this code

    Engineers shall not engage in known or potential undisclosed conflicts of interest that could influence or

    appear to influence their judgment or the quality of their services

    3 characteristics of engineering ethics as preventive ethics:

    1. Focused on causality2. Focused on consequence / outcome3. Mainly utilitarianistic

    2. Responsibility: Engineers should satisfy the standard of reasonable care. Responsible engineers practive good judgment, not only following rules.

    Obligation responsibility: Use their specialized knowledge and skills to begenfit clients and public.

    Responsible charge: A person in responsible charge has an obligation to see to it that the engineering

    project is performed in accordance with professional standards(ethical, technical) --- Blame

    responsibility

    . Third, corporations, like people, can be said to have "interests" that are not necessarily the same as

    those of the executives, employees, and others who make up the corporation. Corporate interests

    include making a profit, maintaining a good public image, and staying out of legal trouble.

    3. Framing the problem: Much of the content of engineering codes of ethics is based on the application of ideas of

    our common morality to the context of engineering practice.

    Line-drawing, comparing problematic cases with clear-cut cases (paradigms), sometimeshelps in resolving unclear cases

    For framing moral problems: Utilitarian ideal of promoting the greatest good and that ofthe respect of person

    Dtermining the facts:

    Moral disagreement sometimes = to disagreement in relevant facts.

    Determine Know and unknown facts.

    Claryfying concepts:

    Disagrement over concepts suach as safem substantial, hearlth and material impairment must

    be discussed.

    Conclusion:

    As members of this profession, engineers are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and

    integrity Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people.. Accordingly, the

    services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and must be

    dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare.
