Sellafield – Facility Modelling

As the demand for the efficiencies of nuclear energy grows, so does the demand for the most experienced engineers and consultants in the industry. With its unparalleled track record stretching over 60 years, Studsvik can offer expert and dedicated engineering and consultancy services and support in many key areas.

Wide ranging engineering and consultancy services

Nuclear SafetyStudsvik specializes in a wide range of radiology issues, such as build-up and migration of radioactivity, radiation protection and radiological impact of plant occurrences. We work with thermal hydraulics and neutron kinetics which are applied to transient and accident analysis. A variety of software codes related to these areas are used. In addition, we provide reviewing as well as analysis and are able to review and coordinate safety case updates in many different areas. Our services are provided to the nuclear industries and authorities in Sweden, Finland, Germany, the USA and Japan. We also provide a wide range of tailored courses and seminars.

Fuel and Core EngineeringStudsvik’s expertise in a range of reactor

designs is also employed to optimize fuel and core performance. These services can help enhance the reactor’s capability factor by reducing fuel and materials limitations during operation. They help reduce fuel costs by optimizing core reloads and verifying fuel integrity under anticipated operating conditions; and they can verify material lifetimes, improve safety and help avoid the need for unnecessary component replacement. Our methods for analyzing operational data related to leaking LWR fuel can guide plant operation in order to find the optimal compromise between maximizing electricity production and avoiding system contamination.

use in-core, in hot cells and in autoclaves for testing and analysing corrosion and water chemistry in nuclear power plants. We perform corrosion tests as part of materials integrity examinations, and can provide data related to stress corrosion cracking. We also perform studies to mitigate activity build-up in plants, which is another aspect of corrosion. Our computer codes are used to calculate LWR water chemistry characteristics accounting for the effect of the irradiation fields and additives such as hydrogen. A key output is the electrochemical potential (ECP), an important factor in estimating the risk and rate of environmentally-assisted cracking.

Design ServicesStudsvik provides a wide range of engineer-ing and consultancy support to both the nuclear and non-nuclear industries for ventilation, piped building services, EC&I and associated interfacing fields. These can include front end and optioneering studies; concept and detailed design of plant and equipment; survey and appraisal of existing services, and safety case and hazard assessments. We also advise on document preparation in support of commissioning and decommissioning operations.

Radiological ProtectionRadiation protection services are a key offering of Studsvik. We are an appointed Radiation Protection Adviser body in the UK, and we offer support to consultancy projects and the largest nuclear construction projects. We operate a range of shielding software codes including RANKERN; we also provide shielding and ALARA studies. In addition we are advisors to the UK Government of radiological and nuclear contamination issues.

Project ManagementStudsvik has a strong project management culture with a team of experienced Project Managers, Project Controls Specialists and Planning personnel who can be dedicated to customer projects. Through our experience of working within the Nuclear Decomissioning Authority (NDA) we understand the requirements for CT-15 approvals and can support customers in achieving these approvals on a first-time basis.

HVAC and Building ServicesStudsvik has one of the largest pools of nuclear heating, ventilation and air condi-tioning (HVAC) engineers in the UK, who

have provided support to operating and decommissioning nuclear facilities. Within this area, Studsvik can provide:• NuclearVentilationandContainment

Environmental ConsultancyWe assist customers in environmental option studies including Best Practicable Environmental Option and Best Practicable Means Studies. We also assist with environ-mental permitting of nuclear facilities in relation to environmental discharges and have specialised modeling software to predict the impact of emissions on the environment. We can undertake surveys for radioactivity, and can support site investigations, drainage inspections and site clearance surveys.

Waste ManagementStudsvik offers a range of engineering and consultancy support for waste management operations. These include front-end option studies; detailed design of plant and equipment; and consultancy on waste inventories, treatability studies and technol-ogy selection. Studsvik in Germany also prepares waste documentation for the final storage in Konrad.

DecommissioningStudsvik can provide consultancy and engineering services throughout the long and complex decommissioning process. from feasibility studies, planning and project management to practical dismantling work and the subsequent waste treatment: our services encompass the complete decom-missioning and dismantling process.
