“To duplicate the integration performed by Oracle in Exadata or Exalogic,

customers would have to test and integrate their own servers, conventional and

SSD storage, Infiniband network components and drivers; tune the OS

appropriately; install the DB; and make all necessary changes to the DB tuning,

which would include experimenting with placement of files on SSD versus

conventional storage and figuring out optimal buffer sizing. Forrester expects

that by successfully combining all this IP into an integrated offering, Oracle

Exadata and Oracle Exalogic will be a template upon which other vendors will

base future complex integrated offerings.”

11

Approach: Unique Environments for Each App

Pros

• Optimize stack for each app

• Update and scale each app

independently of others

• Some cloud, some non-cloud

Cons

• Heterogeneous environment, hard

to manage

• Low utilization and economies of

scale

• Cost of Managing disparate

• Lots of building

12

Approach: Virtualize

Pros

• Easier management

• Better utilization

Cons

• Virtual sprawl

• Provisioning and scaling not

application-specific or application-

aware

• Harder diagnostics and

management

• Still lots of building
