Pressure Sensors for Research and Development

Kistler Pressure Sensors…

From pioneer to technological leader –

Kistler has been involved in the develop-

ment, production and use of piezoelectric

sensors since the 50s. The company's

sensors have also played a key role in the

development of combustion engines over

this extended period. This striking success

reflects their "inside view" of the combus-

tion chamber as the only source of the

information needed to optimize combus-

tion for better efficiency and to minimize

harmful emissions.

Reliable Development Partner for Research and Industry

From lawnmower engine to marine diesel, Wankel engine to racing power plant – engine development without Kistler pres-sure sensors is inconceivable. Innovative capacity, close contact with the world's leading engine manufacturers and applica-tion expertise help explain why Kistler now sets the pace for engine measurement. Kistler always offers the best solution for accurate pressure measurement over a wide spectrum of sectors from extremely high-precision research to demanding racing applications.

Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors

As active designs, piezoelectric sensors can only be used for quasistatic rather than truly static measurement. They are ideal for dynamic applications. Piezo electric pressure sensors can be employed wherever rapidly changing pressures at temperatures of up to 400 °C have to be measured and recorded as accurately as possible.

In addition to quartz, particularly for un-cooled sensors, Kistler uses crystals devel-oped and grown in-house. These PiezoStar

crystals are characterized by high sensitivity and high thermal stability.

Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors

The piezoresistive principle is based on the semiconductor effect first described in 1954, which states that under mechanical stress semiconductors change their electrical resistance. Compared with the conventional strain gage measurement of the time, this opened up completely new applications. Since then further similar breakthroughs have included the thin film technique on metal and its thick layer counterpart on ceramic.

Piezoresistive sensors from Kistler measure static pressures in gases and liquids. The re-sults achieved under even the most adverse conditions are precise and reproducible.

PiezoStar® – Kistler has been growing their own crystals with high sensitivity and temperature stability for about ten years

• Precision measurement of cylinder pressures with cooled PiezoStar cylin-der pressure sensor for combustion analysis, gas exchange analysis and combustion development.

• Measurement of cylinder pressures without additional modifications to the engine. Measuring spark plugs: For knock analysis and use in the vehicle. Glow plug adapters: For measure- ment in DI diesel engines. Also available as measuring glow plugs for cold start measurements.

• Pressure indication with uncooled piezoelectric PiezoStar sensors for thermodynamic analysis and engine calibration.

• Low-pressure indication in intake and exhaust manifolds with piezo-resistive pressure sensors. Cooling or switching adapters are used for exhaust measure ments. Such instrumentation is em-ployed for combustion analysis and optimization.

Sensors in Application

...Varied and Innovative in Design

The range of Kistler sensors reflects the

multifaceted nature of engine develop-

ment. Miniature piezoelectric pressure sen-

sors measure cylinder pressures extremely

precisely as a basis for thermodynamic

analysis of the combustion process. Equal-

ly unique are the piezoresistive sensors for

very accurate measurement of intake and

exhaust manifold pressures.

PiezoSmart® – the Auto-matic Sensor Identification

PiezoSmart is an active system for identify-ing individual piezoelectric and piezoresis-tive pressure and acceleration sensors. The main element of PiezoSmart is an electronic data sheet called TEDS (TEDS = Transducer Electronic Data Sheet). This contains all the essential data of an individual pressure sen-sor and can exchange these with ancillary equipment. Charge or voltage amplifiers automatically set the correct parameters by exchanging data with the TEDS of the pressure sensor.

• Correct assignment of the sensor data is always guaranteed. Your benefit: enhanced process reliability • Measurement can take place indepen- dently without any database • The modular system design allows system configurations which meet specific cus- tomer requirements

TEDS template with working time fora piezoelectric pressure sensor

Automatic recording of operating time of PiezoSmart® pressure sensors

SCP charge amplifier Type 5064B...

Database

The next generation of the SCP Charge Amplifier, Type 5064B… has the ability to determine when a cylinder pressure sensor is exposed to operating conditions. Important information such as pressure cycles and run time can be calculated and automatically saved to the TEDS chip.

When utilized in conjunction with a Piezo- Smart Sensor and the Kistler Equipment Database, this information can be used as part of a resource management program to determine calibration frequency and inventory control. Acquisition of the sensor operating time is the foundation for cost-effective operation and sets a new standard of quality assurance.
