What is Public Engagement?

The intentional and strategic deployment of intellectual human capital to work in partnership with public and private sectors to:– Enrich scholarship, research and creative

activity– Enhance curriculum, teaching and learning– Prepare educated, engaged citizens.

Engaged Department Grant

• Purpose: to advance the institutionalization of public engagement at the University of Minnesota by furthering the integration of public engagement into the programmatic features of the department.

An engaged department is one that:

• Utilizes public engagement as a strategy to achieve key academic goals for students and faculty;

• Encourages and supports high quality community-based research and engaged scholarship among faculty and/or students;

• Incorporates public engagement into academic coursework to enhance student learning and development;

• Supports collaborative research and teaching activities between members of the department and members of the community.

Goal 1

• Build up from the division level a comprehensive definition of community engagement and identify what is already happening.

Goal 2

• Examine current curriculum for opportunities to engage, and identify and create 3-5 model programs or ways to add value to existing programs through community engagement.

Successes

• The process we have developed for reviewing grant applications fosters a spirit of collaborative exploration.

• We have received new funding to continue this work– Fall Collage Concert: $3,200– Vocal Music Civic Engagement Fund: $50,000

• To date we have funded 17 proposals that total $8,250

• 7 of these grants were given to graduate students

• Through examination of exemplary models, presentations by guest speakers, and conversations with potential community partners, create opportunities for faculty, students and community partners to explore, develop, and implement public engagement initiatives.

Goal 4

• Identify, develop and maintain partnerships with community members, groups and individuals – professionals in the field, alumni, schools, community organizations, arts organization, corporations, and others interested in building engaged relationships

Goal 5

• Create and maintain SOM public engagement infrastructure, i.e., forms, assessments, invitations, web presence, communication systems, committees, etc. Suggest changes in FAR and propose faculty incentives and rewards that facilitate public engagement in the SOM
