Q. Who Cares? This month, we’ve focused on caring relationships in the

workplace — how they can be a healthy and an engaging

source of mental and emotional well-being in the place

where you spend a large quantity of you. Caring about our

co-workers creates a trusting and supportive environment

where employees can spend their time and attention caring

for our customers — which is why we are all working in the

first place! However, a caring work environment is a

necessary — but

not sufficient —

condition for

employee

engagement to

exist. Next month,

we turn our

attention to

probably the most

fundamental

workplace need of

all, Q1: knowing

what is expected

at work.

A. We do!

Quote of the week

“I truly believe that if you take care of

your employees, they will take care of

your business.”

— Richard Branson

The Postal Service is proud of its rich cultural diversity. This month we celebrate Hispanic history, heritage, culture, and recognize the important

contributions made by Hispanic-Americans to the United States.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. We would like to recognize our fearless Postal survivors. If you are a breast cancer survivor and would like to share your story, please email: [email protected]

Connected — Knowledge is the key to excellence.

Adaptable — Changes are wel-come! Keep a positive attitude. Reliable — Able to be trusted. Enjoy — Love what you do, do what you love.

Congratulations to the

2016 District Engagement

Leaders of the Year!

Districts have chosen their Engagement Leaders of the Year, a brand new award honoring managers and supervisors who are

striving to create engaging workplaces for their employees. All 67 districts were invited to choose one leader based on standard criteria, including their involvement, enthusiasm and commitment to improving their workplaces. In each district, a selection committee reviewed nominations and forwarded finalists to the district’s leaders.

All honorees will be recognized at ceremonies in their district, where they will receive a crystal award and coverage in local newsletters. “The Postal Service is proud of the district-level Engagement Leaders of the Year,” said Employee Engagement Executive Director Kelvin Williams. “These individuals are on the front lines of engagement in our organization, making positive contributions at the grassroots.”

The honorees will now enter a second round of competition in which seven area and 22 headquarters awardees will be chosen, followed by a third round of 10 finalists selected by the Executive Leadership Team at USPS headquarters.

And the winners are (drum roll please)…..

Rumor:

“I heard an employee say once that they honestly filled in their survey and told their point of view on a Postmaster they worked for at the time; then a few weeks later the Postmaster was terminated. The employee believed that they got the Postmaster fired. The employee refuses to fill out their survey now.”

What are some other rumors about the Postal Pulse? Let us fact-check them.

Email: [email protected]

The Postal Pulse survey is conducted by Gallup. No member of the USPS organization has access to information that can identify employee responses individually. Gallup adheres to strict confidentiality rules, survey responses are reported only at workgroup levels and are not broken out at the individual level. It is impossible for a manager to determine individual survey responses.

Yes, we know there are rumors floating around about this new survey. We would like to fact-check them for you!

Throwback #Postal

My grandfather, Matthew Yingling, was born March 29,1884, in Carroll County, MD. His profession was working for the Post Office Department in Washington, DC. He retired after 40 years of government service in 1953.

First Picture: Matthew Yingling standing in front of a 1931 Model A Ford U.S. Mail Truck.

Second Picture: Matthew Yingling working at the Washington, DC, Post Office. During World War II, thousands of experienced postal employees left to serve in the military. To offset the loss, the Post Office Department began a zoning address system in 124 of the largest cities in May 1943. Under this system, delivery units or zones were identified by one or two numbers between the city and state — for example, Birmingham 7, AL — so that mail could be separated by employees who did not have detailed scheme knowledge. Twenty years later, the Department implemented an even farther reaching plan, the Zoning Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code.

“I wanted to share this picture of the mail carriers from Wallace, WV, that I found in my office. I don’t know the names of the carriers in this picture and I have asked several local customers if they know any of their names, but it was taken so long ago, that no one knows who they are. It only says, “Wallace, WV mail carriers” on the back of the photo.

Our best guess is that it was taken between 1895 and 1905. What once were three rural routes by horseback is now one full-time motorized rural route. But with these country back roads, my carrier sometimes wishes he still had a horse!

Folks around here tell me that Wallace was really a bustling town in the early 1900s. There was a large oil boom here and our town was the first to have an oil well in Harrison County. Many people relocated here thanks to the oil business and the town then grew to include lots of stores and shops.

Today the Post Office is about all that is left of our little town. The people who live here now have to commute 20 miles to go to town, as there are so few businesses remaining in Wallace.”

Daniel Clutter, sales associate, Wallace, WV

Engaging Together Engagement can take on many forms, caring for families or showing home team spirit!

On Sept. 18, the Clintonville Post Offices both held their first annual family picnic for all employees and family members. There are a total of 30 employees from six of the Clintonville offices with all but five employees unable to attend. Almost 70 people showed up including family members. After a quick introduction of everyone, the employees competed in a teambuilding exercise/race that required teams of three people to work together to balance a ball on a triangular stick, carry it across the field and place it into a bucket without touching the ball. It was quite the show and the family members had fun watching the employees struggle and race to win!

Everyone brought a dish to share, and nobody went home hungry! It was great to see everyone be able to socialize and meet each other’s families outside of the work environment.

I plan to make this a yearly event.

50 years, Now that’s Postal Proud “We held a ceremony to celebrate Lenny

Wilson marking his 50 years of service. We

had a cake and some cookies. Springfield

NDC manager, Duane Lariviere, presented

Lenny with a Service Award from PMG

Megan Brennan (which Lenny is holding in

the photo) and his 50-year pin. Lenny was

also presented with a Spot Award, a postal

hat (which Lenny is wearing in the photo)

and a key chain.

Lenny’s MDO, Al Cardaropoli, spoke about

his accomplishments during his 50 years of

service. Lenny spoke and said he was

thankful for all his co-workers and that is

what keeps him coming to work every

day. Lenny is a mailhandler equipment

operator on Tour 1. He has no intentions of

retiring yet.

Lenny began his career in 1966, back when

First-Class postage was 5 cents. His fondest

memory is when he was on Jon Steele’s Equal Employee Opportunity Committee where he used to

organize EEO seminars. Because of his Equal Employment Opportunity seminars, tax night

activities, and food drives, he made many friends from all over Western Massachusetts. It is the

many friends that make him happiest and proud to be a postal employee.

50 years, Now that’s Postal Proud

Group photo of Jerry holding framed art piece with management and co-workers.

Letter carrier Lawrence (Jerry) Urban shakes hands with District Manager John DiPeri.

Lawrence (Jerry) Urban just celebrated 50 years of federal service. He is a letter carrier at the Uptown Station in Albuquerque, NM. Jerry served eight years in the Air Force. He started his Postal career at the Eldorado Station now known as the Steve Schiff Station. Management personnel held a special celebration in Jerry’s honor on Aug. 18. District Manager John DiPeri attended the celebration and spoke about Jerry’s Postal career. He thanked him for his service and unrelenting dedication. DiPeri presented Jerry with a framed art piece including the New Mexico Statehood stamp and the U.S. Department of Air Force stamp. DiPeri said, “Jerry is not only working as a

letter carrier after 50 years of Federal Service he is on the overtime desired list. That’s impressive.”

Jerry’s co-worker, Vince Martinez, said, “Jerry is one of the hardest working carriers at the unit. He is willing to carry overtime on any route. He is an employee the newly hired carriers should use as their role model.”

Jerry was asked, “What is your fondest memory of the Postal Service?” He said, “I believe today is.” Jerry has been married for 33 years and has six children. I guess that explains why he is on the overtime list. “The Postal Service has been good to me. There are a lot of good people here,” he said. When asked what his plans for the future entail, Jerry stated, “I may consider retiring in the next couple of years.”

Congratulations, Mr. Urban, the Postal Service is fortunate to have you as an employee.
