July 18, 2013 (Washington, D.C.) – The sixth annual National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) was held on June 8, 2013, unifying hundreds of local, state and federal agencies, diverse nonprofit organizations in the health and youth-services fields, and the recreation community in their support for fun outdoors. The U.S. Forest Service (FS) and the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) coordinated the event nationally. The mission for the diverse and growing partnership behind GO Day is to: Engage Americans, especially youth, in fun recreation opportunities readily available in the Great Outdoors; and educate them on the physical, mental and other benefits of an active outdoor lifestyle. GO Day Achievements GO Day 2013 was incredibly successful. Here are a few numbers which show the reach and impact of this year’s event, as well as the growth from last year. There were 148 official GO Day events, 10 more than a year ago. Despite rainy conditions in the East, over 63,000 people participated in GO Day 2013. Although this total was somewhat higher in 2012, participation has jumped by almost 60% in two years. Approximately 900 organizations supported local GO Day events, compared to 700 organizations in 2012. The National Get Outdoors Day Facebook page has over 4,500 Fans and a network of two million people (up from 2,800 Fans and a network of one million people in 2012). In addition, the number of people who interacted with the Facebook page for the week of GO Day was a record 144,617 unique users. GO Day was specifically mentioned in 15 gubernatorial proclamations declaring June as Great Outdoors Month. These states were Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wyoming. You can view these and other Great Outdoors Month proclamations here. A major cause of this exciting growth was numerous social media campaigns, news releases, radio and TV ads, flyers distributed to school and youth programs, community bulletin boards, and other means of informing people of GO Day events. Additionally, many event sponsors and partners used their own email distribution lists and news releases to reach potential event attendees. Fisherman of all ages gear up at the Caesar Creek Lake in Waynesville, Ohio Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl help during a presentation in Dearborn, Michigan.

GO Day Achievements GO Day 2013 was incredibly successful. Here are a few numbers which show the reach and impact of this year’s event, as well as the growth from last year.

• There were 148 official GO Day events, 10 more than a year ago.

• Despite rainy conditions in the East, over 63,000 people participated in GO Day 2013. Although this total was somewhat higher in 2012, participation has jumped by almost 60% in two years.

• Approximately 900 organizations supported local GO Day events, compared to 700 organizations in 2012.

• The National Get Outdoors Day Facebook page has over 4,500 Fans and a network of two million people (up from 2,800 Fans and a network of one million people in 2012). In addition, the number of people who interacted with the Facebook page for the week of GO Day was a record 144,617 unique users.

• GO Day was specifically mentioned in 15 gubernatorial proclamations declaring June as Great Outdoors Month.

Signature Sites and National Sponsors This year GO Day featured 11 Signature Sites, a designation given to sites which have a proven ability to effectively introduce lots of people to the great outdoors through a wide variety of activities. Each of these events is made possible through partnerships with dozens of organizations.

The 2013 Signature GO Day Sites were located in: Brevard, North Carolina; Dearborn, Michigan; Denver, Colorado; Fremont, California; Huron, South Dakota; Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; Mesa, Arizona; Milford, Delaware; Minneapolis, Minnesota; St. Louis, Missouri; and Vancouver, Washington. These events were very successful, introducing over 37,000 people to the outdoors by working with approximately 260 organizations to run engaging youth and family-oriented events.

Another record set in 2013 was the number of National Sponsors supporting GO Day. This year eight organizations supported GO Day events across the country, compared to four last year. The generosity of these donations cannot be overstated, and everyone involved in the planning of GO Day – and of course the tens of thousands of GO Day participants – is extremely appreciative of this support. Signature Sites received generous support from The Coleman Company and The Sportsman’s Guide. Both companies donated tents, camping chairs and stoves, sleeping bags, and other camping necessities. Many of these items were given away through raffles; to enter event attendees had to visit booths and exhibits or successfully demonstrate how to assemble an environmentally friendly campsite. In addition to donations from The Coleman Company and The Sportsman’s Guide, GO Day events were supported by several new national partners. The authors of The Kids’ Outdoor Adventure Book, Destination Nature, raised money through a razoo.com campaign to support their donation of books. GO Day sites were encouraged to work with their local sponsors to contribute money for additional books specifically for their event. Collectively, 150 books were distributed to kids at events across the country. The book details “448 great things to do in nature before you grow up.” Activities include catching a frog, making a snow angel, and building a birdfeeder. Green Mountain Digital, developers of the popular Audubon Guides apps, partnered with GO Day in conjunction with the development of their new Yonder App. The app allows users to search for specific outdoor activities near them, read and write reviews, and share their adventures with friends through text, photos, and short videos. GO Day sites were listed as featured events in the app, giving them great publicity in the emerging digital community. Organizations that ran GO Day events will continue to be listed on the app based on the recreation opportunities they offer.

In addition, both Coach-Net and Coca-Cola made cash donations to GO Day. Support was also provided by the National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Pennsylvania Recreation Vehicle and Camping Association. GO Day Events GO Day 2013 offered opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional outdoor fun, regardless of past experience, skills, or ownership of equipment. GO Day events focused on reaching Americans and youth who rarely visit public lands and waters. Events across the country also supported the First Lady's Let's Move Outside initiative, which seeks to eliminate childhood obesity within one generation by promoting healthy outdoor activity.

Overall, GO Day events provided attendees an introduction to outdoor education and local recreation opportunities. Activities ranged from rock climbing, dog training, and fishing to recycling education and water safety. Several sites used the occasion to open new trails and remove invasive flora from parks, while others featured live bands, cook-offs, outdoor photography clinics, and the launch of a new bus route to connect urban centers to a nearby state park. Youth participated in canoeing,

nature walks, geocaching, high rope adventures, mountain biking, and checked out environmental/conservation education stations and camping demonstrations. Children also created crafts from natural materials, assembled “wish trees,” participated in fishing competitions and in wildlife education featuring live animals. Numerous events also offered ranger-led hikes and walks through natural and historic sites. Many events also gave away special items like GO Day themed reflective zipper pulls, whistle/compass/flash lights, temporary tattoos, and much more. Numerous special appearances were made by Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl, Signal the Frog, Seymour the Antelope, Bobber the Water Safety Dog, and many other mascots. Several professional athletes also participated in GO Day activities. The celebrities taught kids about environmental stewardship and personal safety in the great outdoors through fun games and engaging presentations. The song “Let’s Go Outside” by the official GO Day Troubadour, Joe Reilly, was played at many sites across the country. GO Day was particularly special for youth who accomplished an outdoor first. Many young participants will remember GO Day 2013 as the day they caught their first fish, built their first campfire, or rode a two-wheel bike for the first time. Facilitating experiences like these help GO Day events forge a strong bond between young adventurers and the Great Outdoors.

About GO Day National Get Outdoors Day was launched on June 14, 2008, in response to a growing number of disturbing reports about today’s

youth and the relationship between their health and daily activities. Today’s American youth average 7.5 hours per day in front of a screen and are six times more likely to play a computer game than to ride a bike. Kids report that outdoor adventure is fun – but that outdoor activities are invisible, lost in a clutter of mass media ads and technology, and overshadowed by malls offering food, friends, and “perfect” weather. The U.S. Forest Service and ARC agreed to lead an inclusive, nationwide effort focusing on a single day when people would be inspired and motivated to get outdoors. Americans are leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles, leading to an obesity epidemic and adding billions of dollars in healthcare costs for preventable, lifestyle-related diseases. Organizations involved in GO Day are particularly concerned about the rise in obesity among youth, who for the first time in history have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. These organizations believe an active outdoor lifestyle can prevent weight-related diseases and that the appeal of the Great Outdoors can surpass that of shopping malls and video games. The visibility of GO Day has only continued to increase as excitement about the event builds across the nation. Dramatic increases in partner organizations, media coverage, and participation demonstrate the growing enthusiasm and support for the event dedicated to getting people engaged in healthy, outdoor activities. Plans for GO Day 2014 are already underway across the nation. If you would like to host a GO Day event or sponsor GO Day nationally in 2014, please contact Tom Georgevits at the American Recreation Coalition at [email protected] or 202-682-9530. For more information on GO Day, please visit: www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported GO Day 2013. We hope to see you again for the seventh annual GO Day on June 14, 2014.
