-a reading style that requires you to look for general ideas

Skimming is useful when you just want to get the main ideas of a text or an overall impression of it without having to read intensively.

Tips on skimming:

1. Go over the material quickly.

2. Look for key words and sentences, including headings and titles that may imply main ideas of the text you are reading. This will also help you determine the nature of the material you are reading.

3. In reading comprehension, it will help if you read the questions first before skimming through the text. In that way, you minimize the time you allot for the reading of the material.

Activity:Get a copy of any broadsheet and go to the opinion page. Choose an article and skim it for two minutes. Then on a sheet of paper, write a 50-word summary of what the article is all about.
