Question 1
What is RESEARCH?
Question 2
When do you do a RESEARCH?
Question 3
What is the significance of RESEARCH in
Civil Engineering?
Introduction
The progress and development of mankind has always been the product of man’s innumerable research outputs.
Man’s curiosity about himself and his environment enables him to think, invent, search and arrive at adequate answers to his problems and to satisfy his needs.
In his desire to arrive at these answers satisfactorily, he develops various instruments and techniques. And the best tool to help him is RESEARCH.

Nature of Research
Basic Applied
Seeks to contribute to knowledge through the
development of a theory or concept
Seeks to provide solutions to problems through the
development and evaluation of processes, policies and other activities that require specific
course of action (Edralin, 2000)
Definitions of Research
Sevilla (1990: 1)
“research means searching a theory, testing a theory or solving a problem.”
Definitions of Research
Kerlinger (in Sevilla, 1990: 1)
“research as a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of
hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among natural phenomena.”
Definitions of Research

“Research is an organized and systematic way of finding answers to questions.”
Definitions of Research
Sarno (2012)
“Research is done through careful, systematic, and patient study or investigation in some field of knowledge which is undertaken to discover
or unearth or establish facts or principles.”

Importance of Research
Fonollera (1993: 1)
“(a) Research is a journey towards the search for infinite knowledge both in modern and
social sciences which are always unfinished processes.”

RESEARCH
Kinds of Research
PURE OR BASIC
RESEARCH
It aims to discover the basic truths or principles. This is intended to add to the body of scientific knowledge.
Basic research is driven by a scientist’s curiosity or interest in a scientific question.
There is no obvious commercial value to the discoveries that result from basic research. (http://www.lbl.gov)
Kinds of ResearchThis is the application of
scientific knowledge to the solution of a problem.
There is a development of a new device or system or method in order to solve the problem.
Medical research is a good example. (http://www.lbl.gov)
APPLIED RESEARCH
Kinds of ResearchDecision-oriented research where it
involves the application of the steps of scientific method in response to an immediate need for improvement of the existing practices.
Purpose is to develop new approaches to solve questions or problems.
