Cardinals Claim Share of GLIAC North Championship on Late TD by Janis

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team won a thrilling 55-52 shotout with rival Grand Valley State University this afternoon (Nov. 10) in front of a packed Wickes Stadium on Senior Day. The win helped the Cardinals claim a share of the GLIAC North Championship for the second consecutive year.

The early tension between the two rival schools was broken on the second play of the contest when Tim Hogue (Inkster, Mich.) broke free on an 87-yard scamper to the GVSU 1-yard line. Hogue finished the afternoon with 15 carries for 175 yards on the ground. Senior Ronnie Lark (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic HS) struck paydirt on the next play as the Cardinals took the early 7-0 edge.

On Grand Valley's ensuing possession, Grant Caserta (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa HS) jumped the GVSU route and took the interception down the GVSU 15-yard line. The SVSU offense called upon Meijer "Player of the Game" Jeff Janis (Tawas City, Mich. / Tawas Area HS) on the next play with a reverse to the right side and into the endzone as SVSU went up 14-0. Janis would finish the game with ten receptions, 165 yards receiving and three total touchdowns.

After another Laker turnover, this time by Jon Bryant (Detroit, Mich. / Oak Park HS), Cardinal quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South HS) connected with Hogue on a 54-yard pass, which he took all the way for the score as SVSU went up 21-0 midway through the first quarter. Jennings would end the afternoon completing 26-of-37 passes for 360 yards and three touchdown through the air. He would also add a TD reception and run later in the game.

The Cardinals carried the momentum into the second quarter as Jennings hooked up with Janis on a 41-yard touchdown catch and run as he broke several tackles as he crossed the pylon to put SVSU up 28-0.

Grand Valley put points on the board for the first time with nine minutes to go in the half to cut the SVSU lead to 28-7.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, the Cardinals went to their bag of tricks as senior running back Ronnie Lark threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Jon Jennings. The touchdown pass from Lark put SVSU ahead 35-7 on Senior Day.

The Lakers would open the scoring in the second half with a 42-yard touchdown to Charles Johnson. Sophomore Scott Stanford (Novi, Mich.) and the Cardinals would respond with a 22-yard field goal to make the score 38-14.

Stanford would add his second field goal of the afternoon, this time from 35-yards out after GVSU used a big kickoff return to setup a 2-yard touchdown.

Jennings would power his way into the endzone on a four-yard run behind the Saginaw Valley offensive line to extend the Cardinal lead to 48-29 after GVSU added another touchdown in the third quarter.

The Lakers would then go on to score on three straight possessions to take the 52-48 lead over the Cardinals with 6:07 left in the game.

With just over a minute remaining in the game, Saginaw Valley reclaimed possession of the ball at their own five-yard line. Jennings and the Cardinal offense would go to work from there, completing a 16-yard pass to Hogue and a 37-yard strike to Mark Thrash (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming Park HS) down the SVSU sideline. He would hit Thrash again on the drive for a first down on fourth and ten. Thrash ended the evening with 10 receptions for 92 yards.

The Cardinals would find themselves first and ten from the Grand Valley 32 yard line with just nine seconds left on the scoreboard. With the game on the line, Jennings drifted slightly to his left and threw a perfect pass to Janis in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown. Janis out leaped two Laker defenders and came down with the game-winning touchdown for Saginaw Valley.

The win for the Cardinals was their first over Grand Valley since the 2004 season.

Leading the way for the Cardinals on defense was Brian Johnson (Muskegon, Mich. / Catholic Central HS) who finished with 11 tackles while DeAngelo Parris (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle HS) and Caserta both chipped in with seven tackles on the afternoon.

The Cardinals have likely played their last game of the season unless they are selected for play in the Division II Football Championships. Caserta and Cecich Named Academic All-District

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University graduate student Grant Caserta (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) and senior Zach Cecich (Crown Point, Ind.) were named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today (Nov. 8).

Caserta and Cecich were selected through voting conducted by CoSIDA members in their district. Saginaw Valley's district includes colleges and universities in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, have attained sophomore academic and athletic standing, be a varsity starter or key reserve and be nominated by the sports information director. Both Caserta and Cecich advance to the Capital One Academic All-America national ballot where first- and second-team honorees will be decided later this month. Caserta graduated from the College of Business in four years in May 2012 with a degree in General Business and earned a cumulative GPA of 3.81. He is currently enrolled in the graduate studies program. Caserta has started all eleven games this year at linebacker for the Cardinals. He has helped Saginaw Valley hold opponents to 23.0 points per game and accumulated a team-high 102 tackles this season. Cecich owns a 3.96 GPA as a Business Management major in the College of Business and will graduate this December after four and a half years. He was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV Second Team in 2010. Arguably one of the best

all-around athletes on the SVSU team, Cecich has started all 11 games this season, including two starts at left tackle. He has caught nine passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Academic All-District ® teams for Division II include the student-athletes that are divided into four geographic districts across the United States based on NCAA Super Regions. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. Janis Named One of 24 Candidates for 2012 Harlon Hill

FLORENCE, Ala. - Saginaw Valley State University standout wide receiver Jeff Janis (Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area HS) was named one of 24 candidates for the the 2012 Harlon Hill Trophy today (Nov. 9) as announced by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee. Janis, a junior wide receiver has had a record breaking season for the Cardinals this year. To date his 96 receptions rank third in DII, while his 1470 yards are top in the Nation. He has also caught 15 touchdown pass this season and has been named the GLIAC Offensive "Player of the Week" three times this season. Janis registered a GLIAC and SVSU record 300 yards receiving against Lake Erie in week 4, he also broke the GLIAC and SVSU mark for receptions with an 18 catch effort against Michigan Tech in week 9. In that same contest he eclipsed the single season SVSU marks for receptions and yards in a season. He currently sits just nine catches short of breaking the single season GLIAC mark of 89 receptions. A total of 24 candidates are in the running for the 2012 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year.

The list of candidates was announced Friday morning by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee.

The list includes six players from each of the four Division II Super Regions.

Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 168 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions. The 24 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on November 17.

The winner of the 2012 award, which is presented by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee, will be announced at the 27th annual Harlon Hill Trophy Presentation Banquet on Friday, December 14 at the Florence Conference Center at 6:30 p.m. This year's Hill Trophy Banquet will also include the 14th induction into the Division II Football Hall of Fame.

The NCAA Division II Championship Game is scheduled for December 15 at Florence's Braly Municipal Stadium at noon.

The Hill Trophy is sponsored by the City of Florence, Ala., Florence-Lauderdale Tourism, Opti-Net, the Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa and Herff Jones.

Candidates were initially nominated by the sports information directors at their respective schools and those nominations were then reviewed by the Hill Regional Advisory Committees, which trimmed the list of candidates. The group of 24 candidates includes nine quarterbacks, eight running backs, five receivers, a linebacker and a defensive lineman. There are 14 seniors, nine juniors and one sophomore.

Among the players vying for the 2012 award from the Super Regional 1 are senior wide receiver Tyron Laughinghouse of St. Augustine's University (N.C.), senior quarterback Kevin Morton of Kutztown University (Pa.), junior running back Franklyn Quiteh of Bloomsburg University (Pa.), senior quarterback Kameron Smith of Winston-Salem State University (N.C.), senior running back Harvie Tuck of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and junior quarterback Zach Zulli of Shippensburg University (Pa.).

Candidates from Super Regional 2 are senior wide receiver Chris Bowden of Wingate University (N.C.), junior wide receiver Gerald Ford of Valdosta State University (Ga.), senior linebacker Corey Jones of Lane College (Tenn.), senior quarterback David Thomas of Miles College (Ala.), senior defensive end Ridge Wilson of the University of West Alabama and senior tailback Derrick Washington of Tuskegee (Ala.).

Super Regional 3 is represented by junior wide receiver John Brown of Pittsburg State University (Kan.), senior quarterback Tyler Eckenrode of Emporia State

University (Kan.), senior running back Michael Hill of Missouri Western State University, junior quarterback Phillip Klaphake of St. Cloud State University (Minn.), sophomore quarterback Kevin Rodgers of Henderson State University (Ark.) and senior running back Rayon Simmons of Winona State University (Minn.).

Selected from Super Regional 4 are junior running back Kay Fiecher of the University of India- napolis (Ind.), senior running back Joe Glendening of Hillsdale College (Mich.), senior quarterback Taylor Housewright of Ashland University (Ohio), junior running back Keidrick Jackson of Midwestern State University (Texas), junior wide receiver Jeff Janis of Saginaw Valley State University (Mich.) and junior quarterback Dustin Vaughn of West Texas A&M University.

Only two of this year's candidates - Morton and Glendening - were also candidates a year ago.

Additional Harlon Hill Notes North Dakota State quarterback Jeff Bentrim won the initial Hill Trophy in 1986, followed by three- time winner - Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) running back Johnny Bailey - in 1987, 1988 and 1989.

Another North Dakota State quarterback, Chris Simdorn, claimed the 1990 award, followed by Pittsburg State receiver Ronnie West in 1991, Pittsburg State running back Ronald Moore in 1992, New Haven running back Roger Graham in 1993, Valdosta State quarterback Chris Hatcher in 1994.

North Alabama linebacker Ronald McKinnon became the first and so far only defensive player to win the award in 1995, followed by Truman State running back Jarrett Anderson in 1996, Bloomsburg University running back Irvin Sigler in 1997, Emporia State running back Brian Shay in 1998 and Northern Colorado quarterback Corte McGuffey in 1999.

The award had its second two-time winner when Valdosta State quarterback Dusty Bonner claimed the Hill Trophy in 2000 and 2001.

Grand Valley State quarterback Curt Anes won the Hill Trophy in 2002, followed by North Alabama quarterback Will Hall in 2003, Colorado School of Mines quarterback Chad Friehauf in 2004 and East Stroudsburg's Jimmy Terwilliger in 2005. Four straight Hill Trophies were won by running backs, beginning with Chadron State's Danny Woodhead in 2006 and 2007. Abilene Christian's Bernard Scott won in 2008, followed by Wayne State (Mich.) running back Joique Bell in 2009.
