We’ve faced a lot of choices this year: electoral choice in our general election; Labour supporters have chosen a new leader; and voters in Scotland have Holyrood elections next May. But elections are much more than a cross in a box. They lead - in turn - to policy, infrastructure and investment choices for governments, investment funds and international partners.
So, I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s Energy UK Annual Conference and our sessions focusing on how these choices effect the energy industry and its customers.
I am particularly grateful to Lord Bourne and Barry Gardiner MP for giving up their time to set out their parties’ individual visions for energy.
I would like to thank both our members and our challengers for taking part in today’s panel debates discussing the choices the country faces delivering continued energy security. We will look at the evolution of the generation mix and the technological challenges facing the industry as it works towards sustained environmental improvement.
And we will consider the extent to which policy – and its reversals - effects how attractive major energy projects are to investors.
Welcome
Lawrence SladeCEO, Energy UK
Energy UK Annual Conference 2015 2
But, for many people, energy is simply a customer-facing business so I am delighted we will hear from both the Ombudsman and the Regulator.
Lastly, I am very grateful to the choices our sponsors – PwC, CGI and Pöyry- have made supporting our conference today.
So, all that remains is to thank you for choosing to be here today. I hope you find the day interesting and enjoyable.

By Steve Jennings, PwC’s UK Power and Utilities Leader
This year’s Energy UK Conference is focused on Energy Choices. At PwC, we are witnessing a transformational shift in the energy industry. Our latest annual Global Power & Utilities Survey highlighted the significant disruption facing the industry across all regions. In the UK, we are seeing major change in energy retail markets, a move to decentralised energy and benign wholesale markets – all against a backdrop of the need for significant capital investment to address security of supply concerns and to address our carbon reduction commitments.
With significant change, comes choices! The challenge for many companies in the sector will be to make timely moves to gain the most of the current market opportunities (of ‘old’ energy systems) whilst at the same time transitioning to new business models. Investors will need to make difficult decisions to decide on the optimal strategy.
In this context, we have developed a framework to help decision making - Total Impact Measurement and Management (TIMM). The framework gives businesses the ability to compare strategies and business choices taking into account the economic impact as well as the impact from a society and environmental perspective. Our conference presentation will explain its use (including an interactive practical application) and a case study from the utilities industry.
3 Energy UK Annual Conference 2015
PwC foreword
At the Energy UK Conference in 2013, we presented our views on the potential disruption to energy retail markets - At the crossroads: The future of the UK energy retail market. The pace of change has happened faster than many predicted, accelerated by the advent of new entrants, consumer choices and the advent of digital technologies.
In preparation for this conference, we have updated our research and sought to predict the capabilities of the winners of the future. In our latest publication – Energy 2020: Who will be the winners? – we discuss likely new business models and the key capabilities which energy retailers will need to master to be successful in this changing market place.

11 Energy UK Annual Conference 2015
The UK energy industry attracts and retains - the length and breadth of the country - highly skilled staff. This is because the sector offers challenging, demanding and, above all, interesting and rewarding careers.
Many of tomorrow’s industry leaders can lack a cohort of close colleagues who are of their age and level of experience. To address this, Energy UK set up the Young Energy Professionals (YEP) Forum. The Forum provides the next generation of energy professionals with a place to network, share experiences and learn from industry experts.
Over the last year membership has grown rapidly. It now has over 600 members. And June saw the inaugural YEP Awards ceremony, recognising success and leadership across the varied disciplines which make up the industry. Over 170 energy professionals packed Vinopolis at London Bridge to celebrate the achievements of our five award winners and hear from our guest speaker, Tom Greatrex.
We have also taken the Forum on the road with events in Glasgow, Birmingham as well as London. And we have organised exciting site visits. The first was to EDF Energy’s Dungeness B nuclear power station where guests toured the plant and were given an introduction to nuclear power and safety. Our second saw a group of YEPs visit British Gas’ training academy in Leicester where they learned about some of the green technologies being developed that will make our homes, schools and buildings more energy efficient.
Next year we will build on our programme which allowed young professionals to discuss topical issues – the CMA, security of supply, the policy impact on bills and the role of technological innovation in solving the energy trilemma – with world experts.
So, sign up and plug into Britain’s brightest energy group.

The Energy UK events programme is always expanding to provide value to our members and a forum for engagement with energy stakeholders, from policy-makers to suppliers and investors. From major set-piece events such as today’s Annual Conference, our Annual Lunch and our Parliamentary Reception to more intimate and focused events on policy issues and operational management, the various events throughout the year provide opportunities to engage across the sector and with external organisations.
We already have a date for next year’s Annual Conference so join us at 1 Wimpole Street on 26 October 2016 for another day of high-level speakers, thought-provoking panel discussions and networking opportunities.
Our conference activity goes beyond our industry-wide event however as we move up to Leeds on 5 November for our second annual Health and Safety Conference. Following last year’s success, we are moving out of London to the electricity generation hub of West Yorkshire, with some of the UK’s major plant on the doorstep. The conference will be hearing from leading practitioners from the industry and its suppliers as well as trade unions and the HSE.
Still to come this year we have two Breakfast Briefings on the digitalisation of energy utilities and the future of electricity interconnection. This is part of our regular series of events which welcome 30 – 40 industry delegates to discuss topical issues with an expert panel. Previous sessions have ranged from the operational aspects of implementing REMIT to the Contract for Difference regime and the energy politics of the 2015 General Election. This exciting programme continues throughout the year – for more details email [email protected].
Rounding the year off, our Annual Industry Lunch takes place on 9 December at The Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane. This industry mainstay rounds off a busy year for the Energy UK events programme which is already looking to 2016 with our Parliamentary Reception in the first half of the year.

Thanks to our sponsors
Energy UK Annual Conference 2015 18
Energy UK would like to thank the sponsors of today’s Annual Conference. We are delighted to be supported this year by PwC, CGI and Pöyry and we remain grateful for their continued support of both the industry and this event. The Energy UK Annual conference is the high point in the annual energy calendar. It brings together leading industry figures with key policy makers, energy commentators and senior colleagues drawn from the diverse Energy UK family. The conference provides a platform to debate the key issues facing both the industry and all its many related partner industries. This is one of the reasons Energy UK puts such store by the participation of its supporters. Our sponsors are uniquely placed to help the industry view the wider landscape – today’s sponsors help bring together many of the various policy, political, economic and social strands which underpin the current energy debate. Our sponsors bring their own particular brand of expertise to any project. They are each singular and specialised providing invaluable tailored insight and critical thought leadership. Energy UK has benefitted - and will continue to benefit - from their different skills and expertise. We welcome PwC, CGI and Pöyry here today and thank them again for their involvement in the Energy UK Annual Conference. We hope you have an opportunity to talk to them during the day.
