Forest Energy (Wood fuel) in North Karelia/ Joensuu

The potentiality of forest energy in North Karelia has been calculated to be 1-1,3 TWh

The fuel procurement and transport operations of Joensuu power plant employ about100 people in total and the annual value of fuel procurement exceeds EUR 15 million

Joensuu power plant wood fuel was used approximately 350 000 m3 (650 GWh) at Joensuu power plant(by-products and forest converted chips of forest industry included)

Peat

Peat is a result from decompose of mire plants (0,2-1 mm/a)

The peatlands of Finland reserved for peat production will last more than 200 years if the

output of peat remains on current level

The fluidised-bed boiler reduces the emissions of peat combustion and diversifies the fuel range

Disadvantages e.g. fly ash emissions, odors and some amount of ash to landfill site

The share of peat of total energy consumption has been approximately 7 % during last years.Less than1 % of finnish peatlands are in production use.

Biogas utilisation at Joensuu power plant

One ton of waste generates 5 - 10 m3 ( 25 - 50 kW) of biogas

2 m3 biogas equals aprx. 1 litre of oil

55 % of methane and 45 % carbon dioxide

The plant consumes aprx. 8 GWh of biogas annually.

This amount is sufficient for heating 400 - 500 detached houses

Customers receive heat through the hot water that circulates in the district heating network. The temperature of the district heating water varies according to the weather between 65 ... 115 ºC. The temperature of the return water varies between 25 ... 50 ºC The heat exchangers located in the building´s heat distribution room transfer heat from the circulating district heating water into the building´s heating system.In the buildings, the heat is used for warming, tap water and ventilation. During the summer, heat is only needed for warm tap water.

The number of district heated buildings exceeds 1 million in Finland and in these buildings lives about 2,5 million people.In the town of Joensuu district heating covers 18,500 flats. 76 % of inhabitants (39,500) live in the area of district heating network

District heating covers almost a half of Finland's housing stock.District heating network in Helsinki is 1152 km and in Joensuu 200 km at the moment

District heating covers about 90 % of the demand in bigger cities

District heating covers the great majority of community buildings in our country

Joensuu district heating network

District heating network in Joensuu is 200 km at the moment. The power plant covers 90 % of the demand. District heat is also produced in the heat plants which are situated in different parts of the network in Joensuu.

Total heat sales 580 GWh.

District heating is an environmentally-friendly and effective form of heating and provides savings in terms of environment and energy alike. Thanks to the effectiveness of the co-generation, environmental emissions remain 30 % lower than in the case where electricity and heat are generated separately.

Pyrolyysiöljy - kestävä vaihtoehto fossiiliselle öljylle

• Bioöljyn raaka-aineena käytetään paikallista • puuperäistä biomassaa:

– hakkuutähteitä – ensiharvennuspuuta– metsäteollisuuden sivutuotteita

• Korvaamalla bioöljyllä fossiilisia polttoaineita voidaanvähentää lämmöntuotannon hiilidioksidipäästöjä yli 70 %

• Koska bioöljy on puuperäisenä käytännössä rikitöntä, sillä on myös positiivinen vaikutus paikalliseen ilmanlaatuun

• Suunniteltu bioöljyn tuotantomäärä on noin 50 000 tonnia vuodessa:

– Kaukolämpöä 10 000 pientalolle tai 24 000 keskikokoiselle asunnolle

– Noin 60 000 tonnin CO2-vähennys– Noin 320 tonnia vähemmän rikkipäästöjä

Vermosta espoolaisille kaukolämpöä bioöljyllä

• Vermon lämpökeskusta uudistetaan niin, että siinä on mahdollista polttaa Joensuussa tuotettua Fortum Otso® -bioöljyä

• Bioöljy valmistetaan Joensuussa sähkön ja lämmön yhteistuotantolaitokseen integroidussa bioöljylaitoksessa

• Raaka-aineena käytetään metsähaketta sekä muuta puubiomassaa

• Energiaan käytetty raha pysyy kotimaassa

• Käytöllä merkittäviä positiivisia ympäristövaikutuksia:

– Korvaa fossiilisen polttoaineen käytön

Pohjois-Karjalan Keskussairaalan hukkalämmön hyötykäyttö

• Fortum ostaa jatkossa Pohjois-Karjalan keskussairaalassa syntyvää hukkalämpöä ja hyödyntää sen Joensuun kaukolämmityksessä. Hukkalämpöä päästään hyödyntämään keskussairaalan laajennusosan M valmistuttua.

• Sairaala tarvitsee jäähdytystä ja perinteisesti rakennusta viilennettäessä ylimääräinen lämpö poistetaan ilman hyötykäyttöä. Avoimen kaukolämpöverkon ansiosta hukkalämmöllä lämmitetään muita joensuulaisia kaukolämmön asiakkaita. Keskussairaala on ensimmäinen, joka liittyy kaukolämpöverkkoon tuottajaksi Joensuussa. Sairaalan ylijäämälämmöllä lämpiää tulevaisuudessa vuosittain noin 300 omakotitaloa.
