Wilbur Olin Atwater (born 1844) – a chemist and physiologist who had major contributions to the field of health science through his discoveries of the nutritive values of various foods and also for his collaborative work with Benedict on exercise physiology.

Francis Gano Benedict (born in 1870) – a chemist who made major contributions to the fields of nutrition and exercise science. His most famous work examined the effects of exercise on metabolism. In this work he collaborated with Atwater.

Dr. Leland Clark of Cincinnati invented a blood substitute allowing this living mouse to breathe in the liquid, while goldfish inhabit the water floating on top. After the mouse was removed from the fluid 11/2 hours later, he went happily on his way.
