Offsetting your GHG impact
![Page 56: Energy Assessments 101](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020921/5681606e550346895dcf94b3/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
What is an offset?
A greenhouse gas (GHG) offset is generated by the reduction, avoidance, or sequestration of GHG emissions from a specific project.
Offsets are so named because they counteract or offset greenhouse gases that would have been emitted into the atmosphere; they are a compensating equivalent for reductions made at a specific source of emissions.
![Page 57: Energy Assessments 101](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020921/5681606e550346895dcf94b3/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Example Offset Projects
• Increasing energy efficiency in buildings, factories, or transportation
• Generating electricity from renewables such as wind or solar
• Modifying a power plant or factory to use fuels that produce less GHG
• Putting wasted energy to work via cogeneration
• Capturing carbon dioxide in forests and agricultural soils
• Carbon Trading
![Page 58: Energy Assessments 101](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020921/5681606e550346895dcf94b3/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
Importance of offsets
• implemented quickly• relatively low cost
![Page 59: Energy Assessments 101](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020921/5681606e550346895dcf94b3/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
The challenge of using offsets
• Offsets are unregulated• Verification of additionally• Permanence• Which projects are better
i.e. trees vs. renewables• Project location• Are the projects targeting the right
gas
![Page 60: Energy Assessments 101](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020921/5681606e550346895dcf94b3/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
