Energy

Energyis not mattter.

hasn’t got volume and mass.

butAll living things Non-living things&

need energy

All living things need energy

To moveTo run

To growTo play

To work…

Non-living things need energy

To workTo function

There are 6 types of energy:

Moving things have kinetic energy.

Electricity is electrical energy.

Our body has chemical energy when we digest food.

The sun has light energy.

Anything that makes sound has sound energy.

Anything that is hot has thermal energy.

Energy comes from different

sources.

Non-renewable sources

• Are limited. They will run out in the future.

• Are burnt and pollute air and water.

Coal is a non-renewable source of energy.

It’s extracted through mines.

We burn coal to get energy.

It’s a black solid.

Petroleum is a non-renewable source of energy.

It’s a black liquid.

It’s extracted through wells.

Cars, buses and heaters burn petroleum to work

Natural gas is a non-renewable source of energy.

It’s a mixture of gases.

It’s extracted through wells.

At home we burn natural gas to cook and heat water.

Renewable sources

• Are unlimited. They will never run out in the future.

• They don’t pollute.

The sun is a renewable source of energy.

Solar panels change solar energy into electricity and heat.

Wind is a renewable source of energy.

Wind turbines change energy from moving air into electricity.

Water is a renewable source of energy.

Dams change the energy of moving water (hydroelectrical energy) into electricity.

Organic matter is a renewable source of energy.

Bioenergy comes from burning organic matter from plants, called biomass.Stoves change energy from burning biomass into electricity and heat.
