  • 2015ANNUAL REPORT

    ENDURING STRENGTH. UNWAVERING COMMITMENT.

MEMBER FDIC NORWAY BANCORP, MHC SINCE 1866

  • It is such a pleasure to address the great year we experienced in 2015, not only because it was a strong one for Norway Savings Bank, but because it’s the year that leads us to our 150th Anniversary. One hundred and fifty years... It is such an enormous milestone. Not only surviving, but in fact thriving for a century and a half, is a tremendous accomplishment. I am humbled and delighted to lead the Bank as we recognize our history, and make exciting plans for the future.

There are many reasons Norway Savings Bank has enjoyed such longevity. But, of course, it comes down to our customers. You are at the forefront of every benchmark we celebrate and every decision we make. We honor you by staying true to the values on which we were founded 150 years ago: honesty, hard work, mutual respect, and community leadership. These are the very values that made this past year so successful.

In 2015, we achieved record earnings and grew the balance sheet to over $1 billion in assets. Norway Savings Bank is now the third largest Maine-based mutual bank. We grew our loans, deposits, asset management accounts, and GenGold sales. We installed a new loan origination system, implemented advanced email marketing techniques, and began the job of issuing EMV chip-enabled debit cards to our customers.

These financial achievements allowed us to attain another founding goal this past year: giving back. In 2015, Norway Savings Bank supported more than 400 nonprofits with donations and

sponsorships. In addition to serving on boards and committees of 45 different organizations in our service area, our employees volunteer their time and talent in a variety of ways including: working with high school students on interviewing and communicating in a business setting; empowering students with developmental disabilities to open and operate their own bank accounts; guiding professional millennials on the role and impact of philanthropy; fostering the humane treatment of animals; teaching financial literacy; and leading Boy and Girl Scout troops. These are just a few examples of how the spirit of giving is alive and well at Norway Savings Bank.

As we move into our 150th year, we focus on continued growth and development of existing markets, new technology research and implementation, as well as improving the overall customer experience. We will introduce both Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. And we will explore Customer Relationship Management systems in an effort to enhance efficiency and provide greater customer service.

Please enjoy this brief walk through our history on the pages of this report. And know that as we celebrate our anniversary, what we’re really celebrating is you, our customers. Thank you for 150 years of trust, dedication, and teamwork. We are proud to be your steadfast partner and look forward to continuing to serve you and strengthen our communities for years to come.

    —PATRICIA WEIGEL, PRESIDENT & CEO

In 1866, fourteen men came together to form a bank that would stand the test of time. We are honored to celebrate 150 years, and we owe it to our faithful customers and the values on which we were founded. We’ve experienced tremendous growth and evolved with the industry — and through it all kept our principles intact. Paramount among those principles is our commitment to fiscal responsibility. This past year is a testament to that commitment as we reached an exciting milestone of breaking $1 billion dollars in assets. We are excited to see what the next 150 years bring, and to continue serving the great people of Maine.
