ST. MICHAEL'S CHOIR SCHOOL

ST. MICHAEL'S CHOIR SCHOOL

was

established in 1937 to serve the People ofGod in the Archdiocese of Toronto byeducating and training the boys who sing inthe cathedral's choirs. Service to theEucharistic community remains at the heartof the choir school's mission, and thisvocation continues to shape and guide all itsactivities.

With the Most Reverend Thomas Collins,Archbishop of Toronto, as its chancellor,

operates as

a unique collaboration between theArchdiocese of Toronto and the TorontoCatholic District School Board. With anenrollment limited to 280 boys, the schooloffers a complete curriculum of academicstudies from Grades 3 to 12 that meets thehighest standards of the school board andthe Ontario Ministry of Education. Thedistinctive learning environment features astrong, supportive sense of community, withindividual attention, small class sizes and afocus on preparing for university entrance.

About Us The choral programme is designed to fostera lifelong interest in music: many graduatesgo on to serve the musical life of their ownparishes, while some pursue professionalcareers in music. The course of studyincludes daily classroom instruction in musicrudiments and singing, weekly individuallessons in piano, organ and otherinstruments, as well as choral rehearsalsand preparation for a regular schedule ofperformances in the cathedral and at otherspecial events.

In a very special way,

embodies some

of the best aspects ofboth private and publiceducation. In recentyears, both theelementary andsecondary divisions haveranked at the very top ofsurveys of the quality ofOntario's publicly fundedschools. In terms of itsacademic achievement andoverall reputation,

is compared very

favorably with some of themost prestigious private schoolsin the Toronto area.

The admission process is highly selective: ofthe hundreds who audition, only 32 boys willbe offered a place in the training years(Grade 3 & 4) each year. Depending onopenings, there are often possibilities forboys to enter in higher grades and even inhigh school, but in those circumstances, newapplicants must demonstrate a level of skilland achievement that equals the experienceof choir school training.

Cathedral Choral Tradition

Many visitors to St. Michael's Cathedralmake a point of attending one of the threeweekend Masses where the renowned boys'choirs regularly sing in order to experience arich cathedral choral tradition that reachesback to the 1920s—when Monsignor J. E.Ronan, one of the pioneers in the 20 -century renewal of Catholic liturgical music, first established a choir of men and boys atthe cathedral.

From September to June, the two seniorchoirs sing on Saturdays at the 5 p.m.

Mass and Sundays at the noon Mass, and the junior choir sings at the

Sunday 10:30 a.m. Mass. Theelementary choir (Grades 3and 4) has a tradition ofsinging in the cathedral onChristmas morning, and joinswith the other choirs toparticipate in the annualMassey Hall concerts, oneof the high points of theyear for both the boys

and their families.

Service to thecathedral remains the

focus for choral activities, and various groups of boys

sing at wedding and funeralliturgies, as well as for the major cathedralevents celebrated by the Archbishop. At thesame time,

has a long tradition of sharing its music withothers by giving concerts in variouscommunities, at churches and musicfestivals, and undertaking occasional tours inCanada and abroad. Recent plans haveincluded appearances at the StratfordFestival and at an international choralfestival in Prague.
