Rubber Dam Materials

(i) Medium – weight(ii) Thin – weight:(iii) Heavy – weight:

(i) Light. It provides betterillumination of the field

(ii) Dark. It provides a sharp contrastbetween the tooth & the darkbackground.

. The rubber dam comes in precutsheets of different dimensions.:

A) Thickness

B) Color

C) Size

The purpose of rubber dam frame is to hold the rubberdam in a manner to:

1) Provide lip & cheek retraction.2) Provide unobstructed access to the tooth to be treated.

Rubber Dam Frame

1- Type A. This is called Young’s frame

Page 15: Endo7

2- Type B. This is called Starvisi frame

3- Type C. This is called Nygard – Ostby frame

Rubber Dam Clamps

The R.D. clamp is used to grasp the tooth

needed to be endodontically treated and

secure the rubber dam material and frame

in place.

• It is a n instrument used to create a hole inrubber dam.

• The hole should be clear without any tags ortears.

• The size of the hole punched or createddepends on the tooth to be isolated.

• The puncture provides this hole to givemaximum adaptation of the rubber dam aroundthe tooth.

Rubber Dam Puncture

Sometimes it’s called a forceps.

This holder or forceps is used to place the

clamp on the tooth by grasping the R.D. clamp

from 2 lateral holes and widening the clamp to

fit on the tooth.

Methods of Applying The Rubber DamMethod 1: Application of the clamp & rubber dam together

Page 25: Endo7
Page 26: Endo7

1- It doesn’t permit direct visualization of the tooth & softtissues during placement.

1- Easy & fast.2- It doesn’t require the aid of assistance.3- If the clamp snaps during placement, it’s held by the dam.

Page 27: Endo7

Method 2 – Application of clamp & then dam.

Page 28: Endo7
Page 29: Endo7

Advantages

1-It allows unobstructed visualization of the tooth &surrounding tissues during clamp placement.

2- Its most efficient method of dam placement ifthere’s difficulty in securing the clamp.

Disadvantages

1- Tearing of the dam.

2- Dislodgment of clamp during rubber dam drawing.

Page 30: Endo7

Method 3 – Application of dam & then the clamp

Page 31: Endo7
Page 32: Endo7

Disadvantage

- It needs help of assistance especially in post. teeth asthe mandibular molars.

Advantages

- There’s little tendency to dislodgement of the clampduring placement.- It provides direct visualization of the tooth & adjacentgingiva.
