This week we are shining our “Onthe Block and Making aDifference” spotlight on Rev.
Fred Conwright, Sr. Many of our readers may not
know him as Pastor Fred Conwright. But he may be more familiar to manyof us as one of the owners of TwoPodners Restaurant who sports asailor’s cap whenever he is away fromthe pulpit.
I was curious to get to know theman behind the sailor cap and themouth-watering meals his staff servesat any one of his restaurants, and theman the congregation at Greater Mt.Hebron Baptist Church calls Pastor.
He hails from Ore City, Texas, asmall town located in Upshur County, just 13 miles northeast of Gilmer,Texas. He is the oldest of 9 children. He lost his father at the tender age of
15, and ever since hehas always been thehead of his family; theone his mother andsiblings look up to forstrength and support.
So, he graduatedfrom Ore City HighSchool one day andheaded to Dallas thenext day. He says hecame to Dallas tobetter himself. Andhe’s done just that!
Now, you know Ihad to ask him aboutthe sailor cap healways wears. He toldme he once owned aseafood place, so hestarted wearing the cap.In 1981, when he and his partnerJames Runnels opened Two Podnersrestaurant, he would always wear his
sailor cap. Thesailor cap be-came his trade-mark. He told mehe has traveledall over theworld, and eventhough peoplemay not know his
name, they know the cap and theyoften say, “You’re the man who ownsTwo Podners restaurant in Dallas.”And, if you haven’t stopped by a TwoPodners Restaurant to get your grubon, you should. It makes for somereally good eating.
There are photos of some of themost famous and notable people inthe world hanging on the walls of therestaurant at the Fair Park location.

Psalms 50:17“Call upon me inthe day of troubleand I will deliveryou and you willhonor me, says theLord.”
An email mess-age I receivedthe other day
concerning the writ-ing of the weekly
message troubled me, but I did not getdistressed. I knew it was the devil inter-fering in Gods business so I just movedon. Paul reminds us that even though youmay think you are at the end of your rope, you are never without hope. Paul faced allkinds of troubles, hardships and adversityfor the sake of the Lord Jesus and Hiskingdom’s ministries.
Regardless of the risks, humiliationsand trials you can see all of these asopportunities for Jesus to demonstrate Hisgreater power, purpose and plan in and
through us for His greater glory.Too many people fall in to the trap of
feeling like they are a victim of theircircumstances. An article I read in USNews and World Report said: "Expertvictimologists estimate that 91.2% ofpeople in North America and Europe nowqualify as victims, at least in their ownminds. This is because hurt feelings keepspreading, and "society" keeps grindingus down.
Here are a few guidelines for overcomingtrouble instead of allowing yourself tobecome a victim of your troubles:
1.Praise God for the trouble: He hasallowed in your life as He knows what isbest in every situation. David wrote inPsalm 46:1-4 "God is our refuge andstrength. A very present help in the timeof trouble. Therefore, we will not fear.Though the earth be removed and thoughthe mountains be carried into the midst ofthe sea. Though the waters roar and betroubled, though the mountains shakewith the swelling thereof. There is a river
the streams thereof shall make glad thecity of God, the holy place of thetabernacles of the most High."Amen!
2. Rest: Praise God and realize that ourGod is sovereign who can do whatever Hepleases. It is the right for a sovereign, omnipotent, and omniscient God to knowhow trouble will work for the good forthose who love God and are calledaccording to His purpose. God is on thethrone He does whatever He pleases. Jobwas able to say, "Though he slay me yetwill I praise Him." Praising God helps usdraw upon the goodness, love and allsufficient grace of Christ so that we areable to rejoice in our infirmities for whenwe are weak, then He is strong. The lesswe have the more we depend on Him forour strength, hope and will in our lives.
3. Relinquish your rights: Jesus said inMatthew 5:3, "Blessed are the poor inspirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."Amen! "The poor is from the Greekptokas, a noun that means poor in thisworld’s goods; a beggar, desperately
ashamed even to allow his identity to beknown. It is not just poor, it is beggingpoor. He is absolutely incapable, totallydependent on grace. "In spirit means withreference to the inner man not the body. That is all. He is begging on the inside, notnecessarily on the outside.
Psalms 34:18 says, “The Lord is nearto those that have a broken heart andsaves such as have a contrite spirit.”Psalms 51:17 says, "The sacrifices of Godare a broken spirit; a broken and acontrite heart, O God. You will notdespise." God identifies with people whobeg on the inside, not people who areself-sufficient, not people who think theycan work out their own salvation. Poor inspirit does not mean lazy or quiet orindifferent or lacking enthusiasm orpassive. A poor in spirit individual is onewith no sense of self-sufficiency."

The Dallas Mavericks have beenthe center of my attention sincethe inception of the organization
back in 1980, when then businessmenDon Carter and Norm Sunju petitionedthe NBA to bring an NBA team toDallas. Before the Mavericks, the lastprofessional basketball team in Dallashad been the Dallas Chaparrals of theAmerican Basketball Association. TheChaparrals moved to San Antonio in
1973 and became the San AntonioSpurs. The Mavericks came to Dallasat a time when the Metroplex wasready for more than just the DallasCowboys, and at that time, the winlessTexas Rangers. The Mavs came inwith a splash that wet up the floor andnot in a good way. They were“Terrible” with a capital “T.” AbdoulJalaney was one of the team playersat the time. When was the last timeyou had a steaming fresh bowl ofDallas Mavericks basketball?
Today, the Mavericks are headed
in a different direction under theleadership of Head Coach Rick Carlisleand the ownership of Mark Cuban. The Mavericks are doing the same asthey did under the “Little General,”Avery Johnson. They are playingdefense, but the difference is theybrought in Tyson Chandler, an athleticcenter with skills and a motor THATJUST WON’T STOP RUNNING - andthat’s just what they need. His friends, namely Dr. Bill Blair, call
him the Duckin man”, his
signature attire, because he is a
hard worker, and he is always dressed
for work.
He came to Dallas in 1964, (legend
has it he walked) from the small town of
Itasca, Texas. He began his teaching
career at Booker T. Washington High
School and concluded a 40 plus year
teaching career in 2005, at Lincoln High
School. But, this week we want to
introduce our readers to Mr. Jerry Bob
Chambers: “The Duckin’ Man”.
I am certain that Mr. Jerry Bob
Chambers has touched the lives of
thousands and thousands of young men
and women as an Educator at Booker T.
Washington and Lincoln High Schools,
but it is his work after his retirement
from Dallas Independent School District,
that has earned him the nickname, “The
Duckin’Man”. He often jokes with us
here at Elite that he wears his duckins
because he is always working. It’s not
the kind of work you think about when
you see him in his duckins. He does not
do any physical labor, like building
houses, or mowing lawns, like he once
did to earn extra money, his work is all
about preserving and teaching the
history of African Americans, to
residents especially young African
American men and women here in the
city of Dallas.
His latest project hits especially close to
home. While celebrating the 89th birth-
day of our Founder and Senior Publisher,
this past October 18th
“The Duckin’Man”
announced he thought it
would be fitting and proper
to name a Park in honor of
Mr. William Blair, Jr. And no
sooner than he spoke the
words, he hung up his
fancy suit, and donned his
denim duckins and began
the work of naming a park
in the City of Dallas after
our very own Dr. William
“Bill” Blair, Jr.
Now, “The Duckin’
Man” is no stranger to this kind of work.
He currently serves as President of the
Friends of Opportunity Park. He is the
Chairman of the L.B. Nelson Historical
Cemetery, he has chaired every naming
facility at Lincoln High School, and he is
the chair of the Tiger Land Project, a
project that seeks to build a monument
to highlight the achievements of former
Lincoln High School alums. Just a few
weeks after the “Duckin’ Man made the
announcement, “William “Bill” Blair, Jr.
Ballpark and William “Bill” Blair, Ballpark
Way” is well on it’s way to becoming a
reality. The site has been chosen and
plans to rename Rochester Park and
Rochester Street in honor of Dr. William
Bill Blair, Jr. are in high gear. The
Duckin’ Man says this city needs to
know about African American men and
women who have made significant
contributions to the history and legacy
of Dallas. “And, whenever you talk
about legends in Dallas, the con-
versation should not begin or end
without talking about Dr. William “Bill”
Blair”, said Mr. Chambers.
So, the “Duckin’ Man” has put all of
us here at Elite News to work on the
BILL BLAIR AND JERRY “THE DUCKIN’ MAN”CHAMBERS

“Why did God Create and formthe World? Genesis 1:1-2, 3-31
Genesis 2:1-7
Most people and Biblescholars overlook ormisinterpret why God
actually created the world. Before we get into why
God created and made theworld. Let’s take a look atGenesis 1:1. Many peoplethink this verse deals with thefact that God created theworld perfect and some typeof judgment came into playcaused by Satan, and God hadto redo everything, because ofverse 2. Which says that the earth waswithout form and void. The word void iswhat caused all the misunderstanding. Many people believe that there is a GAPbetween verse one and verse two. Theythink that the first world was destroyedaccording to the word “VOID” This wordonly meant that when God startedcreating the world, that it was unformedand unfilled. The Hebrew words
Tohu – Wabohu which meansunformed and unfilled – (without life). The NIV Bible has it right in verse 2.Verse 2 was the initial act of creation, not verse 1. Verse 1 was only a summarystatement made by Moses; thisstatement had nothing to do with thebeginning of creation. All Hebrew writersmake summary statements when theywrite. Moses was no different. He simply
states what God did, and then he goeson to tell how God did what He done.
God’s act of creation reallystarted in verse 2., not verse1. Many people say that Godhad to redo the world at alater time, which could havebeen millions of years later, which is called the GapTheory. In creation of theworld Moses uses the word“YOM” which means oneday, not years. The word“YOM” in Hebrew means 24-hour day.
I cannot see anyonethinking that God wouldever let anything or
anybody destroy anything that He made.In the first place God did not make theworld for Himself, or, His own pleasure.God made the world because of His love.God Himself is love, and He neededmore than just Angels to share His lovewith, because He has so much of it. Godwanted another being that He might beable to share more of His love with, soGod created mankind in His mind. Inorder for mankind to survive, man hadto be placed into an environment suchas the world in order for him to survive. So, we see that God really made theentire world for mankind and not just forHimself. God did not need the world,God was in eternity living with theAngels that He had already created, andhaving fellowship with His son Jesus theChrist. So, we see that God did not needthe world for Himself.
Everything went the way it wasdesigned to go in eternity, so why wouldGod create something that He knew wasgoing to go just the opposite of whatGod represents. Yes, you guessed it, Hedid it just for man. God created anenvironment that man could live, because there was not another placesuitable for man to survive. If you willnotice, after the statement Moses madein the first verse, God started formingthe world in verse 2. God put the thingsinto the world that man would need inorder to survive, and live within it’sconfines. Look what God does. He putenergy into the world. Oxygen,Nitrogen, heat, cold, light (day) to work, night (darkness) for man to rest andsleep, trees, and all types of plants, justto name a few of the things man wouldneed. God did not need any of thesethings in eternity, so why would Godcreate and make them? He made theworld and everything in it for mankind. This world was made and designed forman. Everything that was put on planetearth was for the benefit of man. Land, animals, fowls of the air, water animals, vegetation, and everything is for thebenefit of man. So, we see that beyondany doubt, that this world we live in wasmade specifically for mankind, and forhim only was it created and made.
Let us not forget to read our Bibles.May the Lord bless you REAL GOOD , andmay He ever keep you in His loving care.

Out of the Eyes of a LaymanFrom the Mount
At this time of year it isthe fading practice ofmany people to reflect
on the year past, anticipatethe year to come, and createa list of New Year'sresolutions. I say "fadingpractice" because, in fact,I'm not sure there are verymany people who actuallydo this anymore - we justtalk about it. It used to bethat we would pat ourselveson the back if we had goodintentions, but now we'vetaken a further stepbackward and are content to
merely think about having good intentions. I can'thelp but remember the words of the Pastor of mychildhood church who often commented, "The roadto hell is paved with good intentions."
So let's revisit resolutions. Obviously, thinkingabout resolutions requires us to consider ourpriorities - serious New Year's resolutions willcertainly involve making promises to be faithful to dothose things which are really important to us. Jesushas this in mind when He taught us to "Seek first thekingdom of God.” Matters related to the spirit aremore important that matters of matter.
In addition, helping us identifies our priorities, several times throughout Scripture we find thephrase, "one thing" - here are four examples: Davidacknowledged the importance of worship: "One thingI ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I maydwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seekhim in his temple." (Psalms 27:4)
Worship is a priority. When Jesus wasconfronted with the man we call the "Rich YoungRuler", he told him what needed to be done to inheriteternal life: "'One thing you lack,' he said. 'Go, selleverything you have and give to the poor, and youwill have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"(Mark 10:21)
Giving to the needy is a priority. Then there's thewonderful story of Jesus' visit to the home of Lazarus,Mary and Martha. When Martha complained thatMary wasn't carrying her part of the work load, Jesussaid, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upsetabout many things, but only one thing is needed.Mary has chosen what is better and it will not betaken away from her." (Luke 10:41,42)
Learning from Jesus is a priority. Paul, notwanting to be boastful of his past, makes clear hisown priority when he writes: ". . . one thing I do:Forgetting what is behind and straining toward whatis ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prizefor which God has called me heavenward in ChristJesus." (Philippians 3:13, 14)
Pressing forward is a priority. However, theconcern today is not so much about makingresolutions as it is about being resolute. This is howWebster’s dictionary defines this word: (rez' o-lut) -"Having, or being characterized by, a decidedpurpose; determined; resolved; hence, bold; firm;steady." My suggestion is that as we face the comingyear, let us take advice from the Scriptures andbecome resolute in these six areas: faith, doctrine, personal associations, prayer, giving, and serving.

Resolutions Let me remind you again that “FamilyPrayer” plays an important part in ourcommunity as well as in the home. Thegoal of the home will produce great
worth in ourc o m m u n i t i e ssuch as, ourchurch, schoolsand businessc ommun i t i e s .The majority ofChristian parentssadly overlookthe necessity andthe advantage ofprayer in thehome. Much ofour juvenile de-linquency and
the corruption of the family life in ournation are due to neglect of our familyalter. We can clearly see the retributionJeremiah mentions when he says “ Pourout thy anger upon the families that callnot on thy Name”. (Jeremiah 10:25)
Dear Dr. Hollie,
Ihave created aserious problem formy family, maybe too
serious to write about inan advice column; but Ido appreciate the helpthat you give to others, and well, I've got to startsomewhere. My hus-band and I have beenmarried 8 years. Wehave two kids andwe're both finallymaking a well enoughliving to keep us comfortable andmostly worry-free. In past con-versations, we've discussed whetheror not we'd want more kids. I amabsolutely positive that I don't wantanymore, but my husband thinks weshould have one more. However, despite the precautions I've taken, Ifound myself pregnant again severalmonths ago. Without my husband'sknowledge, I had an abortion.Without anyone's knowledge, act-ually, because I went alone and toldno one. Now I am having seriousregrets, but I am too afraid to tell myhusband. I don't think he could
forgive me for this. But the guilt iseating me up. I don't knowwhat to do. I've beenthinking that maybe if I getpregnant again, it will puteverything right. Please tellme where I begin.Hidden Guilt
Dear Hidden Guilt, I hope that you are a
person of faith becauseit is what you will needto bring you through thiscrisis. I would start by
asking God for forgiveness, followedby forgiving myself. Self forgivenessis difficult but essential. Giveyourself some time to process youremotions, and then approach yourhusband. The truth shall set youfree. Another pregnancy will notreplace the shame or the pain, healing should be your only focus.

BarBerShOP talk with leON SimON
There is a veryi n t e r e s t i n gs i t u a t i o n
brewing in Nashville,Tennessee. It couldbe a power struggleof landmarkproportion. I don’tthink this is simply acase of quarter back
and coach not being able to co- exist; Ihave an idea Jeff Fisher could be the lastbastion of hope for the Tom Brady, TroyAikman type quarter backs.
There has been tons of money put intothat position, and even more money tokeep that position healthy. Left tackles aregetting record amounts of money to protectthat stand up QB.
I think there’s a new beast on thehorizon; I think the Philadelphia Eagles triedto go to an Otto Graham, type in Kevin Kolb. And like Columbus going west to reacheast, discovering a new land. Philadelphiacould have started a revolution in the NFLthat’s inevitable. Denver tried it with TimTebow and, I don’t know if Tebow will beable to make the transition but the writingis on the wall. They’re about to get the QBfrom under center, and put him in a shotgunthat’s almost complete.
They’re bringing in the “Wildcat” moreand more that position is destined to getmore athletic.
Vince Young might not be disciplinedenough to be a pioneer for that positionchange, but believe me its coming. Thenew wave is to get more production out of
that position. The colleges are the pioneers. Cam
Newton , the young man from Auburn had6 games of over 150 yds. rushing; at 6’6 –250 pounds , extremely athletic and has acannon for an arm. Ohio State’s TerrellPryor 6’6 – 233 lbs. is almost a carbon copyof Newton. Oregon’s Darron Thomas, 6’3212 is not as big as Newton, and Pryor, neither is Michael Vick, and he’s doing it onSundays now.
If an offensive minded coach wouldcommit to the idea, Vince could do whatVick is doing. Fisher is trying to changehim. Texas did too until they realized he iswhat he is, and won a NationalChampionship. They beat the guy Fisherwished Vince was, Matt Linert. Where isMatt now?
I’m not saying all of these young men areheaded for stardom. When they put theforward pass in all of those guys were notas efficient as Otto Graham, that’s the waythe game went.
There is always the danger of these guysgetting injured running, more and thenthese guys bolt to the ground like theCowboys did Tony Romo. These guys canstill slide feet first when they get in harm’sway.
I think the Cowboys tried to dabble in thisconcept with Quincy Carter, and maybe asearly as Reggie Collier. Neither experimentwas successful, but how many stand upquarterback did the Cowboys go throughbetween Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman? This is not a documentary – just Barbershop talk. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!

Center, Chandler turned out anothertremendous performance pulling down18 rebounds in a quarter that gave himthe record set previously by PopeyeJones – his was 12 in a quarter. As theMavericks went on to beat the lowlyMinnesota Timberwolves 100 to 86. Tyson Chandler hasbeen a Godsend, helping the Mavericksto a 14 and 4 record. At the start of theseason, Coach Carlislesaid that Chandler iskey for us every night. He’s naturally en-ergetic and exuberantperson. Chandler alsoadds to a Nowitzki ledteam.
Most people that have had thechance to see Chandler on a regularbasis know what he is capable of playinga great game, but for the last year or sohe has been plagued by nagging injuriesand was not able to show the fullpackage. Hats off to the Maverick’sbrass, Donnie Nelson and Mark Cuban, for realizing what most people missed –that Chandler is athletic energetic and
seems to give you all he has game aftergame. I’m excited about this season andlook forward to a consistent and deeperrun into the playoffs before the nucleusgets too old to take us to the promiseland. For the first time in team history, center Tyson Chandler and the Mavs
starting lineupseems to worke f f o r t l e s s l ytogether whichmakes for winsand a deeper runinto the playoffs.Well, I know it’searly in the seasonand yes youguessed it, I’m ahomer who hasbeen a Mavericks
fan from the fist year they came to townand opened at Reunion Arena, which isno longer in existence, and a formerReunion Roudy fan and proud of it. DR. WILLIAM M.CAMPBELL
The church School lesson was “God
delivers and Protect” Ps.91:1-6,9-
16. The Psalmist began this psalm
saying “Those who live in the shelter of
the Most High will
find rest in the
shadow of the
Almighty”. For the
rest of the psalm
he speaks of the
benefits, blessings
and protection
that those that
“live” in the
presence of God
enjoy. Although
many may desire
all the promises of God, they don’t want
to abide in his presence. The Psalmist
personalizes his relationship with the
Almighty with the pronoun “I” and the
adjective “my” when he refers to God.
God wants to have this personal
relationship with everyone that is willing
to submit to his will by accepting the
Lord Jesus Christ his son as their saviour.
The morning message was delivered by
Pastor L.T.Morgan from the subject
“Turning testing into Temptation” James
1:13-17. The mature believer is patient
in trials. Sometimes the trials are
tastings on the outside, and sometimes
they are temptations on the inside. Trials
may be tests sent by God, or they may
be temptations sent by Satan and
encouraged by our own fallen nature. It
is this second aspect of trials -
temptations on the inside - that James
dealt with in the text. What is the
relationship between testing’s without
and temptations within?" When our
circumstances are difficult, we may find
ourselves complaining against God,
questioning His love, and resisting His
will. At this point, Satan provides us with
an opportunity to escape the difficulty.
This opportunity is a temptation. A
temptation is an opportunity to
accomplish a good thing in a bad way,
out of the will of God. It is not wrong to
eat; but if you consider stealing the food,
you are tempting yourself to sin.
Be steadfast: God bless and keep you.
ELD LLOYD T.MORGAN
Notes From Union Hoperenaming of Rochester Park and
Rochester Road and designing a statue
in honor of our Founder and Senior
Publisher. According to his friends and
colleagues, it is already done! “He is a
person you can count on. “He is a man
of his word and he is a man of integrity”,
said Dr. Juanita Wallace, President of the
Dallas Chapter of the NAACP.
“Mr. Jerry Bob Chambers is a
champion for students, his school and
community. “Mr. Chambers is an
inspiration to all”, said his friend and
former colleague, Mrs. Dorothy Wilson.
“When I came to Lincoln, I was told he
was the one individual on the Staff who
will support you and help you any way
he can.” “He understands and app-
reciates children. “It is his desire to
make sure children are taught their
history and understand their past. “The
L.B. Nelson Cemetery is a reality due to
the hard work and efforts of Mr. Jerry
Bob Chambers”, said Mr. Earl Jones.
“I wish there were more men in this
city like “The Duckin’Man”. He is a hard
worker and his work definitely speaks for
him,” said Elite Publisher Jordan Blair.

The Boyzshould be 3-0 underJason Garrett, but we all saw thatcrappage last weekend. As my favoritecountry comedian Larry "The CableGuy" says, "Get her done"! I love theepisodes of "Real Housewives OfAtlanta"...My partner BloodhoundBenny is reporting that Kim Zolciak ofBravo's "Housewives" is engaged toAtlanta Falcons star Kroy Biermann, thefather of her unborn child. "Theywanted to announce it in a nationalmagazine, but Kim was so excited thatshe told a couple of close friends aboutit," a source told the website."Obviously, they are both really happyabout both the baby and theirengagement and cannot wait to starttheir new lives together." The sourceadded that Kroy, 25,bought Kim, 32, a"substantial" ring shehas yet to wear inpublic. I know shewon't be "tardy forthe party"!!! YO, HipHop Headz!
