From the Principal (Cont.)

Thank you to everyone who purchased books or posters and to those who then donated some of these back to the school to be used a book prizes at the end of year awards or to go in to the library for borrowing.

Learning Journey Thank you to everyone who attended the Learning Journey last night. Every classroom received lots of positive feedback about the work and how the evening went. Again thank you to the wonderful P&C who sold sweet and savoury platters of food, soup and bread and hot drinks. Their support makes the school a better place.

Thank You In every school you get families moving in to the area and some moving out. It is always hard to say goodbye and thank you sufficiently to some families who have given so much to the school. Today I am saying goodbye to Nathan Smith who has sat on the School Board this year. Nathan and his family are moving due to a work transfer. I want to thank him on behalf of the community and wish him all the best for the move and the pending arrival of a baby sister or brother for Eloise.

RECORD BREAKING Athletics Carnival last week The children and community enjoyed perfect weather for the school Athletics Carnival. The children ran and ran all day with energy levels I can only dream of having. The whole day ran like a well-oiled machine due to the expertise and efforts of Chris Pettit who is our PE Teacher, staff and volunteers. The P&C did a wonderful job again selling cakes, biscuits and hot drinks. Thank you to everyone who contributed. This was a record breaking day with the following 11 new school records being set.

Interschool The Interschool competitions are this week with the Jumps and Throws being held yesterday and the athletics carnival being held tomorrow. Children who have been selected for the Interschool would have had a note come home advising parents and carers of the details and would have to have returned permission slips to be allowed to attend.

Raffle Winners At the assembly on Friday the five following winners were drawn from all the families that have paid their Voluntary Contributions this year: Vause family won a $50 voucher to Yealering Hotel Gifford family won a voucher for 2 meals at the New Cornwall Hotel Bilman family won a $100 meal voucher at the Narrogin Motel Day family won $110 Swimming lessons at the YMCA Narrogin Donaldson family won a family pass to the Kulin Aquatic Park

Kindy Enrolment and information sessions It is great to see the kindy enrolments coming in for 2019, with the first class almost full. Once the class has 20 students it will be full and further new applications to enrol will be placed on a wait list until we have enough to set up a second class. Information will be being sent out in the near future advising parents of dates and times for transition days which is when parents, carers and children can come in to the kindy and meet the teacher to experience how fun kindy can be. Parents and carers will also be receiving notification of an information session on the processes at school, introduce you to staff and explain a range of services that are available. At this meeting you will be given an induction package for your child and notified of their class. The school will also be running a Super Starters group over a number of weeks in Term 4 with professionals from the Health Department to help children be ready for school.

End of Term Term 3 finishes on Friday 21 September and the children and families will have two weeks of the school holidays to relax. School will resume on Monday 8 October for Term 4.

Snakes and Magpie Swooping Season With Spring comes the magpie nesting season and snakes will be coming out of hibernation. I was swooped a few weeks ago on my ride along the railway line and on the news last week there was a snake bite victim reported. So now is the time to talk to your children about what to do if they come across a snake or get swooped by a magpie. Magpies swoop to protect eggs and young from potential predators. They do this by flying low and fast to intimidate which can be alarming. Advice from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions suggest:

Never deliberately provoke or harass a magpie. Throwing sticks or stones usually makes them more defensive. Magpies have good memories and they may continuously swoop a potential aggressor.

Avoid areas where magpies are known to swoop. Remember, magpie hostility lasts only a few weeks and they usually only defend a small area of about 100m radius around their nest.

The Great Vegie Crunch On Friday 7 September our school participated in The Great Vegie Crunch, joining with schools from across Western Australia to simultaneously crunch on fresh vegetables – and have fun doing it! Did you know that only 1 in 6 WA school aged children are eating the daily recommended intake of vegies? The Great Vegie Crunch aims to change that and educate students on the importance of eating more vegetables. Thanks to the Cancer Council for donating fruit and vegetables for this wonderful event.

Monday Assembly Draw Week 9 and Week 10, Term 3 Congratulations to the following students who had their names drawn at last week’s Monday assembly. These students each had the chance to spin the ENE BEE WHEEL for a reward.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION TERM 4 This year the year 6 graduation will be at the Narrogin Reception Centre on Thursday 6 December, followed by a social at the same venue. The P&C will be catering for a shared sit down meal for the graduating class, with Year 5 volunteers helping on the night. Students are required to be dressed neatly in casual clothes. Thank you to Tenessa Presland for coordinating the decorations for this special event.

Kiss and Drop The kiss and drop zones are available at the front of the school and in the staff car park and are clearly marked in red writ ing “Kiss and Drop.”

How do you use the Kiss & Drop?

The Kiss & Drive works just the same as a taxi rank. Drive in from the top end of the Kiss & Drop and then drive forward ensuring that your vehicle is in the most forward available bay. The bays are clearly marked on the road.

DO NOT leave your vehicle and DO NOT turn off your motor as you will need to close up gaps as other students are collected and those vehicles move away from the area.

Students should enter/exit the vehicle from the LEFT side of the car, closest to the footpath. Students should wait until their pick up vehicle is in one of bays at the front of the rank. When they have safely entered/

exited the vehicle please proceed forward through vacant bays and indicate right before exiting; re-enter the traffic flow.

If you cannot see your child/ren waiting then you must move off and re-join the queue.

DO NOT DOUBLE PARK AT ANY TIME Dual Purpose Bus Bay: When the Kiss and Drop is not in operation, the bays are designated as normal car parking bays. Signage clearly indicates the hours of operation for Kiss and Drop and Bus Bay.

Locate the bird and keep watching it when entering its territory. If it swoops, don’t crouch in fear or stop, move on quickly but don’t run.

If you are riding a bike make sure you wear a helmet, and dismount and walk through nesting magpie territory.

Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella for protection. Magpies initially attack from behind but can swoop back around.

Adopt a confident stance as this can have a strong deterrent effect.

If you find a sick or injured magpie contact the Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055 for information on registered wildlife rehabilitators and centres who can assist you with your enquiry.

At this time of the year snakes are looking for food and a mate and some say they are at their most aggressive. The advice from the RSPCA is to not try and catch or kill the snake. Walk away from it slowly and keep an eye on which direction it is travelling in. Keep your pets safely away from it. The snake will usually move on in its own time as they don’t like contact with humans. If the snake is staying around and it needs to be removed, contact a licensed snake handler to have it removed. Snakes play a very important role in the environment and are protected under environmental legislation, so do not attempt to harm or remove them yourself.

Donation to Cystic Fibrosis It was a pleasant surprise this week to find out that when the school purchased a flat screen LCD panel for the Art/Science room as a part of the recent upgrade that the company that we dealt with, Concept AV, donated $50 to Cystic Fibrosis WA on the school’s behalf. Donations to Cystic Fibrosis WA contribute to advance the understanding and treatment of CF and to provide better support for those with the disease.

Sensory Garden As you would have seen and heard, the School & P&C have commenced work on developing a Sensory Garden next to the Library. We’re very excited to watch this project grow, working with staff, students and families to help it take shape. The garden will enable a variety of experiences: Science - Planting & studying growth, changes. Literacy/Numeracy – write/read/calculate growth, income and product. Health – support healthy eating and cooking. Business/Endeavour – harvest & sell produce, understand costs/work associated with producing food. Special Needs – great resource for children, sensory breaks. Achievement – taking the process from beginning to end Sustainability – exploring ways to manage the garden more sustainably (ie pest control, different methods of growing etc.). To date we have raised $1,880 for equipment and supplies for this exciting project. Thank you for supporting our recent fundraisers.

Secretary Position This position is now vacant and we are keen to fill it quickly! This role is very straight forward: record minutes and distribute them, help prepare meeting agendas, be able to attend the two meetings a term (Monday @ 7.00pm), and complete a few other admin type duties throughout the year. If you can help us out, please contact Marie on 0413 407 052.

Keeping your kids safe in traffic Over the last couple of weeks we have been focusing on how to keep safe around traffic in our community. Young children might try to make safe decisions and follow the road rules but because of their age they are often unable to identify dangers. That’s why it is extremely important for children under the age of 10 to hold an adults hand when crossing the road. As parents you can explain to your child that adults are more familiar with the road rules and can also decide when a situation is dangerous.

Stop, Look, Listen and Think Teach your child these simple steps to cross the road. STOP at least one step back from the kerb or edge of the road. LOOK in all directions for approaching traffic (left, right, front and back). LISTEN in all directions for sounds of approaching traffic. THINK before deciding if it is safe to cross. Tell your child to keep listening and looking for traffic while crossing the road. Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education. Have a wonderful break and I will see you all next term.
