I can hardly express my gratitude for giving me with this incred-ible opportunity to live and work in such an amazing place. I leave India with only the fondest memories of late work nights, interesting meetings of all kinds, and countless conversations over black milk tea. The RCDT was a brilliant concept that ben-efited all of us; I’ve made lasting relationships with you and my fellow interns alike, and for that I am especially grateful.

Southeast Asia still holds a special place in my heart. The experi-ences I have had there in 2009 and again this past summer only secure these passions. It won’t be long until we meet again.

By combining two standard Periyar rooms with gorgeous views of the reserve, I created a master suite that capitalized these views for a product unparalleled in the market.

The entire southwest facade of the suite is glazed to maintain optimal daylighting and unobstuct the views. A small dining area can be moved outside onto the entrance verandah or the sliding doors may be opened to create a simple indoor/outdoor space.

The bathroom is slightly raised on a plumbing plinth also to capture the views from the back of the suite. This way guests may gaze out to the lush Periyar ecosystem while washing their hands, brushing their teeth, or soaking in the tub.

The suite can be easily sold at a premium as either a guestroom or also a hospitality suite where small dining events or meet-ings may take place.

ANCHOR HOUSEThe BOH area and kitchen programming speculated general needs based on the number of guestrooms and the level of service desired by the developers. Then the programming was determined based on the necessary activities taking place within each space. When more specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are con-firmed, the programming may be altered to reflect them.

The kitchen is based off a very efficient straight service corridor design with special-ized function spaces flanking both sides to correlate with the flow of food produc-tion. Additionally the service loop was kept tight to facilitate a clear division between the flow of the BOH kitchen staff with the flow of FOH staff. The production areas (e.g. hot production, garde manger, bake shop, etc.) were based on international standards since the initial concept for the menu was not stricly Indian.

Other BOH function spaces found in the receiving area of the ground floor and above the kitchen in the first floor provide for mechanical, office space, stores, and staff support areas. Given the potential for an adjacent plot of land to be incorporated into the plan, these support services for staff could be relocated to capture more prime real estate above the kitchen for revenue generating functions (e.g. a bar or lounge).

BOH AREA AND KITCHEN PROGRAMMING

The comprehensive interiors report outlined 3 important analy-ses of the property:

_determined a positioning statement for the property and its role in the Raxa Colletive’s growing property portfolio

_assigned color palettes to each space considering each unique look and feel as well as the quality of light and pur-pose for each space

_provided a thorough punchlist of items needing attention and suggestions for improvements prior to opening the property for business

I assisted in the selection of ceramic, wood, fiber, and metal vessels to complement the interiors in the villa as a very simple intervention to alter the look and feel of the spaces.

I also exploited site photography to offer guests fresh perspec-tives of the property as well as give it an updated aesthetic with abstract modern printed canvases.

ARTWORK SELECTION AND CREATION

The fourth iteration for the Pampa Villa renovation. In this iteration, the exterior walls and existing plan were kept while the interior was transformed to take advantage of it’s assets - i.e. the proximity to Kerala’s beautiful backwaters.

The existing building was converted into just 3 large guest-rooms, a spacious verandah and outdoor living space, and a spectacular grand entrance (similar to iteration 3).

Iteration 4 shows a brand new dining pavilion located between the beautiful existing mango tree and the canal. Inside the din-ing pavilion is a large open area for guests, with the kitchen and staff support areas attached in the back. This way, the ser-vices are all close to facilitate greater efficiency but high levels of privacy are maintained. Although not shown in this drawing, the dining pavilion may also include public restrooms to sup-port large outdoor social events.

I’ve drawn the pavilion without walls, but it could be simply glassed in with operable options. And the roof of the pavilion would remain the same style as that of the rest of the property.

For selecting new paint colors for the accent wall in each of the house boats, I chose cool colors to contrast with the very warm natural hues from the materials that make up the boats. A saturated green, purple, and blue were selected for their ability to cooperate with the exciting slivers of light reflecting off the water that dance along the surface of the accent wall during the cruises.

The niches serve as small opportunities for either subtle or not-so-subtle punctuations in the accent wall plane. While they are currently being under-utilized, already just painting their interiors a slight off-white has made a drastic improvement in the direction of modernity and refinement. Simply replac-ing artwork with something new (something a little more in-teresting) is a light intervention and easy to implement. On the other hand, I had suggested installing a white LED ribbon along the interior sides, covering some forms with khadi fab-rics and stacking them, then covering the niche with a clear or frosted plexi. This would create a new and more intriguing artistic installation but require a little more work to implement.
