2018 is a year of encounters with the forces of destiny and the power of desire; forces and powers that weave tangled webs of existential dilemmas through which we explore the extremes of human experience, as only opera can. When the pain is too great to express in words, music provides the expressive release and the means to elevate our suffering to nobility, and explore transcendental truth.
The legends of heroic self-sacrifice, struggle and liberation, and the conflicts between personal need and public duty animate Rossini’s masterpiece William Tell.
Pelleas and Melisande explores desire and destiny in an enchanted sound world and landscape. The Capulets and the Montagues gives us Bellini’s version of the Romeo and Juliet story – doomed love realised through sublime melody.
Two Australian works, Calvin Bowman’s little charmer The Magic Pudding - The Opera and Julian Langdon, Casey Bennetto and Gillian Cosgriff’s hypnotic Lorelei, relieve the darker tones of the major works by seeing the possibilities of parody and humour in their fateful encounters.
Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel also makes a welcome return as our youngest audiences encounter opera and the Wicked Witch for the first time.
An extraordinary line-up of international and Australian singers join our brilliant creative teams in new productions. Our developing partnerships with Arts Centre Melbourne, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Orchestra Victoria, Palais Theatre, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the University of Melbourne are a source of great pride and help us to reimagine the potential of opera, for everyone.
Welcome and please enjoy!

Rossini’s final opera
Be part of history
Witness its Australian Premiere
The legendary tale of the sharp-shooting hero on a quest for freedom makes for grand opera: a struggle for liberty against oppression and the courage that victory demands.
One hundred and eighty-nine years after its Paris Opera debut, Rossini’s final masterwork, famed for its iconic overture, receives its Australian premiere. Epic opera demands epic staging and director Rodula Gaitanou (Royal Opera House, Opera Holland Park) and designer Simon Corder tackle Tell with grit and grandeur.
Hope illuminates a darkened world in this striking new production.

A secret affair
A family torn apart
A love too great for this world
When Golaud finds Melisande in the woods, alone and with a mysterious past, he claims her as his wife. After she meets his brother Pelleas, however, a secret love simmers between them while Golaud’s suspicions deepen. A family slowly corrodes as their tragic fates inevitably take hold.
Discover the haunting beauty of Pelleas and Melisande, the only opera from Claude Debussy. This symbolist masterpiece fuses text, ethereal harmonies and floating instrumental colour with an atmospheric poetry unlike any other work.
Hear the crystalline purity of Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg alongside celebrated tenor Angus Wood, in Debussy’s mesmerising opera.

‘I like my men like I like my whiskey...
On the rocks’
-Lorelei
Ancient myth meets modern woman in an allegory of resilience and reclaiming one’s destiny.
Lorelei is a take-no-prisoners, smash-them-on-the-rocks wild woman; a romantic, compassionate, trusting woman; a sensible, rational woman. A present-day enchantress, her past is heartbreak and her future promises haunting self-discovery.
This siren song finds strength in numbers with a trio of talent so alluring it’s impossible to resist. Ali McGregor, Dimity Shepherd and Antoinette Halloran await you at the rock for an intoxicating encounter with love and death: part cabaret, part opera, all seduction.
Their hypnotic music is to die for.

RP RELAXED PERFORMANCE
Hansel and Gretel 12 June, 1pm
A relaxed performance provides a calm environment for audiences with elements of the production adapted to reduce anxiety or stress. This environment is ideal for audience members with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome and those sensitive to sensory variance. Lighting and sound levels are adjusted to soften their impact; making noise and moving around the auditorium is welcome during the performance; and there are designated ‘chill-out’ areas in the foyer.

‘None of us have everbeen to an opera before, it was a new experience for all of us. My sister was enthralled the entire time and didn’t like it when it ended. My sister has GDD (Global Developmental Delay) so for her to watch the entire show was nothing short of extraordinary. Thanks!’
