TwoWonderful Christmastime concerts of seasonalclassics were conducted by the inimitable Carl Davis;our Spirit of Christmas carol concerts were a greatopportunity to hear the combined musical forces ofthe Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra andChoir and Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir, withguest soloist, the dynamic young Mexican tenor,Jesús León and the return of Classic FM’s John Suchetas presenter. Frosty and Friends offered familyaudiences an hour of sing-a-long fun; while JohnWilson conducted three concerts, one celebratingViennese waltz music, one exploring the music ofFrank Sinatra, and one bringing in the New Year witha hit parade of jazz and swing favourites.

“Tinsel-trimmed violins, fallingsnow, stained glass illuminationsand a mariachi Jesus? The Phil hascertainly risen to the challenge ofLiverpool’s most frantic festiveseason for years…this year’sprogramme confidently treading afine line between the ecclesiastical –a collection of some of the prettiestcarols I’ve heard in several years –and a sense of light-hearted fun.”

“On a rainy night in Liverpool …Philharmonic Hallshimmers as the lights fade, and then the screamingstarts. And here he is. It's 2013's Gary Barlow,black-suited and booted like a groovy undertaker, his chin gently drizzled with eight o'clock shadow...

Barlow reminds us that he's a great songwriter. Twentyyears on, A Million Love Songs has become a perfectlyjudged ballad about how hopeless boys can be.

The choruses ofThe Floodand Patience overflow witheuphoria, while 1995'sBack For Good, as we know, isfantastic. ...The encore brings Never Forget– confettifalling from the rafters on to the sequins below – andeven louder screams. A video of Take That through theyears plays as Barlow sings, – a reminder of just howdifferent things used to be. But that's Gary for you.Everything changes but him.”

Vasily Petrenko, Chief Conductor of the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic Orchestra “We are proud tobe part of this fantastic effort by so many artists tosupport the Hillsborough families. It’s a very powerfulsong and one that’s familiar to many people, so Ithink Guy (Chambers) and everyone involved in thesingle have done a great job with this newinterpretation.”

Thelma Handy, joint leader of the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra said: “I think all ourmusicians felt it was important for us to contribute tothe single and support the Hillsborough families. There was a lovely coincidence too in that producerGuy Chambers’ dad Colin was LiverpoolPhilharmonic’s Principal Flute for many years, andthere are still musicians in the orchestra, me included, who worked with Colin, who retired in 1999.”

Gethyn Jones, (sub-principal cello) said:“I've been amember of the Royal Liverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra for 28 years and a Liverpool football fansince I was a little boy. For me, this is a very specialmoment, to play on this wonderful recording and bydoing so, contribute in some small way to helping theHillsborough families."

Hilary Browning (cello) said:“I took part in recordingthe single because I wanted to show my support forthe Hillsborough families in their quest for justice. Ona more personal note, I was at college with Guy(Chambers) and haven’t seen him for some time so itwas really interesting to work with him on the single. And my kids are dead impressed!”

Rebecca Walters (viola) said: “I have friends whowere there that day, and friends who lost friends. Itwas an honour to contribute to the single and thefinished result is awesome; it moves me every time Ihear and watch it, the whole team have done abeautiful job.”

James Pattinson (violin) said: “Athough I was only 8in the year of the disaster, I'm often reminded of it bythe connection between my home town ofNottingham and now working in Liverpool. It'sextraordinary that so many people got involved in thesingle and it was a privilege to be able to contribute tosuch a worthy cause.”

By all accounts Van Morrison likes playingat the Philharmonic. And while he's notsomeone who exactly wears his heart on hissleeve you could be quietly confident heenjoyed last night's gig. And certainly so didthe full house that awaited his every note, mumble and wail….no-one was in any doubtthat they were in the presence of a truemaster of his craft, he had the hall in thepalm of his hand.
