Project 1: Gossip Literacy Narrative Requirements: 1200-1400 words, MLA format, bracketed word count at end of paper Purpose: This assignment’s goal is to help students situate their voice in writing and find their place within the conversation about gossip and gender through their own prior experiences. It reinforces the value of the student as a writer, experience and critical thinking. The Assignment: This assignment has two components--the description of a specific experience paired with a reflection that shows what was learned/ gained from the experience. The Gossip Literacy Narrative highlights a moment in time wherein gossip played a key role in the student’s life. It can be a positive or negative experience. The student could be the victim of gossip or the ring-leader (or an innocent bystander). Pay attention to detail as you explain the experience--remember your audience was most likely not present so we need to know everything. Driving Questions/Things to Keep in Mind: 1)What was the role of gossip in this experience? 2)Who was involved? 3)What was involved? 4)Why is it important? 5)What was your role? 6)Where did it happen? 7)What did you learn from this experience? 8)How did it shape your perspective on gossip in society? 9)Did you gender play a role in how gossip functioned? *Do not simply answer these questions, but use them as a guide for your writing and refer to them if you hit a road block.
