Major challenges identified

Problem 1: No equipment: lack of funds resulting

in lack of equipment (e.g. irrigation equipment to

save water, labour & energy); lack of skills and

knowledge to operate equipment; theft.

Problem 2: Farm management: poor agronomic

management and low yields; lack of water; human

resources issues; poor financial management

Problem 3: Marketing – lack of exposure: lack of

information on marketing and pricing; lack of

packaging materials and facilities; not producing

according to market demand and standards

Involving local farmers and extension

service in the experiments

Comparative testing of irrigation scheduling : • plots with fertigation/irrigations

scheduled according to farmers’ experience and according to soil moisture monitoring

• Tomato seedlings, varieties

commonly used • Supplied by local suppliers • Planted with the assistance of LDA

Response from farming community

Good acceptance as experiment is fully executed by local staff from LDA

Direct comparison of field trials on the cooperative land created permanent curiosity

Strong extra yield created high farmer to farmer interest during the field day

Harvested tomatoes had actually been sold to SPAR to cover expenses

Conclusion

Private sector initiatives drive future use of land and water resources

Scaling issue: from local scale to river basin scale

Need to support strategic decision making for the allocation of land and

water resources (with respect to land tenure, water rights etc.)

Participative scenario building to identify upcoming plans

Outlook

TouchScene • Draw upcoming land

development plans

• Visualize urban developments

• Direct assessment of remaining water resources

• Visualize resulting inclusive economic development

• Define water and land demands for nature conservation

Acknowledgement

The work had been particulary enabled within the framework of the project

EAU4food (funded by the EU within the FP7 under the KBBE program -

265471) and

InnoGiyani (funded by the Dutch Government , FDOV12SA03)

It had received great stimulation by all consortium members of EAU4Food,

InnoGyiani and the Alterra Wageningen UR Focus point – Green Economic

Growth).
