ctober witnessed the graduation of Cebu-
mentees under the Kapatid Mentor Me Program
(KMMe) of the DTI.
Belonging to the third batch of the KMMe program, these
entrepreneurs had a 12-week mentorship program which
the DTI and the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship
(PCE)-Go Negosyo implemented in cooperation with the
Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Modules in-
troduced during the mentorship include business model
canvas, entrepreneurial mindsetting and values for-
mation, marketing, operations management, and supply
value chain, among others.
Meanwhile, Entrepreneurs in Inabanga, Bohol and those
in neighboring municipalities aspiring to start their own
business now have a place to go if they need help with
their business. DTI opened a Negosyo Center in Ibanaga
this month. The Negosyo Center is a one-stop shop of
services intended to support startup and existing enter-
prises, The center offers three core services: business
registration assistance; business advisory in the areas of
product development, market access, financing, and in-
vestment promotions; and business information and ad-
vocacy.

like Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Mother’s Day and All
Souls Day. Together with her son, she later added
event packages, balloon and party needs, photo and
video services, flower arrangement and stage decors to
their list of products and services.
With the stiff market competition and with new services
being offered by her company, Julia knew she had to
improve the way she managed her business. Good
thing she was able to join the Kapatid Mentor Me Pro-
gram Batch 2, a mentoring program organized by the
Department of Trade and Industry- Cebu and the Cebu
Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
During the KMME training, she was able to discover
various business management concepts. She found
the topic on Human Resource Management most rele-
vant to her catering business because she believes
that people who work for her can make or break her
company.
During the KMME sessions, Julia was also able to build
rapport with other mentees who became her contacts
and thus opening doors to other business opportuni-
ties.
Today, demand for her products and services remains
high. Her biggest challenge now is to find a way to
meet the increasing orders. She disclosed that building
a plant for the operation is already an urgent need. For
this reason, she applied at the Small Business Corpo-
ration (SB Corp) for a loan amounting to 10M to cover
the building construction and land acquisition.
The KMME or the Kapatid Mentor Me project is one of
the initiatives of DTI to assist micro and small entrepre-
neurs (MSEs). This project aims to enhance the capa-
bilities of MSE’ owners in running their businesses. The
Negosyo Centers have extended support to this project
by serving as field offices of DTI. They address busi-
ness queries and recommend trainings and seminars
for those interested to develop their businesses. The
centers also help in scouting for MSEs in their areas
who are interested to be part of the KMME program.
As of October 2017, there are 85 mentees in the prov-
ince of Cebu who have graduated from the KMME pro-
gram. #
Kapatid Mentor ME
IA famous quote says that “a way to a man’s heart is
through his stomach” but for this down to earth entrepre-
neur, “a way to a customer’s loyalty is through good cus-
tomer service paired with passion and love of the busi-
ness”.
Julia Carmen Hilongo, a resident of Liloan and the owner
of Perry’s cakes and pastries, started her business in
1986. In the beginning, she had her relatives and neigh-
bors as her devoted clients. Because of her delicious
baked products, Julia’s customers grew in number. It was
through word of mouth from her satisfied customers that
her business became known in Lilo-an.
But as her number of clients grew, demand for an official
receipt also became intense. It was at this time that Julia
decided to register her business name at the DTI. She
recalled submitting ten business names to the depart-
ment, but it was the name “Perry’s Cakes and Pastries”
that got approved.
In 1997, she became one of the suppliers of baked prod-
ucts to canteens in different companies in Cebu including
MEPZA, TIMEX, and NORKIS. In 2000, she started sup-
plying baked products during activities conducted by gov-
ernment agencies
Currently, the company has 15 to 20 on-call waiters and
2 hired bakers. She would hire more during peak season

In partnership with the Consumer Watch-Bohol, Inc. (CWBI) and the Bohol Youth Consumer Movement (BYCM), the Department of Trade and Industry Bohol Provincial Office celebrates consumer month in October. This year’s cele-bration carries the theme “Consumer Rights in the Digital Age”. As a kick-off activity of the month-long celebra-tion, DTI Bohol organized a Consumer 5k Fun Run 2017 on October 1. This activity aims to provide an avenue to advocate for consumer rights and responsibilities while promoting health and wellness. Consumers, students, govern-ment and private employees joined the consum-er fun run, which was open to both male and female categories. Cash prizes of P 2,000.00, P 1,500.00, and P 1,000.00, were given to the top three runners. Registration was free of charge. The first two hundred (200) participants were given free singlet.
Meanwhile, the 5th Consumer Youth Summit was held on October 5,at JJ’s Seafood Village. The summit was open to students from the universities and colleges in Tagbilaran City. Resource speakers were invited to talk about eCommerce and Anti-phishing and anti-scam laws. A Seminar on Product Standards Regulation and Con-formance wwas also held on October 13. This activity was meant to update local business hardware and con-struction companies and establishments on the latest product standards department administrative orders and importation laws and regulations. A culminating activity of this year’s Consumer Month celebration was the Consumer Quiz Bowl which was held on October 26 at the ICM Activity Center. The contest was open to all secondary students from public high schools in the province. Winners received cash prizes of P 2,000.00, P 1,500.00, and P 1,000.00, re-spectively. #

Tamarong Lamayo and Tilapia Lamayo of VITI-
BOFA (Villareal, Tinago Boyco, Fishermen’s Asso-
ciation) reached the Negros Oriental market with
the help of Negosyo Center business counsellors of
Bayawan City Jay Carl Simon and Merissa Jean
Evangelio.
Negosyo Center Bayawan conducted a market
matching last October 19, 2017 in Dumaguete City
inviting food establishments including Hotel Essen-
cia, Bethel Guest house, and Food Net among oth-
ers.
Lamayo is a style of fish preparation where the fish
is marinated in herbs and spices, then partially sun-
dried and vacuum packed, ready for delivery and
purchase. It is not as salty and as dry as the
more popular “bulad”.
VITIBOFA does Lamayo for Tamarong and Ti-
lapia regularly but also does the same for other
seasonal types of fish. They dry the fish using
the Shared Service Facility that was given to
the LGU which includes a solar dryer. Just last
month, they went on a series of meetings with
the LGU and DTI Negosyo Center discussing
on their organizational challenges and how to
overcome them.
The market matching was a time for them to get
back in the game and hopefully this will be the
start of their group’s success.

Kapatid Mentor ME
“Love at first bite” – is the business tagline that Mrs. Ma. Cecilia Samonte hopes to communicate to her customers when she started her Shawarma food business. Mrs. Samonte is a resident of Tagbilaran City. She is a mother of four and is happily married to her husband who is an engineer. When she was young, her mother used to own a sari-sari store which she attended to in her spare time. This ignit-ed her interest in managing her own business. On October 2016, Cecilia along with her sister es-tablished the business Flechaszo Wrap Food House. Their first mobile stall is located within the heart of the city inside the Tagbilaran City Square. A few months later, Mrs. Samonte took over the man-agement of their business. However, like many oth-er business start-ups, her venture was not smooth sailing. After a week of operation, they received a lot of negative feedbacks from their customers such as: their tortilla wrap being hard that the customers had to set it aside and only eat the contents. Other cus-tomers complained that spoiled cheese was acci-dentally added as ingredient. Taking these as a pri-ority concern, she decided to close the business for three days in order to check on the lapses and find ways to improve their product. Moreover, they have to quickly get rid of the tortilla wrap they were using at that time due to its poor quality and shortened shelf life as a result of long transport time from the supplier. These experiences led her to conduct a study on how to improve the quality of her product and the operation of her business. Talk about perfect timing, Mrs. Samonte was select-ed as one of the pioneering 26 MSMEs of the Kapa-tid Mentor ME Program in Bohol, a mentoring pro-gram organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in partnership with the Bohol Cham-ber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the Phil-ippine Center for Entrepreneurship – Go Negosyo (PCE). Although Cecilia was pregnant during the course of the training, she regularly attended all sessions in order not to miss valuable inputs from the mentors. Also, because of the KMME program, she made a vow to herself to never stop learning and work seri-
ously on improving her knowledge in managing her business. After her graduation from the program, she was eager to apply what she had learned. Mrs. Samonte started by identifying her target market and equipping her personnel. She also assigned specific persons to handle the different areas of her business operations, changing her previous micro-management style. Being confident enough with her current set-up, she now turned towards improving her marketing strategies. She started by entering into short-term contracts with schools to allow her to display on a mobile stall inside the school premises during special events. Surprisingly, she was able to capture a bigger market and report good sales. She sees a growing demand for her products. With her de-sire to “strike while the iron is still hot”, she was able to build another branch in front of a universi-ty in the city. This is now operating and providing her new and repeat customers. Presently, she is developing a new product which she plans to introduce to the market soon. With these positive developments, Mrs. Samonte is grateful for the support she got from DTI through its Kapatid Mentor Me Program. Her experience with other mentees also served as her motivation to continue to move forward and inspire more people, according to her “I was real-ly touched by how great their faith was in the Lord and how this reflects on their businesses.” Truly, hardwork with a right dose of faith, and support from the right people can lead a neo-phyte entrepreneur to her first bite to success.#

Seminars. The seminars were held at Baclayon National High Schoo and at Lonoy Heroes Memorial High School. One hundred and sixty (160) senior high school students participated the seminars. Mr. Miguel C. Abuyabor, Ms. Mary Lou P. Torreon, and Ms. Mer-
cedes J. Matalines facilitated the conduct of the Consumer Education Seminars. They presented the R.A. 7394 otherwise known as " The Consumer Act of the Philippines", 8 Basic Consumer Rights, 5 Consumer Responsibilities, and Fair Trade Laws.

Tanday, Brgy. San Juan Buenaventura, Brgy. Taguihon and Brgy. Dacitam with NC Bohol BOSS Counsellor Claire Apale. These trainings are supported by DSWD-SLP as part of their convergence strategy to devel-op the entrepreneurial skills of poor households by providing them with opportunities to enhance their access to basic social services and standard of living. A total of 83 participants attended the activity.

Negosyo Center Mabinay reaches out to
MSMEs. The business counsellor, Belben King,
gathered MSMEs in the area last October 19,
2017 and presented the services available at
the center which included business registration,
BMBE registration, trainings, consultancies and
more!
On the sidelines, a financial management expert
visited and discussed the financial pyramid, how
to know your net worth and key financial well-
ness topics.
The Negosyo Center was launched last Septem-
ber 21 with the support of the Mabinay Business
Club and Mabinay LGU. It has a training room
and this is the first time it was used. More train-
ings and meetings will be held here as it is also
shared to the Mabinay Business Club. Partner-
ships are forged well and we are looking at a
bright tfuture for Mabinay microbusinesses.

Philippines’ finest products were on display as the country participated at the World Food And Beverage Great EXpo (FABEX) Kansai 2017 happening from 11-13 October 2017 at the International Exhibition Center (Intex) Osaka. FABEX Kansai is Japan's largest general trade fair for commercial food, cooking ingredients, equipment, and containers. Organized by the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry, through its Export Market-ing Bureau (EMB), the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC)-Osaka, and the Philippine Department of Agriculture-Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Ser-vice (DA-AMAS), the country's delegation showcased an array of food products, food supplements, food machinery and various kinds of farm produce at the three-day event. According to DTI-EMB Assistant Director Ag-nes Legaspi, who lead the business delegation from Manila, the delegation composed of 18 Filipino companies also visited Tokyo to meet with Japanese importers. This business mis-sion was meant to promote the Philippines as a reliable supplier of high quality food prod-
ucts. “Japan is among our top trading partner and we want to maximize their keen interest on doing business with the Philippines by increasing our promotion efforts of our products and services,” said DTI-EMB Assistant Director Legaspi. In addition to the Philippine exhibition in FABEX Kansai 2017, government officials who were also part of the del-egation in a seminar entitled “Philippine Seminar on Business Opportunities on Agriculture and Logistics” or-ganized by the Osaka Port Promotion Association.♦
