Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate

Great IT benefits

Multiple deployment options. Virtual machines,

both pooled and personal collections, and Remote

Desktop (formerly Terminal Server) sessions are all

managed, deployed, and configured from the

same console.

Centralized administration console. IT has a

single view to centrally administer and manage

groups of servers and roles, and to manage virtual

desktop and session collections.

Scenario-based deployments. Server Manager

provides access to new deployment wizards that

make it easier to deploy your desired scenario.

Both VDI and sessions are supported, and all

required services are automatically installed and

configured.

Centralized publishing. Publish and manage

RemoteApp programs, session-based desktops,

and virtual desktops from a central console.

Display a historic view of resource assignments,

change published resources, and edit properties

of a published resource.

Intelligent VDI patching. Administrators can

control when and how pooled virtual desktop

images are updated to reduce disruption. Personal

virtual machines automatically balance patching

loads to prevent a sudden increase in load on the

host server.

Flexible storage options. Virtual desktops can be

located on direct attached storage, SAN, or SMB-

based network locations, reducing overall storage

costs.

Fair share of session resources. Policies can be

enabled to automatically manage the allocation of

CPU, network, and disk resources to prevent one

resource-intensive session from affecting the

performance of other users on the same session

host.

Robust user experience

Unified remote experience. All features are

available for both sessions and virtual machines to

provide a consistent user experience.

RemoteFX network improvements. Protocol

improvements provide a high-fidelity remote

experience, even on low-bandwidth and high-

latency connections. Dynamic auto detection

adjusts the remote experience based on network

conditions.

RemoteFX USB redirection. A wide variety of

USB devices, including printers, scanners,

webcams, voice over IP headsets, and more can be

plugged in locally and made available in remote

desktop sessions and virtual desktops.

Easy user personalization. User disks allow users

to preserve user personalization settings across

session collections and pooled virtual desktop

collections—even for settings not stored in a user

profile. This feature is available for both sessions

and virtual machines

Rich graphical experience. The user experience

delivers accelerated, 3-D graphics and support for

multi-touch and gestures in the remote session,

for both virtual machines and remote desktop

sessions.

Simpler logons. Users can provide their

credentials just once to obtain authentication to

any RemoteApp programs or virtual desktops.

Metro-style remote desktop application. New

in Windows 2012 RC, a touch-first application that

provides convenient, fast, and fluid access to

remote resources from all Windows 8 client

platforms. Users can access the virtual machines

and RemoteApp programs assigned to them by

logging on with an email address and password.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, powered by Windows Server 2012 Release

Candidate Remote Desktop Services

Windows Server 2012 RC Remote Desktop Services provides a unified administrative experience for

configuring and managing virtual desktops, remote desktop sessions, and RemoteApp programs. In addition

to the deployment and configuration improvements for administrators, Remote Desktop Services also

benefits remote users with enhanced remote graphics and video experience, broad device support, and

preserved personalization settings.
