    SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

KEY TO SYMBOLSFor your own safety, read through the usermanual carefully and do not start the ma-chine before you have understood every-thing. Do not let persons who have not readthe manual, use the machine.

Risk of cut injuries. Use protective gloves whenyou handle knives and circular sawblades. Itis particularly important to wear gloves whenopening or tightening the knives' locking

screws (the tool can easily slip).Use approved ear protectors. Hearing canbe damaged by just short exposures to highfrequency noise. Use approved protectiveeyewear. Splinters and wood pieces can bethrown out with great force during processing.

Warning for cutting tools. Never place yourhands or tools above or below the planingtable or in the the shavings ejector when inoperation.

This symbol means 'WARNING!'. Pay par-ticular attention where this symbol appearsin the manual text.

A warning comes after this symbol. Pay par-ticular attention where this symbol appearsin the manual text.

WARNING! The planer can cause serious bodyinjuries where incorrectly operated. Make

sure you are therefore fully concentrated onthe operation of the unit and are very carefulwhen you use the machine.

Never stand in the path of a board. The boardcan be thrown backwards and out of the machine.Branches, splinters or pieces of metal can also bethrown out at great speed. Always stand beside thein-feed table.

Only one work piece at a time is to be fedthrough the machine.

Make sure that the machine is set so that the feederrollers (5*) grip the workpiece. Do not feed in work-

pieces which are so conical that there is a risk thatthe feeder rollers can lose their grip. Never placeyour hands or tools above or below the table whenthe machine is running.

Before the machine is started: Check that the cutter can rotate freely and that

no tools or loose components have been left inthe machine.

Check that the cover is properly closed andthat the covers two locking screws have beentightened

Check that all knobs, bolts, nuts, stops, shavingsguides, cutters, knives, circular sawblade protec-tive covers, in-feed and out-feed tables etc. areproperly tightened, that the shavings hoses aretted and that the chip extractor is switched on.

'Shut off the power' means that the cable withthe CCE contact, which supplies the machine withpower, is disconnected from the machine and isplaced in such a way that no unauthorised personscan re-connect it. The cable is to also be placed sothat there is no risk that it can be treaded upon ortripped over.

Shut off the power by pulling out the contact andwaiting until the cutter has stopped: before you open the cover to replace knives,

replace circular sawblade, clean or carry out other work on the unit, above

or below the surface of the table. before you replace belts or carry out other serv-

ice or cleaning work. before the machine is moved. if the machine is to be left unattended.

The shavings hose and chip extractor are to be con-nected to the shavings ducts and are to be securelyfastened such as by using hose clips.

Do not wear loosely hanging clothes or anythingelse which can get caught up in the machine's mov-ing parts. Fasten long hair up in a secure (and nice)way.

Never use the machine under poor visibility condi-tions. Always work under good lighting.Do not use the machine if you are under the inu-ence of alcohol or other narcotics or medicines.

SAFE DISTANCESNo-one other than the operator is to bepresent within 3 metres of the sides of themachine or 6 m from the out-feed side whenin operation. There is to be a wall or other

barrier on the in-feed side, which stops anythrown-out materials. The wall or barrier is tobe maximum 8m from the machine, but ide-ally closer if short work pieces are processed.Set up a form of cordoning which preventspersons unintentionally entering the risk areabetween the machine and the barrier on thein-feed side.

Keep the workplace clean and tidy. Do not placeanything on the ground which you can later tripover. Never place your hands or any tools on the planingtable when the machine is running.

Do not climb onto the machine.

Do not tread on the machine's electric cable.

Make sure that the machine is positioned in sucha way that access to the emergency stop is notblocked.

For greatest electrical safety, use a residual currentdevice .

The machine is not to be modied and is not to beadded to. Only use original parts supplied by Logosolwhich are designed for the purpose. After service, the machine should be in its original condition.

The machine's warning markings are there for yourown and other's safety. Damaged or illegible labelsare to be replaced.

Blunt circular sawblades or knives increase the risk ofaccidents.

    WARNING! Risk of rebound.

The minimum permitted workpiece length:300 mm. Make sure that you are familiar withall functions and settings options before youbegin using the machine.

External environment: The motors and the electri-cal system can be damaged if the machine is stored

or is used at temperatures below zero degrees Cor if it is stored in damp unheated environments.Water can condense and collect in the motors andthe electrical system's housing, i.e. the control panel(this applies to most sealed motors). There is a drainplug on each motor which can be removed to checkthat the motor is dry inside. Also check that waterhas not collected in the control panel. This checkshould be carried out regularly where there is a riskof condensation.

    DESCRIPTION OF MACHINE

    REQUIRED TOOLS

The SH410 Solo planer/moulder is a wood dimen-sioning machine which can process two sides of aworkpiece or, in some cases, three sides.

The machine is designed around a solid rack and aplane table of steel plate. The table is suspended inthe rack by twin parallel stays, which allow the tableto be safely raised and lowered using a lever.

The workpiece is fed horizontally onto the planetable and through the machine by two feeder roll-ers. The feeder rollers are spring mounted and ttedto the rack. The workpiece is steered laterally by anadjustable stop and a sprung press roller.

Pieces are processed by a cutter and a circular saw-blade. The cutter and the circular sawblade counterrotate and are driven by a powerful electric motorwhich transfers drive by a poly-v-belt transmission.

The cutter and feeder rollers are covered by a re-tractable protective hood. A safety switch preventsthe machine from being started if the hood is notlocked.

The machine is tted with throw-out protection onthe in-feed side.

    Siting

Check the Solo planer/moulder on receipt. Anytransport damage is to be immediatelyreported to the transport company.

Most of the planer is rust protected and thereforecan withstand being placed in cold spaces. Addition-al maintenance in the form of the lubrication of thecomponents without rust protection is howeverrequired. Refer to the 'Maintenance' and 'lubricationpoints' sections. There is to be an open space below the ma-

chine, so that shavings cannot collect around

the motor. Also screw the planer into placethrough the holes in the rack's underside. Make sure that there is sufcient unrestricted

space for the longest boards which are to beplaned on the in-feed and out-feed side andthat there is space for service and wood storage.

Hang planer electrical cables from the roof orprotect them in other ways. Never tread on thecable. The machine should be connected via aresidual current device.

Make sure that there is very good lighting. Thereis to be good general lighting. Also set up a

powerful lamp right above the machine. Makesure that there is no risk of being blinded by thelight.

    TIP!

Make a tool board for the tools you need and set it up alongside the planer, so that you can easily see it. Look at tool board before you start the ma-chine to check whether any tools are missing. Theycould have been left in the machine!

    SHAVINGS HANDLING

The Solo planer/moulder is to be connected to a chipextractor which has a capacity of minimum 1000m3 /h. Logosol has a very suitable 240V 2-phase,1.5kW fan.

The re risk and dust emissions (releases) associatedwith shavings collection must be taken into consid-eration.

WARNING! Fire risk and dust emissions ass-ociated with shavings handling.

Contact the local authorities for advice on theregulations which apply in your area.

Connect the shavings hose and attach it, usinghose clamps, to both the planer and the chip ex-tractor. Use Flexislang from Logosol (L:3m, part.no: 7000-000-1015) which has a smooth insideand which improves ow.

If you want to transport the shavings across alonger distance:Use the shortest hoses possible andtransport the shavings in sheet steel pipes whichgenerate less resistance to air ow.

The shavings duct on the cover can be un-screwed, removed and turned so that hose con-nection is to the right or left.

Position the chip extractor so that its switch iseasily accessible.

In-feed and out-feed tableLogosol can supply in-feed and out-feed tables. Youcan also build your own in-feed and out-feed tableyourself. It is very important that the in-feed table, planer table and out-feed table are precisely in-line,so that the cutter does not leave marks on the endsof the workpieces.

CUTTER WITH PLANING KNIVES, MOULDING KNIVES & SAWBLADE

Make sure that the power is fully disconnectedand that the cutter is not rotating before youopen the cover to service or replace knives.Use protective gloves, particularly whenloosening screws which are tight or whentightening screws (refer to 'Safety regula-tions'). Watch out for the planing knives. It isvery easy to cut yourself on these, even whenlightly touched.

A short wedge is available as an accessory for the

installing moulding knives. The moulding knives'projection is set by adjusting the planing knives'removal rate. Short wedges for moulding kniveswhich are adjustable in the height direction, are alsoavailable.

After replacement of moulding knives, planingknives or circular sawblade:

Check that no tools have been left inthe machine.

Check that the cutter can rotate freely whenthe cover has been closed. This is checked, when power has been disconnected, byrotating the pulley on the motor. You reachthe underside of the pulley by extending yourhand under the belt's protective plate.

Panel planer thickness is set using the plane tablecrank, (6). The thickness that has been set can beread on the scale on the machine rack. The scalecan be calibrated. Loosen the stop screw under the

scale and turn to the correct position. Run a boardthrough and measure using a calliper. Then adjusttenths and hundredths using the scale on the crank.Shavings thickness up to 8 mm.

WARNING! Bluntness increases the risk of anaccidents.

    PLANING KNIVES

Refer to the section 'Cutting using planingknives, moulding knives and circular sawblade'

Planing knives which are in the machine are set, i.e.set for use on delivery. The knives must however beregularly ground to ensure that the machine func-tions well.

DISMANTLINGLoosen the locking screws (B) and press the shavingsbreaker down (A). Screw up the planing knife usingthe adjustment screws (C).

GRINDINGAlways ground the knives in pairs so that they havethe same width, min 15 mm. Vibrations can other-wise arise in the cutter. The grounding angle is to be40 degrees.

ASSEMBLYThe knives, shavings breaker and cutter are to becleaned carefully before knives are tted. Retractthe shavings breaker down into the track. Place theplaning knife straight in relation to the adjustmentscrews, so that the adjustment screw heads are inthe recess in the side of the knife and screw theknife down using the adjustment screws.

The knife's locking screws are in the shavingsbreaker.

Undo the locking screws in the shavings breaker, toallow the knife height to then be adjusted. Whenadjustment has been completed, the locking screwsare tightened a little at a time until all are fully tight-ened.

Rough setting of height : Set the height of theknife using the adjustment screws, so that the rearedge of the knife is in line with the cutter body.

Fine tuning : Guide the adjustment block (part.no.7500-000-1020) laterally over the cutter. The knifeshould just graze the block when passing over theknife, when the right height is set. Use this methodto measure on both sides and in the middle of theknife.

    Knife locking screws

    Adjustment screws for height

    Knife locking screws

Insert a ground 10 mm spanner to loosen or lock theknife.

Adjust the height of the knife using the set-ting block. The knife, when correctly set, just

grazes the block along its entire length, whenthe block passes laterally over the cutter.

Tighten the shavings breaker's locking screwsfully when adjustment has been completed. Finally, screw the adjustment screws carefullydown, until they are tight. The knife will crackif these are tightened too hard.

    MOULDING KNIVES

Guide the wedgewith mouldingknife into the

    widening in thecutter's side.

WARNING! Cutter imbalance creates vibra-tions which can damage the machine andcause personal injury.

Moulding knives must always be tted in pairs,so that the cutter remains well balanced.

ASSEMBLY: Assemble wedge (D) and moulding knife (E). Guide the wedge and moulding knife down the

side of the cutter where the wedge groove isexpanded.

Push the knife and wedge into the track and at-tach through screwing out the screw on the rearof the wedge.

The locking screw is not to be above thegroove of the wedge track.

Measure the knife's lateral position and t anidentical knife exactly on the cutter's oppositeside.

    REPLACING CIRCULAR SAWBLADE

DISMANTLING:Remove the protective cover for the belt transmis-sion and the rear protective cover for the chaintransmission.

Loosen the belt tensioner and bend the belt off thespindle pulleys.

Remove the saw spindle through loosening the twostop screws on each ball bearing inner ring. Thespindle can now be pushed out towards the pulley.Push out the spindle one decimetre. The four screwson the blade centre can now be loosened and theblade can be replaced.

ASSEMBLY:Clean the bearing and spindle carefully. Fitthe circular sawblade onto the spindle.

Only circular sawblades supplied by Logosol are to

    be used.

    MAINTENANCE

WARNING! Risk of serious damage if main-tenance is neglected.

The Solo planer is easy to maintain. Required main-tenance is specied below.

Make sure that all power has been discon-nected from the machine before you open thecover or dismantle protective covers.

A good procedure is to ensure that compressed airis available to blast the machine clean each timeyou open the cover. The entire machine should becleaned of resin and shavings at the end of eachworking day. Take extra care with the feeder rollers'sprung bearings, the feeder rollers, the out-feed roll-ers and the cutter. Use alcohol as solvent. Check forbelt stretching (under the protective cover). Checkalso that cables, connectors and contacts are ingood condition.

Shavings can be packed under the feederroller's and the out-feeder roller's sprungbearings (4 pcs) which impairs feeding andincreases the risk of rebound.

Check that the teeth of the rebound protec-tion are clean and fall under their own weight.

Make sure that the following components are welllubricated. Use the appropriate Superow (part.no.9999-000-5115). Feeder roller bearings. Lower the table to the

lowest position. The chain which drives the feeder rollers (under

the protective cover). When you use the machine, regularly clean the tableand treat with low viscosity oil, such as parafn oil.

Regularly check that the motor compartment hasnot been lled with shavings. This can otherwiselead to inadequate motor cooling.

If the machine is not used for a longer periodof time: All power is to be disconnected and the ma-

chine is to be thoroughly cleaned. Repair any damage to paint; wash with alcohol,

scrape off rust and ll the damage with auto-motive paint. This is to prevent creeping rustwhich can increase the damage.

Then coat the table surface and the compo-nents specied above with universal oil (part.no.9999-000-5105).

Also coat the moulding knives, planing knivesand circular sawblade with oil. The machineshould ideally be stored in a heated space. If thisis not possible, make sure that the machine iscarefully covered and not in direct contact withthe ground.

    16/24

    16

    FEED

The feeder rollers are driven by a separate motorand chain transmission.

The feeder rollers must be kept clean of resin andshavings to ensure they function well. Use Snickar-rent (part.no. 7500-001-5000).

The feeder rollers are spring mounted and tted inthe rack. You can experiment by re-setting the feedpressure using the nuts under the rollers which thesprings are against.

The rollers are to balance directly above theworkpiece.

If a narrow workpiece is processed and the springsare equally tensioned on the right and left side, thenthe the feeder rollers can tilt, which gives poorerresults.

Note the basic setting before you begin to adjust, sothat you can easily return to the original settings ifincorrect. The springs are normally tightened harderon the circular sawblade side, particularly if narrowworkpieces are to be planed. To check roller pres-sure: Disconnect the power, lower the table, placea workpiece under the cutter, raise the table so thatthe feeder roller is pressed up. Both sides of thefeeder roller are to then be sprung upwards equally.

    FOUR FUNCTIONS

DIMENSION PLANING:Set stop (A) to the requiredwidth using the scale on the topof the planer and lock using thelocking wheel. When dimensionplaning, it is the right scale and the left tip on thedouble gauge which shows the width of the board.Adjust the sprung stop (B) so that the workingpressure presses against the stop and lock using thelocking wheel. Set the table to the required boardthickness using the table lever and the scale. Lockusing both locking knobs. Also adjust the height of

the in-feed and out-feed table. Loosen the lockingknob on the machine's sides, adjust using the leveron the left side. Tighten the locking knob again.

RIP SAWING:Set the stop (A) to the requiredwidth using the scale and lock us-ing the locking wheel. Adjust thesprung stop (B) so that the work-ing pressure presses against the stop and lock usingthe locking wheel. Set the table to the same heightas the working piece using the table lever and lockusing both locking knobs. If several identical latheor moulding workpieces are to be produced, thenthe stop and the sprung counterhold should beswitched around. The left scale will then correspondto the right point on the double gauge.

PLANING:Loosen the the allen head boltsin the circular sawblade's lockingsleeve and move it to the countersinks in the shaftby the side of the table.

MOULDING:Dimension planing of mouldingworkpieces to suitable measure-ments. Then t the moulding knivesand the locking heals to the cutter. Loosen the topcover/the shavings duct on the cover and set (alter-natively remove completely) the adjustable shavingsbreaker. Test run and adjust the moulding knives ifrequired.

Always check that the cutter can rotate freelyand that no tool or loose screws are left in themachine.

PLANING TIPS! If you have a board which has been very poorly

sawed or if you for any other reason want to re-move a lot of wood, set the planer so that it onlytakes away as much as it is capable of removing.Run the board through the planer several timesuntil you can set the correct dimension.

Try to avoid timber that is too crooked. It will notbecome any straighter because you have planed it.

Dimension plane a board and measure its exactwidth. Then calibrate the double gauge on thestop, against this. Loosen the screw which holdsthe gauge on the side of the table, ne tuneand tighten.

When you have nished planing a mouldingwhich you know you will plane again, feed ina ca 1m long board and shut off the machinewhen the end is just in front of the table edge.Lower the table and take out the board. Next

time the moulding is to be set, the board can beused as a template for both cutter and stop.

If the knives in the top cutter are set out toomuch, the last feeder roller does not grip. Theprojection is to be 1 mm.

If a lot of wood of the same dimension is to beplaned, a stop can be set on the in-feed table,so that you quickly can direct in the boards inthe lateral direction before you feed them intothe machine. Logosol has magnetic stops which

attach to the in-feed table. (An alternative canbe to draw a mark on the table, if you have acrooked work piece.)

    GOOD TO KNOW

WHICH STEEL QUALITY FOR WHICHPLANING?VS, Tool steel also called carbon steel. Hardenedthrough heating and cooling. TS is used when onlya smaller amount is to be planed. It is cheap but canbegin to loose sharpness already after around 300running metres. It is the heat which is generatedwhen planing which makes the knife blunt. TS canwithstand 300 degrees before it is damaged . Thecheap steels which can be found in catalogues andat ironmongers is TS and can not be compared withHSS.

HSS, High speed steel or cobalt steel. This is thesteel quality we recommend in most cases. It isaround twice as expensive as TS, but remains sharpfor around 2000 metres, which is a much betternancial solution in the long term. HSS withstands700 degrees without being damaged .

HM , Hard metal, also called cormant, is the mostwear resistant steel quality. The hardness of the hardmetal makes the knife as brittle as glass. It is there-fore not possible to ground the edge to an angle

that is as sharp as HSS and TS, which means thatit does not cut as well in some materials. HM costs8-10 times more than TS, but remains sharp forup to 6000 running metres. HM withstands 1000degrees without being damaged . Keep in mind thatHM steel must be handled carefully so that it doesnot crack. Always place the cutter on a soft surface.

Some special cases: Pine: Use HSS or tool steel.HM gives a poorer surface. MDF board: Only useHM. Hardwood: TS cannot be used for planing hard-wood. Use ideally also a 4-insert cutter.

THE CUTTERThe Solo planer is supplied with HSS planing knivesin the cutter. These are also available in HM. Aboveand below the cutter, holders can also be tted forreplaceable thinner steel, so called Reversible knivesof HSS or HM.

Moulding knives can be tted in the cutter withthe planing knives, which means that the machineplanes and moulds in one operation. There is a largerange of 40 mm moulding knives which can becombined to achieve the required moulding.Special steel can be ordered from Logosol. Also

these can be combined to be able to produce moremouldings using just a few moulding knives.

MOULDING PLANING AND STRAIGHTPLANINGA moulding planer, such as SH230, is not to be usedto straighten broads. It is to only be used to dimen-sion and mould work pieces. The machine's process-ing part is to therefore to be built as short as pos-sible, to avoid the straightening effect. Panels andmouldings are normally not straightened.

A jointer/planer makes the workpiece's sides straightbut does not dimension. A jointer/planer is to havea long table which steers the work piece straightover the cutter. The board must then be run througha planer, dimension planer or moulding planer toachieve the correct width and height measurements.Normally only shorter pieces are straightened, forexample for joinery or window production.

These two planer types are not to be confused. Theyhave separate functions, each being important.

WOODWood shrinks when it dries. The largest shrinkagetakes place when the wood dries from 25% humid-ity to 10%. To achieve a good surface, you shouldnot plane wood which has higher humidity than20% and is as dry as wood can be through outdoordrying. Ideally the wood is to also be stored indoorsbefore it is planed.

Wood shrinks very little along the board, along thebres. You do not, in most cases, need to take thisinto consideration . Wood shrinks along annual ringsby around 8% and across annual rings by around5%. Vertical annual rings are also better in boards.

Boards warp and crack over time. In most cases, thewood should be turned so that the heartwood sideis the visible surface, to avoid problems with thewood to the greatest extent possible.

If you are using lock panel, the top boards should beturned with the heartwood side outwards and theinner boards with the heartwood side inwards, toachieve a wall that is as tight as possible.

RESULTHard materials provide better surfaces than soft.Small depressions and light small ames affect the

shavings which accumulate around the edge andis pressed down into the wood. This phenomenaincreases when the steel loses sharpness.

Noticeable cutter impacts in the planed wood areusually due either to the knives not being adjustedto the same height or that the workpiece is notpressed hard enough against the table or stop dur-ing processing. A feed speed that is far too high canalso can give visible cutter impact.

Keep feeder rollers clean of shavings. The out-feed

roller is particularly important, as shavings whichstick to this otherwise can make marks on theplaned surface.

Boards that are too warped and crooked, should bestraightened in a jointer/planer or dimension planedbefore nal processing is carried out.

    SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR MOULDING KNIVES

Some of the above mouldings are, when processed, completely undamaged where the cutter cuts through thewood piece.

Applies to all moulding knives which havelarger moulding depths than 12 mm

WARNING! When these knives are used, therisks increase signicantly. Be therefore par-ticularly careful and attentive.

Life threatening! Risk that moulding kniveshit the table during operation. Steel fragmentscan be thrown out of the machine.

Check that the cutter can rotate. Moulding

knives easily touch the plastic insert in thetable, but not more than that the cutter canbe turned by hand.

WARNING! Remove the setting crank fromthe machine after setting.

Replace the plastic insert in the table ifdamage or scores of more than 1 mm arefound.

Life threatening! High risk that planed woodmouldings are thrown out of the machine.

Respect the safe distances. Set up thecordoning specied on page 5. Never standin front of the in-feed side when in operation.Make sure that no children are in the vicinity .

Before SH410 is started with these mould-ing knives: Check that the cutter can rotatefreely and read the machine's safety instruc-tions.
