EssenceEnMS is a set of systems and processes to improve energy performance of enterprises

ArchitectureEnMS is Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDAC) framework, as for all ISO standards, providing a systematic approach for enterprises to set & achieve targets and plans for energy performance improvement

Essence and Architecture

Page 4: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Set of interrelated or interacting elements to establish an energy policy and energy objectives, and processes and procedures to achieve those objectives.

Purpose of ISO-50001 is to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption.

Note: ISO-50001does not lay down minimum absolute performance but leaves with the organization to decide. It stresses on management of continual improvement.

EnMS as defined by ISO-50001

O: Organize (Cl. 4.1 to 4.3) (Assuming commitment from top MGMT) Formulate Energy Policy Appoint MGMT Rep (MR) Constitute Energy MGMT Team Allocate resources Finalize scope & boundary of EnMS P: Plan (Cl. 4.4) Finalize energy planning process Identify legal & other requirements Develop Energy Review highlighting significant energy use and

list of improvement opportunities Determine energy baseline and identify appropriate EnPIs Finalize energy objectives and targets consistent with energy policy

and its business conditions Finalize Energy Management Action Plan s for achieving objectives

and targets

I: Implement (Cl. 4.5) Build capacity and competence through training & awareness

programs and communication policy Describe and document the core elements of the EnMS and their

interaction Identify O&M activities related to SEUs so that these are carried out

under specified conditions Set criteria for effective O&M activities for SEUs and put them in place Set energy performance criteria for design and procurement activities

E: Evaluate/Check (Cl. 4.6) Systems for Monitoring, Measuring and analyzing energy uses and key

characteristics of operations to include EMIS, M&T and savings M&V Compliance with legal and other requirements Internal audit of the EnMS

M: Management Review (Cl. 4.7)

Engage an EnMS consultant with defined and scalable scope of work

Decide Boundary and Scope of EnMS Appoint Management Representative

(MR) Organize Energy Team Formulate Energy Policy Identify individuals whose activities

influence energy use and consumption

Step1: Organize to Kickstart

Page 11: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Management Representative (MR) can be an existing employee in fairly senior level to handle MR job as additional responsibility.

Or he can be a new recruit having requisite competence to handle the job. He can be a full time/part time contract employee with adequate authority over functional areas.

Energy Team (ET), to be headed by MR, shall have persons form all functional areas.

About MR and ET

Page 12: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Essential Points to be covered in Energy Policy

The Business/Industry of the organization

The commitment of the top management for continual improvement in EnMS and energy performance

Commitment of the organization for specific % improvement in energy consumption over a specified period

Commitment of the organization to allocate resources to achieve objectives/targets

About Energy Policy

Page 13: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Approved Energy Manual can reduce decision making process and help to achieve continual improvement in energy performance & EnMS. The Energy Manual may include:- Scope & Boundaries of EnMS Energy Team and its functions and authority Energy Policy Guidance on planning process Guidance on training and awareness programs Core Elements of EnMS Key Documents in EnMS Any other procedural matter as necessary

Energy Manual(Not mandated by ISO-50001yet helpful tool)

Page 14: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Develop & document energy planning process

Identify legal & other requirements Develop & record Energy Review Establish Energy Baseline Identify EnPIs Establish energy objectives and

targets Establish EM action plans

Step2: Plan to steer ahead

Page 15: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Review the organization’s activities and identify

people affecting energy performance & consumption Define methodology for energy review Review availability of monitoring & control systems List out the data to be collected for energy review Define the forms & formats of data Identify the sources of data, when & wherefrom Lay down a method to check the accuracy of data Plan to receive & store the data for later analysis Check functioning of above process Check if anything missing

Following data are generally required Area and details of Facility/Plant Building Utility Billing Data Utility Interval Data Utility Tariff & Rules Production Figures Process Flow Chart Operating Schedules Monitoring and control systems Rated Power(KW/HP) of major equipment Measured Data with portable instruments for individual

systems/equipment/process Financial Data

Energy Review Typical Data

Page 17: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

SEU List (All consumption to be in same units)Item Percentage of Total Consumption

Boilers --- % Process Motors ---% Air Compressors ---% Chillers/AHUs ---% Lighting ---% Others ---%As O&M personnel can affect SEUs, list them as well as the factors that can influence the SEUsNote:-SEU Listing is iterative process starting from using rated power & operating hours data. Then it is refined through energy balancing exercise by using the portable power meters to measure power and to correct figures.Energy Baseline is determined from above data

Energy Review Significant Energy Uses(SEUs)

Page 18: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

General Criteria for Prioritizing Amount of annual savings in energy

cost Amount of investment required Payback of EM Measures Time required for implementation Impact on safety, health or

environment

Criteria may be weighted to arrive at final priority

Energy ReviewListing Improvement Opportunities

Page 19: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Baseline can be monthly or yearly The data in Energy Review used for

baseline Improvement in energy performance, if

any are assessed with reference to baseline

Adjustment to baseline may have to be done to normalize against variation in influencers

Energy Baseline

Page 20: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Typical EnPIs % Energy Conversion Efficiency (Output/Input) KWh per SM area per year for facility building KWh or MBTU per Ton of production/year for plant KW per100CFM of Air Compressor or Fan/Blower KCal or BTU per Ton steam for Boiler KCal or BTU per Ton/Kg of material for furnace KWh per KL or gallons for pumps KWh per unit output for process motorsFor comparative purpose, ENPIs need to be normalized for factors like weather, operating hours, working conditions

EnPIs (EnPIs for individual systems & whole Facilty/Plant)

Objective: Reduce energy consumption in Facility-1 (Based on prioritized list of opportunities in ER) Target No.1: Reduce lighting energy by-- Target No.2: Reduce HVAC energy by -- Target No.3: reduce Equipment energy by – Note: The objectives can emanate not only

from the prioritized list in ER but also from Energy policy and Legal/other requirements

Use of renewable energy can also be included in the objectives and targets which have to be specific with reference to timeframe

Essential Requirement of

Continual Improvement

in EnMS and Energy performance

is demonstrated by ensuring to incorporate:- Proper Measurement and monitoring

Systems Proper Documentation Management

Why Go For ISO-50001 Implementation?Because

It targets the bottom line directly by cutting operational costs and improving profitability.

It helps to maintain competitiveness. It Demonstrates your sustainability

leadership as being environment conscious in reducing GHG emissions and retarding climate change as well as being natural resources conscious.

The Business Case

Page 25: En ms for enterprises venture-lab

Why Focus on EnMS?

Because Energy saved by EM is the cleanest and cheapest source of

energy leads to reduced costs increasing

profitability requires no clearances requires no additional transmission lines attracts no public resistance and

controversy.Insight

Energy Efficiency is the low hanging fruit. Pluck it
