events.

Generic Structure Recount is categorized into two differences:

a. Personal recount

who were involved in the story, when, and where)

tell what happened in a chronological order)

comments of the writer/speaker about the experience)

-orientation [optional] (the conclusion of the experience)

b. Factual recount

Language Features The use of nouns and pronouns

(e.g: David, he, his)

The use of action verbs

Dear Venni,

Hi Venni! How are you? I hope you are fine. Sorry that I am late to

reply your last letter. You know that we are here just having the

worse moment in our life. The earthquake has made us going crazy.

You know about the earthquake, right? Do you know what it is like

when it happens? Well, I’ll tell you about this terrific moment.

I was driving along the coast road when the car suddenly lurched to

one side.

You know what happened? At first I thought a tire had gone flat but

then I saw telegraph poles collapsing like matchsticks. It’s terrible,

isn’t it?

Next, guess what! The rocks came tumbling across the road and I

had to get out of the car.

When I got bock to town, well as I said, there wasn’t much left.

My God, that was a nightmare. I hope it will never happen again in

our life.

So, this is my experience, Ven. How about you? Did something

happen? I can’t wait for your next letter.

What kind of recount is it? It is

Picasso was one of the most outstanding and important artists of the

1900’s. He is best known for his paintings. Almost every style in

modern art is represented in Picasso’s works.

Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain as the son of an art

teacher. He studied painting with his father and also in Madrid.

From about 1895 to 1901 he painted realistic works in a traditional

style. Then he entered what was called the Blue Period. During this

time he only used shades of blue in his paintings to show poverty he

saw in Barcelona.

After 1907, he entered into the style of cubism. Among his well-

known cubist paintings are “The Three Musicians” and “The man

with a guitar” which depict the destruction of a Spanish town.

Picasso died in France in 1973.

I had the great honor of being able to call Kevyn Aucoin, my friend.

He was not only a magnificent artist, but more important, a

magnificent human being. My older sister, Liza Minnelli, introduced

us in 1991. We instantly hit it off.

Kevyn did make-up for photo shoots with my sister and for the 1993

Tony Awards. But I will always remember the day we spent together

in my bathroom. Kevyn taught me how to do my own make-up. He

told me to stop plucking my eyebrows every five minutes and, as we

we were finishing, he made a list of what he used. I asked him to say

“No”, but he said he’d love to and off we went. By 6.30 p.m., we

had shopped our brains out and laughed so much that we were

exhausted. I got into a cab and kissed him good-bye.

Over the years, I’d also buy Allure every month to read his column.

His work has truly made make-up as important as fashion.

Spending time with Kevyn was like being hugged. He was an angel

and all of us who knew were lucky.

The simple past indicates that an activity or situation, began and

ended at a particular time in the past.

Past Progressive/Continuous

Pattern:

(+) S+was/were+Ving

I was walking down the street when it began to rain

(-) S+was/were+not+Ving

I was not walking down the street when it began to rain

(?) Was/were+S+Ving

Was I walking down the street when it began to rain?

The actions occurred at the same time, but one action began earlier

and was in progress when the other action occurred.

1st: I was walking

2nd

: It began to rain.

Past Perfect

Pattern:

(+) S+had+V3

Sam had already left by the time Ann got there.

(-) S+had+not++V3

Sam had not left by the time Ann got there

The past perfect expresses an activity that was completed before

another activity or time in the past.

The simple past may be used as:

Sam left before Ann got there

If either before or after is used in the sentence, the past perfect is

often not necessary because the time relationship is already clear.
