Two dead after
new superbug
outbreak at ERI
AN investigation was under
way today after two people
died following an outbreak of
Clostridium difficile at Edin-
burgh Royal Infirmary.
Fourteen other people sus-
pected to have the superbug
are in isolation at the hospital.
The latest “cluster” of cases
comes despite experts being
parachuted in to drive down
rising infection rates in the Lo-
thians. Hospital bosses stressed
that the two patients had died
from underlying conditions.

Unesco in warning over city world
heritage siteEDINBURGH’S world heritage site has been thrown into crisis after Unesco admitted it had “deeply worrying” concerns over new developments in the city.
Officials have told the UK Government of their “strong concern” about the level of protection for the Old and New towns after being lobbied about a string of controversial projects.
The world heritage body has intervened after a team of international advisers warned them of a “significant threat” from new developments. Projects singled out include controversial schemes already approved, including the St James Centre overhaul and the New Waverley development. full story – Pages 4-5
