    National foreword

This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the TechnicalSector Board for Building and Civil Engineering. It is the English languageversion of EN 196-7:1989 Methods of testing cement; Methods of taking andpreparing samples of cement, published by the European Committee forStandardization (CEN). EN 196-7 was drawn up by Technical Committee 51,Cement and building limes, as Part 7 of a series on testing cement which wasaccepted by CEN on 3 October 1989. The UK gave a positive vote at the finalvoting stage and, thus, the European test procedure has been introduced intothe 1991 revisions of British Standards for cement BS 12, BS 146, BS 4027,BS 4246, BS 6588 and BS 6610. This British Standard supersedes BS 4550-1which is withdrawn. The European Standard includes important definitions relating to the varioustypes of samples associated with the assessment of the quality of cements andprovides details of how these samples are required to be taken. The European Standard also covers the preparation and storage of laboratory

samples for subsequent testing. Representative samples for the various testswhich may be required are obtained by means of a sample divider or byquartering.A suitable form for the sampling report specified in clause 10 is given in nationalannex NA.Since the draft European Prestandard for cement, ENV 197-1, does not deal withacceptance inspection at delivery, EN 196-7 does not specify the relationshipbetween sample size/type and the size of the lot sampled. In consequence nationalannex NB retains the UK conditions relating to acceptance inspection.National annex NC gives the committees responsible for the UK participation inthe preparation of this standard.National annex ND gives details of corresponding British Standards for

international standards referred to in the European Standard.A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of acontract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunityfrom legal obligations.

1 Object and field of application

This European Standard describes only theequipment to be used, the methods to be followedand the provisions to be complied with for takingsamples of cement representative of given lots fortesting to assess the quality of products prior to,during or after delivery. The provisions of this standard are only applicablewhen samples of cement are requested for verifyingthe compliance of either:

    a) current production of a cement at any timewith a standard (for example to meet the needs ofthe manufacturers auto-control or again inresponse to the requirements of a certification

procedure); orb) a delivery or a lot with a standard, theprovisions of a contract or the specification in anorder.

The standard is applicable to the taking of samplesof all types of cements1) defined by EN 1972)whether they are:

    a) contained in silos;b) contained in bags, canisters, drums or anyother packages;c) transported in bulk in road vehicles, railwaywagons, ships, etc.

For the purpose of this European Standard, thefollowing definitions apply.3.1order

quantity of cement covered by a single requisitionplaced with the same manufacturer (or distributiondepot). It may consist of one or more consignmentsspread over a period of time

    3.2consignment

quantity of cement delivered at a given time by amanufacturer (or distribution depot). It may consist

    of one or more lots3.3lot

quantity of cement produced under conditionspresumed uniform. After specified tests (mainly byEN 1972) this quantity is regarded as a wholecomplying or not complying with standards orcontract requirements

    3.4increment

quantity of cement taken in a single operation of thesampling equipment used

    3.5sample (general term)

quantity of cement taken at random, or inaccordance with a sampling plan, from a largerquantity (silo, stock of bags, wagons, trucks, etc.) orfrom a fixed lot, relating to the intended tests. Asample may consist of one or more increments

    3.6spot sample

sample taken at the same time and from one and thesame place, relating to the intended tests. It can be

obtained by combining one or more immediatelyconsecutive increments

    3.7composite sample

homogeneous mixture ofspot samples taken:a) at different points orb) at different times

from a larger mass of the same cement, obtained bythoroughly mixing the combined spot samples and,if necessary, reducing the size of the resultingmixture

    3.8laboratory sample

sample prepared by thoroughly mixing and ifnecessary reducing from a larger sample (spot orcomposite sample) and intended for use by thelaboratories undertaking the tests. Theselaboratories are generally those of the producer, those designated in the order or in the certificationregulations

    3.9sample for retest

sample which is to be kept for possible subsequenttests in the event of the results from tests carriedout on the laboratory samples being in doubt or

disputed. The sample for retest is generally theremainder of a laboratory sample after a first seriesof tests

    3.10retained sample

sample taken systematically from regular deliveries(for example for large works), if necessary in thepresence of all the parties concerned, to be retainedfor possible testing in the event of doubt or disputeor subsequent problemsNOTE Definitions 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.10 only have meaning inthe case of checks made when taking delivery of a supply.

    4 General

4.1 The aim of the sampling operations is to obtainfrom a large quantity of cement (contained in a silo,a stock of bags in a warehouse, truck, etc., or in adefined lot) one or more smaller quantities, considered by the parties concerned to represent thequantity of cement of which the quality is to beassessed.4.2 The equipment used, methods followed, andprecautions taken may vary according to the natureof the installation and the circumstances in whichthe samples are taken.4.3 In the case of the checks carried out within thecontext of a certification procedure the measuresother than those described below to ensure that thesamples are representative are within thejurisdiction of the certification body (see clause 7).4.4 In the case of taking delivery of a supply, thesampling operations shall, in principle, take place inthe presence of the manufacturer (or vendor) andthe customer (or purchaser) or their respectiverepresentatives. The absence of one of them shallnot, however, be a barrier to the operations but ifthis occurs it shall be mentioned in the sampling

    report (see clause 10).

The sample is normally taken before or duringdelivery. However, if necessary, it may be taken

after delivery but with a maximum delay of 24 h. Inthis latter case the results of the checks shall beinterpreted with care.Indeed, for various reasons, the cement to be testedmay no longer be representative of the product atthe actual moment of its delivery. For this reasonthe time of sampling shall be carefully recorded inthe sampling report (see clause 10). When samplesare taken after delivery, the requirements in thefirst paragraph above remain applicable.

    5 Sampling equipment

On account of the diversity of industrialinstallations and circumstances in which thesamples have to be taken, it is not possible todescribe one type of reference equipment with whichother types of equipment can be compared througha series of tests before being able to be used. Hence, this standard only gives, by way of example inannex A, a simplified illustration of the devicesnormally used and which have been foundsatisfactory. This equipment is either portable(ladle, tube, screw sampler, etc.) or permanentlyinstalled (screw extractor or other equipment fixedpermanently onto the container).

The equipment shall be chosen and used inaccordance with the following rules. The equipment shall be

    a) approved by all the parties;b) of non-corrodible material, which is not liableto react with the cement;c) maintained always in working order and in aclean state. Care shall be taken to ensure that itis carefully cleaned after each samplingoperation3). Care shall also be taken to ensurethat it is not contaminated by lubricants fromother equipment used.

Permanent equipment shall be installed at locationswhere there are no hard deposits and where the flowof cement is homogeneous (no segregation) at thetime it is being used. In particular, when it is usedit shall not be operated during fluidization under airpressure. If fluidization is necessary, no samplesshall be taken until the cement has settled for atleast half a minute after stopping the air supply.

    3) However, cleaning is not necessary between the taking of successive increments from the same cement which are intended formaking up the sample.

6 Procedures for taking samples andprecautions to be taken depending on

    the procedures adopted6.1 General

The most suitable equipment for the circumstancesshall be used to take a sample, observing thefollowing precautions as appropriate.

6.2 Sampling from bags, drums and containersof comparable size

When the cement is packed in bags, drums or othersmall containers, the sample indicated in the secondparagraph of8.1 shall comprise either a single bagor a single container chosen at random from a

sufficiently large stock.6.3 Sampling from large containers

Samples shall be taken while the container is beingfilled or emptied taking the precautions:

    a) not to operate in dusty or pollutingatmospheres;b) to take the number of samples necessary toobtain the quantity prescribed in the secondparagraph of8.1;c) to transfer the collected cement into a clean, dry and airtight container before proceeding withthe operations described in clause 8.

6.4 Sampling from bulk transport(after loading or before unloading)4)

For all equipment used, care shall be taken not totake material from the top or bottom layers of themass of cement. The thickness of the layer to beconsidered is at least 15 cm.Take the same precautions as those describedin 6.3a), b) and c).

6.5 Sampling while loading into bulktransport or silos

Taking samples may be carried out only if suitable

equipment is available and if there is access to ahomogeneous phase of cement. Take the sameprecautions as those described in 6.3a), b) and c).

    6.6 Sampling from silos

In the absence of a suitable fixed sampling device

(see the last paragraph of clause 5) an appropriatequantity of cement shall be discarded whendischarge commences to remove the hard deposits orunwanted mixtures of different cements in thedistribution system. This quantity is left to bedetermined by the manufacturers representativepresent at the sampling operation. The necessaryquantity prescribed in the second paragraph of8.1shall then be collected in a clean and dry container.

6.7 Sampling from bag filling machines

The quantity taken shall comprise a bag of cementobtained during the normal operation of the

machine. It can equally comprise the equivalentquantity (see the second paragraph of8.1) sampledby a mechanical device fitted in the supply hopperdirectly above the discharge spouts. If the machineis used for packing different cements, it shall becompletely purged of all the cement previouslypacked until the cement from which samples are tobe taken arrives. Depending on the type of packingmachine, the quantity so removed may beconsiderable. The manufacturers representativepresent at the sampling operation shall determinethis quantity.

7 Frequency at which samples aretaken and choice of sample type

The frequency of taking samples and the type ofsample (spot sample or composite sample) dependson the provisions contained:

in the agreements between producer andcustomer; in the national, European (ENV 1975) forexample) or even international standards; in the certification procedures.

8 Size and preparation of samples

8.1 Size of sample to be taken for verificationof compliance

Each laboratory sample (or sample for retest orretained sample) shall be of such a size that all thetests specified in the contract or required bystandards indicated in the contract or thecertification procedure can be carried out twice. Thus, unless specified to the contrary, the mass ofthese samples shall be at least 5 kg (or more, ifnecessary, to fill completely the container indicatedin 9.2).

    4) The equipment described in this standard (see annex A) does not allow for sample(s) to be taken during unloading.5)At present at the draft stage.

The total quantity (spot sample or compositesample) to be taken for verifying compliance shall be

greater than or at least equal to that required forsupplying to all the laboratories concerned thesamples indicated in the first paragraph above. Thisquantity shall be taken by the equipment specifiedin clause 5 and in accordance with the proceduresstated in clause 6. In general taking a sampleof 40 kg to 50 kg will suffice.

    8.2 Homogenization

    8.2.1 General requirements

As soon as the quantity of 40 kg to 50 kg indicatedin the second paragraph of8.1 has been collected, itshall be carefully homogenized (preferably in a

laboratory) with clean dry implements not liable toreact with the cement. The homogenization shall preferably be achievedusing a mixing machine, the efficiency of whichshall have been previously demonstrated (see 8.2.2).Whatever procedure is chosen, it shall be carried outas quickly as possible to minimize the exposure ofthe cement to the air.In the absence of a homogenizer, the followingprocedure is to be adopted:

the quantity of cement to be distributed betweenthe laboratories (see the second paragraph

of8.1) shall be tipped onto a clean dry cloth(or plastics sheet) and shall then be mixedcarefully using a shovel.

This procedure shall only be used if:a) the ambient relative humidity is lessthan 85 %;b) all risk of the sample being affected by wind, rain, snow or dust is avoided.

8.2.2 Verification of the efficiency of thehomogenizing procedure selected

Take approximately equal quantities of two cementsof differing characteristics (i.e. Blaine fineness, byEN 196-6, and additionally colour). Mix these usingone of the procedures described in 8.2.1 and note thetime between starting and finishing the operation.Once the operation is judged to be complete, takefifteen micro-samples, each of 12 g to 20 g, frompoints equally distributed within the mass of whichthe homogeneity is to be verified6).Determine the Blaine fineness three times on eachof these micro-samples.

Homogenization shall be considered to be obtainedif the analysis of variance shows there to be no

significant differences betweenthe 15 micro-samples. This analysis shall be carriedout as described in the literature dealing withstatistical control7).In the case of an unsatisfactory result, the mixingshall be repeated, but doubling the time of themixing operation. If, after this second trial, there are no significantdifferences between the 15 micro-samples, themethod with twice the homogenization time shall beconsidered valid, but, if no noticeable improvementhas been obtained in relation to the first trial, thechosen method shall be declared unsuitable. Finally, if there is no decisive improvement, it shallbe decided, in view of the time required, whether itis worth repeating the trial with a longer time.

    8.2.3 Choice of method

The verification of the efficiency of thehomogenizing method (see 8.2.2) is only to becarried out at the time of choosing the method. Thischoice is left to the initiative of the manufacturer, but he shall be in a position to prove (for example toan expert representing a customer or thecertification body) that he has carried out the trialdescribed above by presenting a dossier drawn up on

that occasion.8.3 Division of the quantity necessary forverification of compliance

After homogenization (see 8.2) of the sample madeup as specified in the second paragraph of8.1, itshall be divided into the required number oflaboratory or retained samples either by using asample divider or, after quartering the quantity tobe distributed, by extracting with a hand scoopincrements of approximately 0,5 kg from each of thequarters and transferring these successively intocontainers prepared for receiving the laboratory

(or retained) samples. This operation shall becontinued until the desired mass (stated in the firstparagraph of8.1) is obtained in each container. The sequence of distributing the contents of thehand scoop from which each laboratory sample isgradually made up shall be as follows.

    6) To obtain initial information, the colour of these micro-samples can be compared if care has previously been taken to select twocements of distinctly different colour.7) For UK purposes, a suitable method can be found in Statistical methods in research and productioneds O.L. Davies andP.L. Goldsmith, 1972, Oliver and Boyd, Edinburgh.

It is then up tothe receiving laboratory, to store, prepare and treatthe sample in a manner appropriate to itssubsequent use.8)

8.4 Foreign bodies in the sample

During the above operations any foreign bodieswhich may appear shall, in all cases, be noted in thesampling report (clause 10).If they appear to be uniformly distributed in thecement (for example, a powder other than cement, lumps) it is not possible to remove them from thesample. Otherwise, they shall be removed and kept:

    a) by one of the two parties (manufacturer,

customer) with the agreement of the other in thecase of taking delivery of a supply; orb) by the agency responsible for inspection in thecase of a sampling operation performed in thecontext of certification regulations.

    9 Packaging and storage

    9.1 Principle

The packaging of the samples and the method ofstorage shall always be such as to preserve theproperties of the sampled cement. Any conditionslikely to affect this shall be indicated.

    9.2 Containers

The samples shall be packed, despatched and storedin bags, drums, or solid containers. These shall bemade of a material which is inert with respect tocement and non-corrodible. They shall be dry, impervious (to air and moisture) and clean. In thisrespect they shall not have been previously used forpackaging products which are likely to affect thesamples.

To prevent aeration the containers shall as far aspossible, be completely filled and their closure

    sealed with adhesive tape9)

.When made of plastics, containers or bags shall onlybe used under the following conditions:

    a) the period of storage shall be limitedto 3 months;b) the sheet from which they are made shall be atleast 100 m thick;c) the plastics material shall under nocircumstances cause the cement to become airentraining whether by loss from this material oras a result of surface treatment. On this point, check for the absence of risk by carrying out

appropriate tests where needed;d) provision shall also be made to seal themwhere necessary, by using suitable tape.

    9.3 Storage condition

The samples shall preferably be stored at atemperature of less than 30 C.

    9.4 Identification of samples

In order to identify the samples unambiguously, thecontainers (bags or drums) shall be clearly andindelibly marked in at least one place. When thereis only one mark, this shall be on the body of the

container and not on the lid.Furthermore, a copy of the sampling reportdescribed in clause 10 shall be slipped wherenecessary into a protective envelope placed insidethe container.

    9.5 Authentication of samples

If necessary, when this is required by the contract ofsale or certification regulations, the container shallbear an agreed seal authenticating the sample. Thisseal shall be fixed so as to prevent the unauthorizedopening of the container.

    10 Sampling report10.1 General

A sampling report corresponding to each sampleshall be drawn up by the person responsible for theoperation. Copies shall be attached to the laboratory(or retained) samples prepared and distributed inaccordance with the clauses of the contract orcertification regulations.

8)At this point the work of the laboratory is usually specified in the test standards. (Principally EN 196-1 to EN 196-6 andEN 196-21.)9) It has to be remembered, however, that the packaging, however air-tight, cannot in the long term prevent a certain amount ofaeration, the extent of which may vary depending on the properties of the product.
