The Emergency Medical Technician Training Basic Program consists of approximately 13 weeks (170+ hours) of in-class content, discus-sion, on-line training, and workshops designed to prepare the student for the Massachusetts state-approved Practical Examination and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician written exam. The curriculum is based on the Department of Transportation Na-tional EMS Education standards. The EMT program gives the student an excellent foundation in Basic Life Support skills and techniques; patient assessment; and safe, sane transportation. The publisher’s resource provides support materials for each chapter including quiz-zes, videos, animations, case studies, virtual tours, interactive exer-cises, web links and study aids. Additional at-home and online study time required every week. Program held at the HCC Center for Health Education, 404 Jarvis Ave., Holyoke. Offered in collaboration with Springfield Technical Community College.

Program includes:

• Introduction to emergency care training and legal aspects• Airway obstruction, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest• Mechanical aids to breathing and resuscitation• Bleeding, shock, traumatic injuries, and wound care• Fractures of the upper and lower extremities

and neck and back injuries• General knowledge of the ambulance and much more• Medical emergencies and assisted medications,

behavioral and environmental emergencies• Obstetrics and gynecological, pediatric

and elderly emergencies

EMT skills include:

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic external defibrillation

• Oxygen therapy and resuscitation techniques• Patient assessment and wound care• Patient care simulations in our state-of-the-art

EMT Sim Lab providing real life assessment• Patient handling, extrication,

communications, and terrorism• Splinting and neck/back immobilization

PRE-REQUISITES

• Students must be 18 years of age.

• Copy of immunization and health records required for eligibility.

• CORI check required.

REQUIRED PRIOR TO FIRST CLASS

• Read “Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers” by the American Heart Association

• Complete free, online 3-hour course: FEMA National Incident Management Sys-tem (NIMS); ICS-100: Introduction to ICS

• Complete free, online 3-hour course: FEMA IS-700b: NIMS: An Introduction

NOTE

Upon successful completion of the course there are additional, separate, certification fees for the NREMT Practical Exam, NREMT Certifica-tion and MA Office of EMS Certification Fee.
