between the Dutch cows.
Then she organized the
gala dinner. This will be in
one of Leiden’s top loca-
tions: The Olo Rosso, a
Mediterranean restaurant
where you will get a real
exclusive dinner. Then the
dean of the LUMC will
welcome you to say good-
bye to everyone in style.
She organised the EMSA
lustrum party at the last
evening. On the next page
she will tell about this
great party herself.
To meet this enthusiastic
sweet girl, you really
should come to Leiden in
September!
I’ll present to
you: Judith
van den Bes-
selaar. She is
our secretary.
A very hard worker. She
always creates this beau-
tiful newsletter and
makes de clearest meet-
ing-notes ever. She is
also always filled with
ideas, a real idea ma-
chine. Just like this mor-
ning: out of nothing she
made up the running din-
ner. Another talent of her
is fundraising. In compari-
son with other OC mem-
bers, she has sent the
most letters to compa-
nies. She finds suitable
companies, writes the
letters, sends them and
makes sure that she
stays in touch with the
company. Besides this,
she encourages the rest
of the OC to do the same
for the fundraising. In a
few months you can have
the possibility to meet
this nice girl. Already
excited?
And do not forget Lisette
Wiltink! She created the
perfect social program!
Because of her, you will
eat in the best student
restaurants of Leiden. On
Thursday you can join the
farmer’s golf: you will use
a wooden shoe and play

The Tulip Inn Hotel Leiden Centre
The accomodation for the EMSA GA is the Tulip Inn Hotel. The hotel is only five minutes away from both the train station and the hospital, by foot. You can see them from your room! Every morning we will have
breakfast from seven till eight thirty.
Breakfast will
include several kinds of bread and
other warm products. You will share
your room with four other partici-
pants. A wake-up call will be provided by
the hotel. During breakfast, one of the
OC members will be there to answer all
of your questions and to help you to
arrange everything you need.
Please don't forget, there will be other
guests at the hotel too, so we cannot be
too loud in the halls. For that, we have
the parties! :D

Dutch word of the month:
“Lekker!”
Another problem is that we are
used to eating a lot of meat. To
produce 1 kilo meat, 3-7 kilo of
cereals are needed. These ce-
reals could be fine food for
humans, so this means a great
spoil of products! Meat produc-
tion also needs a lot of energy
and causes a disbalance be-
tween production and use of
animal manure, both having a
negative influence on the envi-
ronment.
Of course you’re wondering
what you can do yourself. The
next things are a good start:
use locale (no transport) and
seasonal (no greenhouses)
products, eat a little less meat
and try to purchase your food
more efficiently, so you’ll waste
much less!
EMSCon will have a delicious
start with a fair dinner! This is
not just a meal, but a complete
meal that would be available
every day for every person in
the world with current food
production.
This moment still 790 million
people are chronically mal-
nourished. Of course the world
population is growing, but food
production has been growing
at the same rate and the earth
could produce food for even
two times the world popula-
tion. So the problem must be
an unfair distribution.
Of course an obvious reason
for this unfair distribution is
poverty. But this is not the only
reason. The more developed
countries are protecting their
own economy by high import
rates, and they have grants for
farmers in their own countries
so that they can sell at a lower
price and thus will have a bet-
ter position on the world mar-
ket. These reasons make that
the developing countries have
almost no export opportunities.
Of course they can sell their
products in their own coun-
tries. Unfortunately this is not
as easy as it sounds either.
The reason for this is that the
overproduction from developed
countries is sold in developing
countries at a very low price.
To compete with this, farmers
in developing counties would
have to sell at rates that are so
low that they would not even
level the costs.
EMSCon Update: Starting Sunday—Fair Dinner
You are very lucky to read this newsletter if
you did not attend the NCM, because we will
tell you the theme of the best party of the
year in this particular part. The party takes
place on the last night of the GA. It is the
twentieth b-day party of EMSA! So it cer-
tainly deserves a perfect theme with peo-
ple dressed all like the theme. So do not
forget your orange stuff,
because the theme is: THE PARTY WHERE YOU WEAR
ORANGE AND WE DON’T. Be as creative as possible; color
your hair, paint your face, make yourself as much orange
as you can. We’re looking forward to see the orange
you!!!
