Partnership for Safe Poultry in Kenya (PSPK)

OVERVIEW

• March 2009-March 2011

• Active in 9 districts across Kenya

• PSPK leverages the time & expertise of

international and East African regional

volunteers to provide technical assistance

to poultry sector stakeholders

Program Objectives

• Promote improved bio-security

practices to reduce the threat of

Highly Pathogenic Avian

Influenze (HPAI) and other

poultry diseases

• Increase the competitiveness of

Kenyan eggs and poultry meat

• Increase income for Kenyan

rural smallholder poultry

producers

3

PSPK

4

• Provides economic incentives for

smallholder poultry producers to

adopt bio-security measures

• Targets producers in major

poultry-producing parts of the

country

• Could easily be applied across

the region, along the larger bird

migration corridors

The PSPK Approach

• Bringing together poultry sector stakeholders for

collaboration, information sharing, and outreach

• Conducting analyses to identify stakeholders,

constraints, and opportunities

• Strengthening local capacity

• Introducing simple, low-cost

bio-security measures

• Creating linkages

• Leveraging volunteers

Stakeholder Collaboration & Outreach

• Stakeholder

consultations

• Workshops

• Kenya Poultry Sector

Knowledge System (www.kenyapoultry.org)

Poultry Sector Analyses

• Stakeholder inventory

• Value chain analyses,

including assessment of feed

testing facilities

• Targeted studies on sector

competitiveness issues

• These analyses have shown:

Growing consumer preference –indigenous poultry meat & eggs,

white meat

Need for branding

Opportunity to aggregate production

Need for quality standards & improved management

systems/practices

Smallholder Linkages to Markets,

Market Information, Inputs, Finance

• Aggregating production to

access inputs

• Innovative financing model

• Linkages to finance

institutions

• Partnerships with

buyers/traders

Trade Level

• Trained 6 traders on biosecurity (Transportation

processing & marketing) and consumer safety

concerns

• Develop brand for each trader and link to

supermarket supply

• Train 44 live bird market traders from Nairobi & its

environs on risk of live bird handling and consumer

safety concerns

• Encourage supply linkage between processors and

live bird market traders to reduce live bird market

risks10

Innovative Elements

• Dual focus on smallholder production/incomes and

measures to address threats from the avian

influenza pandemic

• Highly targeted to specific aspects of the poultry

sector

• Establishment of partnerships of key players along

the value chain including partnership with traders

– Avoids duplication of efforts/reduced costs

– Leverages on partners’ resources to maximize impact

Opportunities for Replication/ Regional Expansion

• Replicate value chain analyses and stakeholder

inventories across other East African countries

• Invite regional stakeholders to participate in regional

workshops & study tours

• Enable regional stakeholders to access information

on the Kenya Poultry Sector Knowledge System

• Facilitate cross visits & field days for other farmers,

traders, and input providers

12

Lessons learned: improving sector competitiveness

• Lower mortality/higher productivity on farm level

resulting in higher revenues for farmers

• Improved logistics for trading partners because of

farmers grouping (reduced transaction costs) and

trader contracting resulting in lower costs for

commercial partners

• Incentives of the premium for local/indigenous

chicken are being passed on to farmers resulting in

higher revenues for farmers
