Spatial Placement

Brightsandz Technologies conducted an assessment of the premises of Mrs. Priyanka Banerjee

residing at Flat no 8, DDA SFS Apartments, Pocket 1, Sector 9, Dwarka, New Delhi 110075. The DDA

pocket 1/sector 9 apartment are low rise apartments (G+3) situated at the northern corner of Sector

9 in Dwarka on the corner side of the Mall road and Road number 224. Pocket 1, DDA Sector 9 has

two tower clusters on the North East direction across the Mall Road on top of Polka bakery. There

is another tower in the East at 400 metres across the Mall road behind the Shiksha Bharti school.

The fourth tower is behind the Prashanthi Dham Sai temple at 1 km distance from the pocket.

The location of Mrs. Priyanka Banerjee’s house is facing the Polka telecommunication tower

clusters on the north east side at approximately 150 meters, and the 2nd mobile telecommunication

tower at a distance of approximately 400 metres on the south east direction behind Shiksha Bharti

School. The 3rd floor location and the 4th floor terrace location of Mrs. Priyanka Banerjee’s house is

in the primary lobe of the antenna EMR throw (high EMR instance). The EMR throw and the

intensity of incident radiation is highest in the primary lobe of the radiating tower. Please refer to

the illustration below to elaborate the primary lobe.

Devices Used

We have used hand held digital Dossimeter (Cornet 78DS) to monitor and assess the radiation

microwaves ranging from 100MHz to 8GHz. This includes Radio Frequency from GSM/3G at

900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz; CDMA 800MHz; LTE 2300MHz(on trials) and WiFi/WLAN/

Bluetooth frequency bands.

For Appliance EMF measurements, we have used hand held analogue Gaussimeter (Trifield 100XE)

which measures electrical and magnetic fields.

What standards are we following?

Indian government, DoT and TRAI has adopted standards specified by ICNIRP guidelines for cell

tower radiation. The ICNIRP guidelines refer to the radiating intensity (EMR radiating from the

tower) which is different from the incident intensity (EMR incident on the individual).

The major shortcoming of the ICNIRP standard is that it protects against short term gross heating

effects. It doesnot take into account significant biological effects such as oxidative stresses leading

to cancer and cell damage from long term microwave radiation exposure. This is the reason why

most of the advanced economies have adopted much more stringent radiation norms than those

proposed by ICNIRP.

Brightsandz follows a far more stringent standard laid out by the BioInitiative report 2007 – which

suggest 1 milliWatt/sq. metre outdoor exposure and .1 milliWatt/sq. metre in home exposure. Thus

the standards that we follow are as follows

Incident Radiation/ EMR Categorization

~.1 mW/sq.m Very Safe

.5-1 mW/sq.m Safe

Greater than 1 mW/sq.m Risk

Significantly greater than 1 mW/sq.m Very High Risk

Resident Profile

We find that there are 2 members in the family – Mrs. Priyanka Banerjee and her husband – both

of them are in the age group of 35-45 years.

We don’t see any high risk profile member in the family – Infant, 60+ adult or any person with

medical condition.

EMR: Readings & Summary of Observations

The radiation measurement are summarized in Table 1. We had switched of the home mains to

reduce the interference from domestic electric and electronic appliances.

Sl.no Location Maximum radiation in milliWatt/sq. metre

Remarks

1.

Ground Floor – Outside the garage

2 mW/sq.m and above This open area is in the tertiary lobe of the radiation footprint of the tower cluster above Polka bakery.

2. Open corridor area outside the main entrance

11 – 16 mW/sq.m This is a very high amount of radiation to be consistently exposed. Primary lobe exposure is very high.

3. Living Room window (with mesh and glass panes open)

8 - 12 mW/sq.m Your living room has unhealthy amounts of exposure to EMR radiating from the Polka bakery tower clusters

4. Living Room window (with mesh panel open)

5-6 mW/sq.m We see risk zone in this part of the house. EMR radiation are is higher than admissible; consistent and continuous exposure could lead to negative biological effects.

5. Living Room (With dual glass and mesh panels closed)

.2- .5 mW/sq.m Mesh Window is instrumental in screening a lot of radiation.

6. Living Room (Near Centre Table with windows closed)

1.3 mW/sq.m Moderate level of exposure. However if the mesh panels are left open the incident intensity increases manifold

Sl.no Location Maximum radiation in milliWatt/sq. metre

Remarks

7. Living Room ( Near 3 seater Sofa) – Mesh Panel closed Mesh Panel Open

2 – 4 mW/sq.m 6 – 9 mW/sq.m

High risk. These measurements are with the mesh windows closed Unhealthy levels of exposure

8. Living Room (On far corner single seater sofa)

~ 2 mW/sq.m High risk.

9. Living Room (dinning area) 1.5 – 2.3 mW/sq.m Unhealthy exposure leading to high risk.

10. Living Room (Beside the chest of drawers)

1 – 1.2 mW/sq.m Close to average exposure. Consistent exposures to be avoided.

11. Master Bedroom (Bed Head Left)

.3 - .5 mW/sq.m Safe

12. Master Bedroom (Bed Head – Right)

.7 mW/sq.m Safe

13. Master Bedroom (By the showcase)

.5 – .7 mW/sq.m Safe

14 Master Bedroom (By the corner shoe rack)

.5 mW/sq.m Safe.

15. 2nd Bedroom (Balcony Exit) 1 – 1.8 mW/sq.m Moderate to high EMR detected.

16. 2nd Bedroom (Bed Head) .6 – 1.3 mW/sq.m Left side is .6 (Safe) Right side is 1.3 (Moderate risk) Second bedroom is irradiated by the 2nd mobile tower behind Shiksha Bharti school. Since the distance is comparatively longer, the intensity is lower

17. 2nd Bedroom (Balcony) ~ 3 mW/sq.m High Risk. This area is prone to radiation incident from the Polka cluster of towers as well as the South Eastern tower). However at the time of measurement, the reading was more controlled as compared to the drawing room. Distance between the tower and the balcony is ~400 metres. Hence the incidence is controlled. However radiation is still high in this area.

18. 2nd Bedroom (By the Computer table)

.2 mW/sq.m Very Safe

19. Kitchen 4 corners .02 - .12 mW/sq.m Very Safe

Sl.no Location Maximum radiation in milliWatt/sq. metre

Remarks

20. Roof (facing the Polka tower)

8 – 10 mW/sq.m As with the open corridor, the open space on the roof as very high levels of incident radiation.

21. Roof (Other end bordering the wall) (Mid roof)

2.4- 2.5 mW/sq.m 3 – 3.4 mW/sq.m

High. Readings are consistent with the high instance of EMR incidence in the open areas facing the Polka tower cluster.

22. Roof Room/ Studio (By the Window)

1.2 – 2 mW/sq.m Distance between the south east tower and studio windows is around 400 metres. There is a possibility that point of incidence is in the secondary or tertiary lobe of the radiation footprint from south east tower.

23. Roof Room / Studio (By the Wall Cabinet)

~ 1 mW/sq.m Moderate Risk

24. Roof Room / Studio (By the Cupboard)

1.2 – 1.5 mW/sq.m Moderate Risk

25. Roof Room / Studio (By the entrance door)

.12 - .17 mW/sq.m Safe

We were not able to measure the bathrooms, but given the axial placements in the tower, we

assume that the EMR incidence will not be high.

EMR: Home Mapping

To give a better representation of the readings, we categorized them under 4 heads – giving them

colours to indicate the safety specification.

Basis the readings, the following is the “heat map” of EMR incident on your residence is provided

below.

Conclusions from the EMR assessment of your home and living premises

1. EMR as a factor has a high correlation with occupancy. Higher occupancy of the building

will mean a higher demand on the nearby telecommunication tower. In order to serve the

demand spikes, the tower will radiate at higher outputs – leading to higher radiation

incidences. Therefore, radiation intensity could be higher in the evening as compared to

afternoons. We have taken the readings at around 12PM on a working day.

2. Our readings from the ground floor (car parking) – show that the tower is beaming at higher

than average power.

3. Your residence is in the primary lobe of the tower cluster on top of Polka bakery.

4. It is important to understand that tower loads peak in the evenings around 9 PM – 11 PM

because of a lot of voice and data usage. We have visited your housing complex at a less

than average load factor demand. It is likely that the EMR incidences would increase in the

evenings. This could lead to higher exposures in the evening.

5. We have recorded extreme high levels of EMR exposure in the open corridor/ gated area of

your flat.

6. The drawing room window facing the tower cluster at Polka bakery recorded very high

levels of EMR. We suggest preventive measures such as glass films and EMR protective

window curtains.

7. Your main bedroom including the bed head-sides are relatively safe.

8. Your 2nd bed room overlooks the 2nd telecommunication tower (located behind Shiksha

Bharti School). Since the distance between your residence and this tower is around 400

metres, the radiation intensity is lower. However some parts of your 2nd bedroom facing the

tower have high exposures thereof.

9. Your roof open area is also exposed to very high levels of radiation.

10. Your roof room has moderate to high exposure to radiation from the Polka bakery tower

clusters as well as some radiation from the South East tower.

11. We would advise window curtains and glass films on your window panes for the roof room.

EMF assessment

We also assessed the EMF from your domestic appliances. EMF is a natural by product of all

systems. The larger the electricity requirement of your appliance, the higher is it EMF signature (eg

AC, Invertor, Stabilizer). Magnetic fields are harmful but EMF incidences reduce with increasing

distance. Some other appliances such as Hair dryers, Shavers or Trimmers are used at close

proximity with the body – and even while their EMF signature is low, it harms the body because of

the proximity of use.

The placement of the domestic appliances in your home plan is indicated by the blue squares. We

assessed the same by the use of an analogue Trifield 100XE Gaussimeter.

The American Environment Protection Agency recommends EMF exposures no higher than 2-2.5

milliGauss on a continuous basis as a limit for human beings. We have used the following indices

for your EMF measurement.

Borderline Moderately higher than 2.5mG

Unsafe Extremely higher than 2.5mG

Safe Within 2.5mG

Devices

Summary Remark

WiFi Within Safe Limits

Invertor High Risk

Invertor EMF signature is 3mG at 1 metre distance. This is

outside the EPA specified safety limits for human exposure.

Air Conditioner Master Bedroom Within Safe Limits

Air Conditioner 2nd Bedroom Within Safe Limits

Even if the air conditioner in the 2nd bedroom is 7-8 years old,

it has a low EMF signature.

Fuse Box (Drawing Room)

Cell Phone Charger Within Safe Limits

iPhone 5S High Risk

EMF signature of iPhone 5S (2 years old) is very high. We

suggest changing the handset.

Computer UPS Within Safe Limits

Microwave Oven

Exhaust Fan (Kitchen) High Risk

The Kitchen Fan is old and it has a high EMF signature at 1m

distance.

RO Plant High Risk

The RO also has a high EMF signature. Since the RO and the

Exhaust fan are situated close to each other, the EMF at the

kitchen sink when both appliances are operational is higher

than the mandated sfaety standards

AC stabilizer (Main bedroom) High Risk

There is a high exposure to EMF from the AC stabilizer in the

bedroom. While it is not strong enough for the RHS headside

of the bed, it can be harmful for the long hours iron table

operation

AC stabilizer (2nd bedroom) Within Safe Limits

Refridgerator Within Safe Limits

Closure Remarks

Basis our observations and readings, the following are the findings

1. The combined measured radiation levels are very high in your gated space corridor outside

your main door and drawing room sitting area.

2. Your open space in terrace also has a high EMR exposure.

3. Your first bedroom is EMR safe – but your second bedroom and the roof room are perceived

as moderate risk areas. We would advise you to avoid these rooms for sleeping.

4. Your Kitchen has a high EMF rating – from the Microwave oven, the Exhaust fan and the

wall mounted RO. We suggest you change the exhaust fan.

5. Basis the limited measurements of your society premises, we find certain areas of DDA Sec

1, Pocket 9 to have high exposures to EMR from the Polka cluster telecommunication

towers.

6. Your current bedroom is safe from EMF and EMR.

7. We would advise you to change your iPhone 5S because it has a high EMF exposure.

8. We would advise you to keep the window mesh panel of your drawing room windows

closed. The metal lattice serves in reducing EMR in your drawing room.

Suggested Solutions

For your drawing room we suggest that you use window films and EMR shielding curtains to

reduce the intensity of EMR in your house. This will help reduce and limit the EMR outages that

you are exposed to currently.

You can get in touch with us for procuring the same for you.
