Role of woman in Georgian society
About 20 per cent of the Georgian population has migrated in search of work over the last decade. Migration causes gender and age imbalances and a loss of many of the country’s most active citizens.
• 1998 year Georgia started implementation of the action plan and international commitments regarding general equality
• Established a commission for working out the development policy for women
• Establishment of the advisory council for gender equality at the parliament of Georgia
• In 2006 there was adopted law on gender equality in Georgia

The data of the last four parliamentary elections: Women’s participation at all levels of elections in Georgia is diminishing.
• Until recently there was no woman minister in the Government of Georgia.
• As a result of the recent changes, a woman was appointed as a Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance.
• In every ministry a deputy minister is a woman.
• The Deputy Chair of the Parliament and the Chair of the Security Council are women.
• Out of the 141 employees of the president’s administration 80 are women, out of the 324 employees of the chancellery of the government 136 are women.
• According to the data of the Ministry of Justice 140 judges were women, whereas 144 were men in 2007.
Successful Steps
• Creating of gender equality mechanism at the executive branch of the government
• Supporting its operation from the state budget funding is still an issue, emphasized by the international organizations, as well as CEDAW Committee
