Letter from the CEOOctober 2019

As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, we can be proud of the numerous partnerships and collaborations we have formed with fellow nonprofits and companies alike to continue providing exceptional programs to children and adults with disabilities.

In the past year, Laradon has partnered with the State of Colorado to successfully open the new Calabrese Youth Center. This new center is a 10-bed Residential Childcare Facility that is unique to Colorado with a specific focus on youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Many of these children are returning home to Colorado after being placed in out of state institutions. Our goal is to equip our residents with the tools, skills, and behaviors needed so that they may return to a home-like community setting.

Another community partner we’re incredibly proud to associate with is developer Gorman and Company, who will be opening the Elisabetta, a 91 unit affordable housing complex, on Laradon’s West Campus in late 2019. This housing complex will be open to any and all community members that qualify for affordable housing based on income levels. Laradon’s Adult Day Programs will move to the first floor of this complex in a newly upgraded space, designed for optimized learning and safety. As we are leasing the land to Gorman, this supplies us with a non-Medicaid revenue stream to further support Laradon in fulfilling its mission.

As we continue to utilize our 10-acre campus as a springboard for partnerships and successfully expand our programming, we’re excited to welcome Sewall Child Development Center on board. Together, we have opened an inclusive preschool for children aged 3-5 in the fall of 2019. Partners like this provide more opportunities for children and adults to more fully participate in their local communities, live more independently, and enjoy greater work success. Our mission and growth is driven by what is important to the children and adults we serve, and how we can equip them so that they can fulfill their dreams.

It is a beautiful mission, and I invite you to join us on this important journey.

Douglas W. McNeill, CEO

“The Play and Learn Groups really helped Ian learn to share his toys and take turns with other kids.”

Laradon supports families through its Family, Infant, and Toddler (FIT) Early Intervention Program. Highly skilled therapists meet families in the home to provide resources, tools, and tactics to encourage growth and facilitate learning.

Meet Perla & IanPerla Manquero learned about Laradon’s Family, Infant, and Toddler Program when Ian, her son, was a year and a half old. They spent most of their days at home, and she was beginning to see signs of behavioral issues like refusing to share toys with others. She wanted to try the FIT Program’s Play and Learn Groups to connect with her community and give him opportunities to socialize with other kids.

She found that the groups not only helped her son, they helped her as well. “I got to socialize with other parents, and found out some of my friends were

already going to the groups too!” said Perla. After attending for a few years, the lead position for these groups, the Family Navigator, opened. With her past experience as a pre-school teacher, Perla felt she would be a good fit.

Perla now leads the group and continues the work of the Family Navigator at Laradon by hosting Play and Learn Groups and connecting families to low-cost resources in the community (like Splash Parks). She noticed many of the parents in attendance talked to her about their mental health and the need to de-stress. Perla addressed this issue by forming a parental support group that meets after the Play and Learn Groups once a month with a volunteer from Denver Children’s Advocacy Center. They talk through problems and discuss solutions in a safe, comfortable environment.

At three years old, Ian is ready to go to pre-school now, in part because of the Play and Learn Groups. Perla also has her eyes on the future in hopes of opening a second Play and Learn Group so they can serve even more families.

The Laradon School is a top resource to school districts, special education programs, and families looking for behavioral intervention and individualized attention in the Rocky Mountain Region.

Meet LeviLevi began attending The Laradon School in 2014, due to its ability to provide superior, individualized services to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a diagnosis of Autism and Speech Language Disorder, Levi had finally landed at the right school where his potential could be reached.

Levi communicates with others using an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device (AAC) - a device the size of an iPad that displays a series of pictures and articulates words when the pictures are selected. His dedicated speech pathologists and support staff implemented a unique teaching method to help develop Levi’s skills with this device. His AAC device has allowed him to advocate for himself, express interest in his environment, and most importantly socialize in a way he couldn’t before. He is often spotted making jokes or funny comments with staff or peers on his AAC device, and is now able to share his big, humorous, lovable personality with the world.

One place where he has truly excelled is in The Laradon School’s new art room. The calming environment is a safe space for Levi to work on his paintings and practice using his AAC device to communicate his needs to staff, like asking for paper and paint. Laradon’s Director of Fine Arts, Charlie Mead, aims to use art as a way to encourage learning and reinforce lessons being taught in the classroom.

The Laradon School recently went under major construction through Laradon’s Capital Campaign in order to make significant improvements. “The new art room is amazing. We didn’t have nearly as much room for art supplies in our old room,” said Charlie. Levi’s art will be featured in the new affordable housing complex being built on Laradon’s West Campus.

Laradon opened the Calabrese Youth Center (CYC) on its North Campus in February of 2019. It is a 24 hour program dedicated to providing residential and behavioral services to Colorado youth with intensive needs who have been placed in facilities or hospitals out of state and often away from family and resources. The State of Colorado awarded Laradon with the opportunity to open this child care facility—the first of its kind in the state with an exclusive focus on youth with developmental disabilities.

Meet Rose 16-year-old Rose was the very first student in Laradon’s brand new program, the Calabrese Youth Center, which opened in February of 2019. If the Calabrese Youth Center had not opened when it did, she would have been sent to an out-of-state institution, leaving behind the many connections and relationships she had made in her community. Rose has been in foster care since she was five years old and has dealt with a lot of change and inconsistency in her life. Her contact with family is limited, which is why the relationships she had established over the past few years at a local church in Aurora are so important to her and essential to her success.

Since arriving at the Calabrese Youth Center, Rose’s team has been working with her on communicating her needs verbally instead of expressing them through aggressive outbursts. Her staff has noticed that over time, she more often tells a staff person when she needs something or wants space, instead of defaulting to a behavior.

“What I really love about the Calabrese Youth Center is our one to one ratio of staff to residents, which ensures that individual needs and goals are being met,” said Tina Franco, CYC Case Manager.

Although she wants to be adopted by a family someday, the Calabrese Youth Center is currently able to provide her with stability and access to important community connections.

By understanding an individual’s interests and abilities, Laradon is able to provide personalized support to adults with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities. Laradon Adult Day programs help individuals develop goals to teach them new skills, promote independence, and be a part of the life of the community.

Meet GinaGina has an active personality, and frequently enjoys exploring and trying new things. She recently transitioned to Laradon’s Community Participation programs after spending six years in Laradon’s Adult Day Programs.

Laradon staff had concerns about her moving to a more mobile program like Community Participation, where individuals go on recreational or volunteer outings every day. Laradon’s Adult Programs move at a slower pace, and provide more options for stationary activities. Despite a decline in her health and physical mobility, Gina still wanted to try, and has loved her new program ever since.

“I like to go out in the community and volunteer,” said Gina. “I like walking around and talking to new people.” Laradon’s programs follow a “Person-Centered Thinking” model that encourages staff to consider what is important to and for an individual based on their wants and needs. While her staff regularly has to remind her to slow down for her safety, both programs were happy to give Gina the opportunity to make her own choices, and it turned out to be a great fit!

Employment and volunteer opportunities can bring meaning and purpose to one’s life – not to mention the opportunity to earn a paycheck. Laradon’s Employment Programs help people find meaningful work opportunities in individual or group settings and support them with job skills, training, and on-site job coaching.

Meet KatieKatie began working at the Denver Zoo nearly four years ago at the Brown Bear restaurant as a busser through Laradon’s Employment Programs. Since then, she’s worked her way up to “the line” - meaning she works behind the counter using the cash register and taking drink orders. “I like that I get to talk to people,” said Katie, “It helps me feel more comfortable having conversations.” Katie is a hard worker full of energy and ambition – she loves to attend gym classes, volunteer, and make her own jewelry.

Katie’s dream is to one day open her own flower shop. She has taken several steps towards reaching this goal like attending a six-week floral design class earlier this year that helped her learn the ins and outs of the industry. She even had the opportunity to help design floral arrangements for a co-worker’s wedding. She’s hoping to take this knowledge and the job skills she’s gained from her current employer to find a job at a local flower shop where she can continue to learn. “I like working with flowers, and I love the smell of flowers in the morning,” said Katie.

Laradon’s Employment Programs continue to be an important element in Katie’s growth by being a consistent resource for job trainings, employer management, and professional development opportunities.

Laradon’s Community Living Programs provide a host of services and support in order for individuals to live in the community. Whether independently or with the support of a Host Home Provider or Family Caregiver, individuals benefit from a caring support system.

Meet MichaelMichael first came to Laradon in early 2018 from a youth residential institution in Colorado. Laradon’s Community Living Program staff had worries about enrolling him in the Host Home program based on his lengthy history of maladaptive behaviors like physical aggression, property destruction, and elopement.

In addition to these worries, his staff tried numerous times to get him into behavioral services, but because he was under 21 years old, he required EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment) behavioral services, and none could be found. Despite this unique challenge, Laradon enrolled him, and he acclimated incredibly well to his new environment in a home as opposed to an institution.

He and his new Host Home Provider, Christine Silitonga, have a great relationship where she provides opportunities for community access and learning experiences for living skills like cleaning, cooking, and doing laundry. In the past year, with no behavioral services, this young man has exceeded every expectation anyone had of him, become an excellent self-advocate, and finished school. He graduated with his diploma in May 2019 and has chosen to enter the work force. When asked what he liked most about his Host Home, Michael said, “Being able to keep my freedom.” Now that Michael is thriving in his new environment, he can focus on continuing his path to independence and learning job skills that will lead to employment.

Enterprise Zone Tax CreditsLaradon is located in one of Denver’s Enterprise Zones, meaning that contributions to Laradon’s Capital Campaign and Individual Employment Programs are eligible for a tax credit of 25% from the State of Colorado. Enterprise Zone Contributions encourage community participation and public/private partnerships to revitalize economically distressed areas. If you are a Colorado taxpayer, the Enterprise Zone Tax credit may decrease your state tax liability while giving you an opportunity to invest in this vital community.

Last year alone, Laradon’s donors were able to receive an additional $9,256 in credit towards their Colorado State Taxes.
