solution.” There is a big difference!Getting a JobThe HM’s profession requires her togive out jobs, but that is a secondarytask; it is the last thing she does. Thereal ultimatum that managementputs before the HM is to findsolutions. A good example of howgiving out jobs and finding solutionsmight not go together is: a HMawards a job to a candidate whoproves not to be able to do the job.She didn’t supply a solution for herteam or the company; she just gaveout a job—every HM’s nightmare! The overwhelming response to thisHM’s challenge for a solution is astack of resumes that are very similar,in that they faithfully list all the tasksthat someone with that job wouldhave to do, and which they havedone. That makes the content of allthese resumes frighteninglyidentical. Which means the HMeither has 100 solutions, or she hasnone. Chances are, she has none.Being the SolutionWhen you send a resume that is alist of tasks you can perform, you are,in effect, promising that you will beat your position so many hours a day,and execute the standard tasks thatget this job done. This is prettyuninspiring, since in most of our jobsthere is much more involved than thestandard tasks. What about “puttingout fires,” or “addressing conflicts,”or “making changes,” or“innovating,” or “pursuingexcellence?” None of these are on thestandard job-task list. They are on

the solution list! The HM has a whole lot of resumesfrom people who believe they can dothe tasks. If she is lucky, she also mayhave a few from those who caninnovate, and be creative in theirwork, and make forward-thinkingdecisions...and can learn to do thedaily tasks, if necessary. These are thequalities she is looking for in her newhire. Perhaps you have them, but arethey represented on your resume? Ifnot, you probably won’t be thesolution.Think like a Hiring ManagerHere is a list of questions to askyourself about being the solution. They point to activities a HM wouldconsider in assessing a candidate:• Have I ever discovered a moreefficient way of completing a task, and perhaps, bringing a product to aclient early?• Have I ever thought ahead on aproject and discovered a probabledanger my team was headed for, andworked on avoiding it with the teamlead?• Have I ever brought a tense, troubled client or co-workerdisagreement to a successful, happyending?• Have I ever invited teamcollaboration on a task or projectthat would benefit from a surplus ofideas?• Have I ever stood out as a leaderand had complete support from myteam?• Have I ever designed – or

Solution......Continued from page 1

contributed to the design – of a newmodel, for anything?• Have I ever inspired a sales team toexceed all quotas?• Have I ever found a means tocapture the credibility, trust andloyalty of my customers?• Have I ever provided the solutionto a particularly sticky clientproblem?• Have I ever encouraged a changethat improved the employee qualityof life in my department?Once you get the hang of the list, and this way of thinking, write inyour own questions; there are

hundreds of possibilities! And thereare plenty of ways to be the solution.

(ARA) - In light of current economicconditions and the increased numberof people looking for a job, employersare being forced to re-evaluate andadapt their "traditional" hiring process.Today, jobseekers are not only facingthe challenge of finding a job forwhich they are qualified, but alsotrying to find a way to stand outamong the hundreds, even thousands,of other qualified applicants.

At the end of the day it's often theskilled candidate, who alsodemonstrates a legitimate enthusiasmfor the position, who wins out. Untilrecent years, the only significantchance for a jobseeker to communicatethis enthusiasm was in the usuallybrief face-to-face interview. Theonline world has changed this.

Through blogs, twitter, Facebook,LinkedIn and a plethora of others, jobseekers can be in a constant state ofcommunicating enthusiasm for theirfield, and employers are taking fulladvantage.

"Recently we were reviewingapplicants for a position in mydepartment," says Mike Pacchione, acareer advisor at The Art Institute ofPortland. "After weeding the

applicants down to three, we wereundecided between two of them andthought we'd Google them to helpmake our decision. We tried to read upon the first candidate. All we couldfind was an incomplete LinkedInprofile. There was nothing else. Thenwe turned to the second candidate. Her LinkedIn profile had peopleraving about her. Person after persondescribed her as being unselfish, dedicated and enthusiastic. A formercolleague called her an amazing co-worker and person. In short, shesounded exactly like the type of personwe wanted to hire. So we did."

This is not to say that jobseekers arehopeless without robust search resultsfor their names. By no means are yourequired to have a LinkedIn or Twitterprofile, and you certainly don't need aprofessionally produced YouTubevideo attributed to your name.

While these things might not harm ajobseeker's chances for an interview, what may hurt is the significantimpact that unmonitored tweets, postsand uploads can have on theirprofessional goals.

It is becoming standard for companiesto investigate potential employees'

online profiles before making a finaldecision. A survey conducted byMicrosoft in December 2009 reportedthat 70 percent of recruiters haverejected a candidate based on onlinereputational information. Swearing, posting party photos, talking poorlyabout work - all of these things giverecruiters an excuse to weed you out ofthe job search.

With the popularity and globalacceptance of social media, the fineline between professional and personallife has been demolished. It is pivotalfor job seekers to evaluate the messagethey are communicating online.

"Obviously most companiesunderstand conceptually that plenty ofemployees have faked being sick, havedrank too much and so on," saysPacchione. "Posting photos and statusupdates online communicates a certainpoor judgment that employersgenerally try to avoid."

All in all, when in the job search, candidates would be wise to listen towhat Seth Godin, social media guruand author of "The Purple Cow" likesto say: "Google never forgets."

That can be a good or bad thing.

Do You Have to be 'Online' in a Job Search? Younger Boss? Many workers today find themselvesanswering to managers half their age. Here are three tips to help you make themost of this workplace partnership:

• Take the InitiativeBe the first to establish yourrelationship. Ask for a meeting andoffer your support and cooperationearly. Sitting back and ignoring ayounger boss is a sure sign of hostility.

• Don’t Play a Parental RoleAvoid the classic “mothering” or“fathering” of a young manager. This iscondescending and will destroy anychance of a productive, professionalrelationship.

• Avoid Age-Based JudgmentsDon’t belittle an idea orplan just because itcame from a youngerboss. Stay objectiveand open to yourboss’s leadership.

Employment Times: Can you tell usa little about the increase in businessthat has led to the need for stitchers?

L.L. Bean: The Maine HuntingShoe has experienced a resurgencein popularity. The sale of this itemhas steadily increased over the pastyear and is projected to continue toincrease for 2011. To meetproduction demands, we need toadd both experienced leathercutters and stitchers to our currentstaff.

ET: What has your recent hiring beenlike? Where can candidates makethemselves better stand out for thisposition (experience? skills?certifications?)?

LLB: We just completed hiring forour holiday peak season. We hirecall center reps, retail store reps, pickers, packers, monogrammers, and material handlers to help ushandle the increased holidaybusiness. We were again successfulin hiring for all of these positionsthis year. What seems to surprisecandidates the most is that all of ourjobs, even in the warehouse, require

some computer usage. Candidatesshould consider taking a computercourse, especially if they have neverhad the opportunity to use acomputer in a work experience.

We are looking for bothexperienced leather cutters andstitchers for the current openings. We have high production standardsand aggressive goals to meet and arelooking for employees who haveestablished skills in these areas.

ET: What other qualities are youlooking for in an employee?

LLB: It is important thatemployees are committed to bothbeing at work and producing a highquality product. L.L. Beanproducts are known for quality—our leather cutters and stitchers willshowcase their best work in eachpair of Maine Hunting Shoesproduced.

ET: What sort of application orinterview tips can you offer topotential candidates?

LLB: The online profile or

application is a candidate’s firstopportunity to sell his/her skills. Atthis point in the process, tell useverything you can about yourskills, experiences, and education.Remember to include hobbies, activities outside of work, andvolunteer experience—these are alllearning opportunities.

ET: What are some of your employeebenefits?

LLB: Benefits for seasonalemployees include the employee

discount, which is up to 40 percent;on-site free fitness facilities; anemployee store where one can finditems of clothing for just a fewdollars. The employee store is oneof our more popular benefits forseasonal employees—there isalways a deal to be found at theemployee store!

At work initiative counts, and one way to show you’ve got it is to make good, well-thought-out suggestions. Don’t be afraid to make suggestions because

the truth is that employers want employee input. Think about it. Work is generally a set of goals and the action it takes to get those goals accomplished.

There will be problems along the way—guaranteed. Suggestions can help employers solve those problems more easily, more effi ciently and more

economically. You have to offer your suggestion with sincerity, and that means that you’re making the suggestion because you truly believe in it— that

you are not using it merely as a vehicle to get ahead. Not that there’s anything wrong with getting ahead, but others can smell self-interest in a

suggestion. Try to keep your motivation as pure as possible. Here are a few tips from 1001 Ways to Take Initiative at Work, by Bob Nelson:

Making a suggestion concerning the area where you work is a good idea. Why? Because it’s likely you know the area well, and therefore you’ll probably make a good decision. You’ll want to look for ways to save money, improve a service or streamline

processes. Think about your ideas, and if possible, test them out.

If you’re going to make a suggestion, make sure you also have a way to implement it. Nelson says that you need to be careful that your suggestion doesn’t inad vertently come off sounding like a complaint. Think your plan through. Who would be

involved? How much would it cost? What are the benefits? Then vol unteer to work on bringing the idea to fruition.

Develop yourself as a “suggestor.” Think about the

possibilities and try to come up with at least two sug gestions

per week— even if you end up not pitching them. Carry a

pad and pencil with you so you can jot down your thoughts.

You’d be surprised at the great ideas that people think of that are lost in the minutiae of the day because the person didn’t

take the time to write them down. Be supportive of others’ suggestions when you think they are good ideas. This will

help you develop important alliances at work— and the goodwill of your co-workers when you launch your own suggestions.

One of the greatest challenges thatrecent college graduates face whenentering the professional job market ishow to overcome their apparent lackof relevant job experience. It can seemto be a Catch-22: you need a job inorder to get relevant professionalexperience, but most employers won’thire you without the experience.Fortunately, overcoming this obstacleis not as difficult as it might seem ifyou follow four simple tips foremphasizing your relevant educationexperience on your resume.State you grade-point averageRight or wrong, many employersequate GPA with competence in theirfield for recent college graduates. If theGPA for your core classes issignificantly above the median foryour major, list it. The same holds truefor your overall GPA. Or, list youroverall GPA for the last two years ofcollege if it is significantly higher thanyour overall final GPA. A higher thanaverage GPA, for most employers, is asure sign for future success for jobcandidates.List relevant coursesList the courses that you took that willbe of interest to possible employers. For example, include advanced orspecial courses in your major or chosenfield. List courses that show aspecialization or skill or that will makeyou more marketable within theorganization, for example, business orcommunications courses. But don’tinclude courses that everyone in yourmajor as required to take. List onlythose that make you stand out, thatsay, “Hey, I’m unique, because...” Andmake sure that you list courses by theirofficial titles. Most employers won’tknow what Microbiology 450 is. Callit by its official title: “Microbiology450. Medical Microbiology.”

Include any relevant or specialaccomplishmentsDid you take an advanced or othersenior-level research course, work on aspecial project for one of yourprofessors, or participate in aninternship? Include the title andobjective of the project, any advancedor specialized equipment that youused, and any specialized techniquesthat you applied. And if you knowthem, include the results of the projectas well. Being able to discuss a projectand present the results marks you as aprofessional, someone who canmanage a project.Emphasize honors and awardsHave you received any scholarships, internships, or other academic or non-academic awards? List them anddescribe their purpose. Such specialhonors indicate exceptional ability tothe employer and give the impressionof success. If a number of the honorsand awards you received are non-academic, consider listing them in aseparate section of your resume called"Honors" or "Awards" instead of inthe Education section. Use your bestjudgment when deciding where thisinformation will make the mostimpact.Gaining the attention of potentialemployers can be one of the greatestchallenges that recent graduates facewhen applying for a job. But by usingthese four tips to emphasize youreducation and other specialaccomplishments on your resume, youincrease your chances of standing outfrom the crowd and being noticed forthe professional you hope to become.
