Career Services off ers career counseling, professional school advising, employment and internship opportunities, and career development resources. Our offi ce works with Saint Xavier students and alumni to clarify career aspirations, identify employment and educational opportunities, and off er counseling and support at every stage of career development.

We are a comprehensive career center with a fully trained staff dedicated to the success of all Saint Xavier students. We do not work in isolation – we work with faculty, academic advisors and other career professionals so as to maximize the success of our diverse student body.

Thirty-seven percent of graduates are continuing their education by attending graduate school.

What do we do?Four basic things:• We help students and alumni explore academic

majors, fi nd internships and jobs, launch careers, explore graduate and professional school options, and pursue their professional goals.

• We help employment recruiters, from big corporations to small agencies, discover, recruit and hire Saint Xavier students and alumni. We help with both internship hiring and entry-level career position hiring.

• We manage Cougar Jobs at www.cougarjobs.com, SXU’s 24/7 job board for students, alumni and employers.

• We help students and alumni fi ne-tune their résumés and cover letters and boost their interviewing and job searching skills.

In a sense, we are the bridge – helping students and alumni connect with their future opportunities and aiding graduate and professional schools in recruiting applicants.

Of the students graduating in 2011-2012 who took advantage of an internship experience, 69 percent said that the experience led to a job.

Freshman Year: Adjust and Explore• Explore other majors and bond with other

students in chosen major.• Develop good study habits and time

Sophomore Year: Gather Resources and Sharpen Career Goals• Develop a résumé.• Visit with Career Services staff to discuss how

volunteer and other pre-professional positions that will help you build experience and skill sets.

• Attend Career Services workshops focused on career exploration, internships, résumés and interviewing.

• If you’re struggling in classes, ask for help.• Get to know your faculty members.

Junior Year: Build Experience and Refi ne Skills• Revise your résumé and start practicing interview

skills.• Establish a LinkedIn profi le and invite friends

and contacts.• Look for part-time internships for the academic

year or full-time experiences for next summer.

Career Services’ Plan for Success• Seek out leadership opportunities in campus

or community organizations.• Take advantage of the Job Search Skills Boot

Camp or Networking Workshop.• Attend the SXU Job Fairs to identify internships

and get a preview of full-time options.• If you’re considering graduate school, talk

to advisors, faculty and Career Services staff about applications and decision criteria.

Senior Year: Organize and Get Ready to Move Forward• Plan your job search early in your senior year.• Update your résumé (and send it to Career

Services for review) and make sure you are comfortable writing cover letters geared to specifi c positions.

• Conduct an inventory of your network – identify people you know who could be helpful to you.

• Attend the SXU Job Fairs and watch for local area job fairs of interest as well.

• Fine-tune communication and leadership skills developed through work experiences, volunteer opportunities, internships and active involvement in organizations.

• Several months before graduation, begin applying to positions of interest.

Summers• Summer is a perfect time to pursue internships

and pre-professional experiences.• Begin working with Career Services staff and

networking with faculty and fellow students as early as winter break of your second year to explore summer opportunities.

• Each year, fi nd experiences that progressively strengthen your skill base and help get you closer to identifying areas of career interest.
