What are Apprenticeships?

Finding the right apprentice for your company can be a daunting task, here at Lambeth College we’re here to help smooth the path and ensure that you employ motivated, work-ready apprentices that you need for your business.

We have extensive links with a wide range of businesses and industries and our lecturers bring ‘shop floor’ expertise to their teaching.

Hiring apprentices can help businesses to grow their own talent bydeveloping a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce. Apprenticeships are available to businesses of all sizes and sectors in England, and can last anything from 12 months to 4 years.

Apprenticeships & Employers

Why have an ApprenticeshipScheme?

For employers, there are two ways of accessing apprenticeship funding, dependant on the size of company:

• Levy Payers (payroll in excess of £3m) via HMRC• SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) (payroll less than £3m) Micro SME (staff less than 50 employees)• Employer incentives available for recruting from disadvantaged youths.

In order to be eligible for apprenticeship funding (paid to provider), apprentices must be employed on a normal contract of employment and employers must agree to 20% off the job training. Employees with contracts of more than 16 hours up to 30 hours hours are still eligible but the length of apprenticeship will vary dependant on the level and contracted hours.

Apprenticeship levy: What is it and how does it work?

In April 2017 the Government changed the way Apprenticeships in Eng-land are funded. A new Apprenticeship Levy was implemented as a Payroll tax on UK employers, designed to support the creation and funding of three million Apprenticeships by 2020.

The first levy payments were taken in April 2017 and are paid through Pay As You Earn (PAYE)

• The rate for the levy is set at 0.5% of an employer’s entire salary pay bill paid to HRC• Employers receive an allowance of £15,000 per tax year to offset against levy liability• Companies who pay the levy need to use the funds from their digital account within 24 months or they will lose the digital ‘training vouchers’ irrespective of paying the tax.

Below are some of the Key facts you will need to know:

SMEs (micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) - not subject to apprenticeship levy

Employers with a salary bill less than £3 million per year (98% of employers nationally) won’t pay the levy but can still employ Apprentices or train existing staff on an Apprenticeship programme. You will be able to access government support and funding for the Apprentice through a ‘co-investing scheme’, and make a financial contribution towards the cost of any Apprenticeship training.

The Skills Funding Agency will pay 90% of the maximum funding band rate on condition the employer will be eligible for 10% of training fee up front. Contribution rates will be based on the new funding bands.

The government will encourage employers with less than 50 employees to take on 16-18 apprentices by covering all training and assessment costs. The government will pay £1,000 incentive to any employers who will train a 16-18 year old apprentice, and also for 19-24 year olds if they are a child leaving care or on Educational Healthcare Plan (Special Needs).

Anyone over 16 can apply for an Apprenticeship (no upper age limit). Lambeth College can recruit on your behalf (free of charge) or you can upskill your own staff. Apprenticeships are now a credible pathway from entry to master’s degree level.

Staff need be under a contract of employment working more than 16 hours a week. By enabling new or existing staff to undertake an apprenticeship pathway you can upskill and gain higher qualifications and career knowledge via the apprenticeship funding pathway.

There are 30 funding bands ranging from £1,500 - £27,000 which are dependent on the level of apprenticeship. This will be payable to the provider to cover training costs at all levels.
