This is an introduction to basic accounting skills, suitable for those already working in accounts who want a formal qualification, or for those seeking to initiate a transition into a career in accountancy.
The course covers finance administration, double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing principles, and purchase, sales and general ledgers.
This Level 4 qualification will enable you to become a full AAT member, and will also provide a foundation for studying the ACCA Fundamental, giving you exemption from units F1–F3 of the ACCA qualification.
The course looks at advanced accounting skills, including Limited Company accounts, complex budgeting, financial performance and analysing internal controls and systems.
This intermediate diploma will be suitable for you if you are already working in finance or have completed the Level 2 Certificate, and would like to further develop and enhance your skills.
This course will consider more complex financial processes, such as final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, reports, and returns and professional ethics.
When you have completed the Level 4 Diploma, you will be able to study Units F4–F9 of the ACCA Fundamental Examinations in order to gain Chartered Status, alongside three years of supervised, practical experience.

Management
As part of our extensive package of management and leadership qualifications, we offer various qualifications accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). CMI qualifications are available at Levels 2–7. It’s important to study at the correct level, which matches your current employment opportunities. If you are unsure what the right level is for you or your business, you can contact our team who will be able to advise you.
Team Leading – Level 2
First Line Management– Level 3
Management and Leadership– Level 5
Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship– Level 6 (Incorporating the BA (Hons)
Leadership and Management)
Strategic Management and Leadership – Level 7
This Level 2 qualification has been designed for team leaders, to support the development of their skills in leading others. You will learn how to contribute to planning, solve problems, make decisions and ensure teams work to organisational objectives.
This Level 3 qualification is perfect for supervisors and line managers who have operational responsibility within a defined area. This qualification is relevant for those with no previous management qualifications, and who wish to develop in this area.
A Level 5 qualification is ideal for middle managers and those with aspirations of working at a senior management level. This qualification focuses on more in-depth skills that are key to a successful business, such as managing resources, leadership and information management.
This Degree Apprenticeship is an exciting work-based route towards developing professionally competent Chartered Managers. You will be expected to have some prior experience in a managerial or team leader role. You will learn to plan, allocate and monitor the work of a team, support team members, manage conflict, resolve problems, project manage, agree budgets and manage customer service.
As the highest CMI qualification available, a Level 7 course is for managers in authority who wish to translate top–level organisational strategy into effective operational performance.

Human Resources
Human Resource Practice (CIPD) – Level 3
Human Resource Manager (CIPD) – Level 5
In recognition of this, our Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) courses place emphasis on understanding the business environment and the organisation itself in order to maximise the impact of human resources (HR) in workforce planning, recruitment and selection, employee relations and training. You don’t have to work in Human Resources to study a CIPD HR course. You might already be employed in an HR department, but you might also work in another area of an organisation with some responsibility for people, as a line manager or team leader, an administrator or personal assistant, an operations manager or small business owner.
This qualification will give you a broad perspective of the organisational issues facing (HR) professionals, and will enable you to develop effective analytical and problem-solving strategies. It will be suitable for you if want to improve your HR management knowledge as either an HR professional or line manager. The topics covered will include: developing HR professional practice, HR information, managing and coordinating the HR function, business and the context of HR, employment law and employee engagement.
You will automatically become an Associate Member of the CIPD on completion of this qualification.
Businesses today are operating in very competitive markets and are therefore placing a much higher value on the importance of their people.
This qualification is suitable if you are aspiring towards a career in Human Resources (HR) or learning and development, or if you wish to improve your knowledge of HR as a manager or team leader. The course will introduce you to a wide range of theory and practice in order to increase your knowledge and develop your skills. Topics include: the HR function, recruitment and selection, HR data, employment law, and coaching and mentoring.
The emphasis throughout the course is on developing skills as well as knowledge. You will gain practical experience of applying the skills you have learnt in a realistic setting. Your own HR experience will play a major part in your learning on this course, and you will be encouraged to apply new skills through role-play.
Did you know? If you can’t support an apprentice all year round (as a seasonal employer, for example), another employer can support under the shared apprenticeship scheme. We can help arrange this for you.

The College offers a dedicated Apprenticeship Recruitment Service for Employers to help you find the best fit for your business.
Apprentice Recruitment Service
The recruitment service can be completed in six stages:
Your dedicated Workplace Coordinator will support you in completing a vacancy template. This template is an opportunity to promote your Apprenticeship vacancy and will include a vacancy overview, role description, working pattern, wage and start date.
Our apprenticeship team will submit your vacancy onto the ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ page on the www.gov.uk website.
Your apprenticeship vacancy will be advertised nationally as well as through our South Devon College Jobshop to our existing students.
Once your vacancy closes, your dedicated Workplace Coordinator will check each application to ensure eligibility and suitability.
You will then be required to shortlist and interview the applicants.
Upon successfully appointing your new apprentice you will need to inform your Workplace Coordinator and agree the Employment/Apprenticeship start date.

For companies who pay less than £3 million on their payroll, including SMEs, the new mandatory cash contribution from companies will be 10%. This is a considerable reduction compared to plans previously announced by the Government, when the proposal was that companies, including SMEs, would pay one third of the apprenticeship training costs.
This payment can be spread over the duration of the apprenticeship or paid in full. The minimum monthly payment is £25.00 and therefore in some cases the cost may be spread over fewer months.
Examples:
Chartered Manager Degree Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship Funding value £27,000 – you will contribute £2,700 (£112.50 a month)
Wood Occupations Level 2 Apprenticeship Funding value £6,000 – you will contribute £600 (£25.00 a month)
When employers take on a 16 to 18 year old on an apprenticeship framework or standard, they will receive £1,000 to help meet the extra costs associated with this. This will be paid to employers in two equal instalments at 3 months and 12 months. Initially, these payments will be made to employers via their training provider, who will pass the money on. These payments will come direct from the government and will not be deducted from an employer’s digital account.
Please note: Information correct at time of printing. Changes may occur due to circumstances beyond the College’s control.
Did you know? There are often government funded projects available to both employers and staff. A range of funding sources are routinely searched to identify potential project funds by a dedicated team based at South Devon College. The Advanced Learner Loan is also available to support learners with course fees.

Apprenticeship Funding Information
Levy paying employers
Does the apprenticeship levy apply to my business?
How much will my business have to pay?
How will the fee be paid?
How does a business access their funds?
From 1st May 2017, the way the government funded apprenticeships changed. As a result, some employers are required to contribute to a new apprenticeship levy and there are changes to the funding for apprenticeship training for all employers.
You will pay the apprenticeship levy if you are an employer with a pay bill of more than £3 million each year. For the purposes of the levy, an ‘employer’ is someone who is a secondary contributor, with liability to pay Class 1 Secondary National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for their employees.
The levy will be charged at a rate of 0.5% of your annual pay bill. You will have a levy allowance of £15,000 per year to offset against the levy you must pay. This means you will only pay the levy if your pay bill exceeds £3 million in a given year.
The levy allowance will operate on a monthly basis and will accumulate throughout the year. This means you will have an allowance of £1,250 a month. Any unused allowance will be carried from one month to the next. For example, if your levy liability in month 1 is £1,000 you will not pay the levy and your allowance in month 2 will be £1,500.
If you have some unused allowance in a month, but paid the levy previously in the tax year, you can receive a credit which you can use to offset against your other Pay As You Earn (PAYE) liabilities. The credit will also reduce the amount of levy paid.
This example uses an employer with an annual pay bill of £5,000,000:
Levy sum: 0.5% x £5,000,000 = £25,000
Subtracting levy allowance: £25,000 – £15,000 = £10,000 annual levy payment.
You will calculate, report and pay your levy to HMRC, through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) process alongside tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs). If you have calculated that you will pay the apprenticeship levy, you will need to declare this and include it in your usual PAYE payment to HMRC by the 19th (or 22nd if you report electronically) of the following month.
