What is BIM?

Who here has worked in a

BIM environment?

What Is BIM?

Process that runs through the full lifecycle of a customer’s asset (Cradle to Grave)

What is Building Information Modelling?

BIM is essentially value creating collaboration through the entire life-

cycle of an asset, underpinned by the creation, collation and exchange of shared 3D models and intelligent, structured data attached to them.

What is BIM - Summary

“BIM is a Culture, not just a 3D Model and not just software

or technology”

• 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D approach to developing and maintaining an asset

• It is a rich information source containing geometric, visual, dimensional and process data

• It runs through the full lifecycle of a customer’s asset (Cradle to Grave)

• BIM is a 2016 Government Requirement

• It comprises an Integrated Common Data Environment to which all involved parties contribute – a ‘virtual version’ of the asset

Why BIM?

Why BIM? – Government Requirement

A report for the Government Construction Client Groupwas produced in March 2011 as a strategy paper by the Building Information Modelling (BIM) Working Party

They reported:

In May 2011 this became “Government Construction Strategy” stating that:

Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM as a minimum by 2016 – i.e.. its contractors will be working at Level 2 or above

Lower Costs

33%reduction in the initial cost

of construction and the whole life cost of built

assets

Lower Emissions

50%Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the built

environment

Government MandateSupporting

2025 Aspirations

Faster Delivery

50%reduction in the overall time, from inception to

completion, for newbuild and refurbished assets

So in Summary:-

2D - Something with 2 dimensions (flat)3D - Something seen in 3 dimensions e.g. width, length and height.4D - Adding the aspect of Time to a project (phasing/sequencing)5D - Adding the aspect of Cost to a project (cost estimating)6D - The aspect of Life Cycle Management (owner/FM)

BIM Protocols & Common Data / Live Environment

Integrated Common Data EnvironmentRuns through the full lifecycle of a customer’s asset

Creating Collaboration

Page 15: EMPA Forum 2015 Workshop 3 - Endeavour BIM (Building Information Modelling) (2 nd Lesson) & Using Augmented Reality February 2015.

• Optimised Design, Cost & Programme Certainty

• Ability to View the Virtual Asset (Leading To….)

• Better Client, Stakeholder, Project Team, and Supply Chain Engagement

• Better Outcomes Through Improved Project Collaboration

• Greater Predictability

• Faster Project Delivery - Promotes Efficiencies – Eliminates Clashes

• Reduced Waste (Controlled Quantity Take Off / Pre-fabrication & Assembly)

• Reduced Risk (Early Safety and Virtual Asset Reviews)

• Right 1st Time

• Provides an Asset Control Mechanism

BIM – The Benefits (Across 3D, 4D, 5D & 6D)
