The Neuro-anatomy of Leadership-The Brain

The workings of the amygdala and its interplay with the neocortex are at the heart of emotional intelligence… This is very boring and we will skip all the details for now…

“Why is it some days I feel like my head is going to explode!”

Page 6: Emotional Intelligence- The key to Leadership_ Full House Version

Emotions are contagious• The brain has an ‘open

loop’ system.• We are ‘wired’ to pick

up subtle clues from one another.

• Resonance is contagious…so is dissonance.

• If a leader resonates energy and enthusiasm, his or her organization thrives.

• If a leader spreads negativity and dissonance, it flounders.

• This concept charges leaders with driving emotions in the right direction to have a positive effect on earnings or strategy

Emotional Intelligence

"Anyone can become angry -- that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right

purpose, and in the right way-that is not easy.“~Aristotle

Emotional Intelligence refers to the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships.” ~Goleman

"The ability to control my emotions and actions sets

me apart from other men." -- Navy SEAL Creed

Emotional Intelligence: The Five Domains

• Knowing one’s emotions,Self-awareness - recognizing a feeling as it happens - is the keystone of emotional intelligence. People with greater certainty about their feelings are better pilots of their lives and have a surer sense of how they really feel about personal decisions from whom to marry to what job to take.

• Managing emotions,People who are poor in this ability are constantly battling feelings of distress, while those who excel in it can bounce back far more quickly from life's setbacks and upsets. This domain describes the capacity to soothe oneself, to shake off anxiety, gloom or irritability, and the consequences of failing to do so.

• Motivating oneself,Emotional self control, that is being able to delay gratification and stifle impulsiveness, underlies accomplishment of every sort. People who have this skill tend to be more highly productive and effective in whatever they undertake.

• Recognizing emotions in others,People who are empathic are more tuned to the subtle social signals that indicate what others need or want. • Handling Relationships. The art of relationships is, in large part, the skill required to manage emotions in others. People who excel in these skills do well at anything that relies on interacting smoothly with others.

• Think of a leader for whom or with whom you worked- one that you try to avoid, left you wishing for more, Who would help your organization more by working for a competitor.
