Daniel Goleman’s model – (1995) Goleman created the first model of emotional intelligence that was linked to the amygdala, which is associated with fear and aggression. Theory of emotional intelligence contains four elements; Self-management, Self-Awareness, Social management and social awareness. Goleman stated that there were two distinctions between these domains. These distinctions include; personal/social and recognition/regulation. Personal – Prof. Snape & Draco Malfoy (self). Social – Tom Riddle & Belatrix Lestrange (social). Recognition – Draco Malfoy & Belatrix Lestrange (awareness). Regulation – Prof. Snape & Tom Riddle (management).
Bar-On model - (1997 & 2005) Bar-On’s model has biological origins and links emotional intelligence to Darwin’s Evolutionary Theory. This theory suggested emotional expression was key for adaption and survival. From an evolutionary viewpoint having good social skills (EQ) leads to increased cooperation, adaption and therefore survival. Nowadays, successfully dealing with the environmental demands of life (for example, the demands of a 9-5 job) involves understanding oneself and others. We must relate well to people, adapte and cope with the immediate surroundings.
Luna shows the General Mood domain, she is optimistic and happy, and very good at lifting the mood. She is
also particularly skillful at staying motivated and motivating others.
Hermione demonstrates Stress Management scales, she constantly adapts to solve problems that she faces, of a
personal or interpersonal nature.
Ron displays the Adaptability domain. He can manage and
control his emotions even in times of high stress, for example when he is playing chess. He remains focused and
does not let fear cloud his judgment.
Harry shows the Interpersonal Skills domain. He understands how others around him are feeling, and can
empathize with their emotions. He has many interpersonal relationships, evident in the strong army he assembles, to
fight Lord Voldemort
Dumbledore is an independent man that is assertive and has high self-regard. The ability to recognise, understand and
express emotions means he exhibits the Intrapersonal Skills domain.
Prof. Snape displays Self-Management because he
has feelings for Harry’s mother. However he controls his emotions in order to protect Harry and acts as a
double agent against Voldemort. This shows the ability to manage and maintain one’s own emotional
state and interpersonal relationships.
Draco Malfoy shows the Self-Awareness element, he has a firm understanding of who he is and what he stands for.
Also who his family are and his connections. This is an emotional intelligence that allows us to identify with our
own as well as others emotional states.
Tom Riddle is able to maintain good interpersonal relationships, therefore demonstrates Social Management.
He charms everyone, clear by the large number of followers he has. He also charms Prof. Slughorn about creating horcruxes. He shows the similar dimension of
emotional intelligence as Snape.
Bellatrix Lestrange shows Social Awareness as she is able to assess and influence emotions of the people around her. For
example she knows how to assess purity and manipulate mudbloods. This is a similar kind of emotional intelligence
exhibited by Draco Malfoy.
The use of feelings to mo/vate, plan, and achieve success in one's life.
A set of skills that contributes to the accurate assessment and expression of emo/on in oneself and in others.
