Emotion recognition...what it is...and why I love it
Cassandra Oduola • Sept 2016
“The most important question of life are indeed, for the most part, really only problems of probability.” ~Laplace
Probability is the likelihood an event will occur
quantified between 0 & 1.
Probability Theory: Analysis of random phenomena such as stochastic events
What is Random?
Water
People
Weather
People Water Weather
People Water Weather
I started my journey modeling turbulence
How does turbulence move?
Can be abstracted to the path of each particle in relation to time.
In physics we call this the uncertainty principle
In prob theory: Conditional probability P(A|B)
I realized this can be applied to other fields
“If you cannot measure it you cannot manage it.
Affect, like weather, is hard to measure; and like
weather, it probably cannot be predicted with
perfect reliability. But, if we can do significantly
better than random, then people will at least be less
likely to get caught in a thunder-storm without an
umbrella.”
Predicting Emotions
Why is emotion recognition hard?
Do you know your emotional patterns?
Some emotions are easier to quantify than others:Happy, Sad, Angry
But what about Righteousness? Loathing? Intrigue?
Furthermore what is the order of these emotions?
(Angry → Happy ) Unlikely (Bipolar?)
(Surprised → Happy) Very likely
Happy Sad
Fear
We need the probability of when an emotion will occur as well as a quantification of each emotion.
