Emotion-annotated corpora
By this I mean corpora (which have been compiled for all sorts of otherreasons) tagged with
information that the lexical item mentionsrefersdescribes anemotion by means of its dictionary meaningwhich emotion(s) based on the assignment of all lexical items to somefieldsemotion groups
Both are linguistic tasks that require interpretation and that can onlyimprecisely be done automatically Therefore one of the points of doingthis is precisely to investigate how useful this can be for the study ofemotions in language an empirical question

Very briefly what corpora
Ever since launching Linguateca we have been working to make corporaavailable to the public both Web access and full download
monolingual corpora of Portuguese compiled by most groups thatwork in Portuguese NLP (very few did not give us access) and someby us amouning to ca 5 billion wordshttpwwwlinguatecaptACDC
parallel corpora compiled by Linguateca some years after ENPC andacknowledging its influence but also with significant differences inaligned units COMPARA (100000) CorTrad (46300) PoNTE(32000) and PANTERA (13000) httpwwwlinguatecaptCOMPARA|CorTrad|PoNTE|PANTERA

Cultural norms
My operational definition of culture is the ranking of values (andemotional values) While emotions can be universal the way they aresocially and linguistically aprehended and accepted or restrained is amajor cultural difference even among cultures so ldquosimilarrdquo asNorwegian and PortugueseTherefore I am interested in finding evidence (empirical linguisticevidence) for different rankings involving the ldquosamerdquo emotions aswell as diferent attention to different parts of the emotional spectrum
Diana Santos (UiO) Travelling emotions 17 Feb 2016 11 24
Some cultural differences
Very generally Germanic languages are focused on reality (facts howthe world is) while Romance languages are focused on moral valuesTherefore there should be much more differentiation on ldquomoralrdquoemotions (those that are endowed with a judgment as well) inPortuguese than in NorwegianParticular emotions have different (almost opposite) connotations inPortuguese and Norwegian Example ciuacutemes and sjalu (jealousy)Particular emotions have different application areasobjects such asrespeito vs respekt (respect)Particular emotions are lexically connected in some languages and notin others admirar can convey (both) surprise and respect etc
Diana Santos (UiO) Travelling emotions 17 Feb 2016 12 24
Where is the ldquotravellingrdquo
One instance of the ldquotravellingrdquo is in translation and one (of themany) way(s) we can study the travelling of concepts is by looking attranslation in the particular cases when these words appearOther ways could be by looking at the path these diachronic ldquowordsrdquohave travelled (since proto-Indo-European ) or at their contactthrough history (Norwegian from German from Latin) (applicationat ILOS with Elizaveta Khachaturyan)
In my case I am going to use direct (modern) translation betweenPortuguese and Norwegian as a tool given the existence (or moreaccurately the ongoing process of building) Norwegian-Portuguese parallelcorpora

Respeito in Portuguese which emotion group
A different but vexing question is where do the words connected withrespect appear in our emotion groups
some in admiraccedilatildeo (admiration)some in humildade (humbleness)some in medo (fear)some in orgulho (pride)
Is this the proof that our emotion groups make no sense Or that someemotions are connected precisely through lexical means
