Invitation… Holy Child 'Camino' - 7th May

As part of our Pope John Paul II commitment we have planned a special mini 'Camino Walk' in Dublin City. This will take place on Saturday, 7th May. There are seven stages on this walk; each stage will involve a visit to a Church of significance in Dublin, beginning at 10.30am in the Pro-Cathedral, with a visit to the Holy Door to mark the Jubilee Year of Mercy initiated by Pope Francis last November. We envisage finishing the walk with a light lunch at 1pm in St Paul's Church on Arran Quay. Each participant will be issued with a HCK 'Camino Passport' - this will be stamped in each Church to recognise their participation in this special event. This is an opportunity for the HCK school community to walk together, to chat and pray, and to get to know each other. Students, parents, family members and all school staff are welcome. Sign up details will be emailed to you after Easter.

This term began on 6th January with a lovely celebration of Mass for the Epiphany; this is a special day for the Holy Child Sisters - they have a community gathering and renew their religious vows. We held a birthday party for Cornelia Connelly on 15th January, and we were delighted to welcome Sr. Madeleine to the celebrations. The PowerPoint and photos of this event are on the website - everyone thoroughly enjoyed this highlight in the school year. The annual Cornelia Connelly competition has been launched, and the final date to submit entries is 8th April. I encourage every girl to get involved in this competition; it is a great opportunity to learn about Cornelia Connelly and her teachings, and to win some lovely prizes, including inscribing the winners' names on the Honour Board.

The Ministers of the Eucharist assisted at the Ash Wednesday Mass and blessed those who attended with ashes, which was a special experience for all. As we journey through Lent we have Mass in the school chapel each Wednesday morning, which is always a lovely break and prepares us for the hectic day ahead. Finally, I would like to wish the four girls who are participating in the Pope John Paul II Award Programme the best of luck in planning their Pilgrim Walk around some of the most interesting churches in Dublin City. I hope that both parents and students will join us on Saturday, 7th May. Thank you to all the girls on the Chaplaincy team and the Ministers of the Eucharist for all their hard work and support. I would like to wish you all an enjoyable Easter break!

Wesley Interschool's Festival

On Friday 4th March, the choirs of Holy Child Killiney took part in the Wesley Interschool’s Festival in Wesley College. Under the directorship of our conductor Ms. Regina McDonald, both our Junior and Senior choir were entered in three different categories. The Holy Child Junior Choir placed first in the Epworth Cup singing “Dream a Little Dream of Me” beating off strong opposition from ten other schools. In the SSA category, Holy Child placed third singing “Bring a Little Water Sylvie”. In the SSAA category, the choir performed the song “We Are the Voices”. It was a fantastic day out for our choirs and we are so proud of what they have achieved. We would also like to say a huge congratulations to Sarah McGoldrick in First Year who was placed second in the Wesley Interschools Piano Solo U14 Competition. Well done to Siofra Drohan and Martha McKinney-Perry who also competed in the Vocal Duet U15 Competition.

There has been great achievement within every department of the school this term. In the

sporting department the Junior A and Minor A hockey teams both won the final in the

Leinster cup. The school showed great support as always at both matches, with enthusiastic

cheerleading taking place at half time. The basketball teams were also very successful in

making their way to the semi-finals of the South Dublin Basketball League. The Junior Choir

recently won the Wesley Competition with the whole school choir coming third. We also

want to congratulate all the 3rd and 6th Years who had a challenging term with Mock

Examinations at the beginning of February and to thank the teachers for all the support they

gave during those few weeks. We hope everyone takes the opportunity over the break to

relax and that you all come back to school feeling fresh and reenergised for the last term.

The Wizard of Oz The TY musical, The Wizard of Oz, took place earlier this year from 27th to 29th January. The show was a great success. We had a full house on all three nights this year and it was great to see so many parents, family and friends of all the girls in the audience to support them. We would like to give a huge thanks to Mr. Brian Murphy the musical director and Mr. Pat Howe the director/chorographer and Ms. McDonald for all the work they put in throughout the rehearsals. We would like to thank Ollie Hennessy and all the performers in the band with special thanks to Sara Brophy from 2nd Year and Hannah Collins who joined them, both playing violin. Everyone was blown away by the incredible set and costumes in the show. This is down to the work of Ms. Deborah McCann and her backstage team who created the world of Oz for the audience. Many thanks to the KPA and all of the parents in the school who helped out with the show throughout its run. We are delighted to announce that next year’s show will be “All Shook Up”, a musical based on the music of Elvis Presley, so watch out for the current 3rd Years when they take to the stage in January 2017!

On World Book Day 2016, traditional Irish storyteller, Niall de Burca visited the 1st and 2nd Years. We were all very excited and as we took our seats we could see him setting up the stage area with some props that he had brought. He introduced himself and started with a warm up short story about 'The Great Spirit'. This story was

not too dissimilar to the story of Adam and Eve and the Creation of the Earth but he put a hilarious spin on things by imitating as people from different nationalities receiving gifts from the spirit- complete with a lot of laughs from us.

He then listed some of his most popular scary stories and asked us which one we would like to hear. It was by majority vote that we chose 'Come Here My Love'. This was a chilling tale of The Famine where a couple who lived in the Dublin Mountains are struggling to find food until the wife receives a vision from her ancestors that she must go out to hunt deer. Her husband becomes so ravenous with hunger and freezing cold while she is gone that he destroys all the furnishings to use for firewood and tears himself limb from limb for food until there was only a skeleton left. This provoked a lot of screaming and jump scares from us! The husband attempts to eat her too but the wife escapes with the help of her ancestors. This story perfectly intertwined with our Irish curriculum and Seachtain na Gaelige as he told us the story in both English and Irish.

He then finished with an uplifting and empowering story about a strong Maori woman who broke away from her controlling father to be with a slave.

We then had an opportunity to ask Niall some questions, like why he wanted to become a storyteller.

In conclusion it was an amazing experience; Niall spoke so eloquently and had a way with words that really drew you into the world of the story. It really added to the overall magic of Book Week.

Thank you to Ms. Flannery, the Librarian, who organised this event.

As many of you know, seventeen 5th Years from the Development Education group partook in a trip to Kolkata, India with the Hope Foundation at the beginning of February. The Hope Foundation is a registered Irish organisation that rescues thousands of children from the streets and slums of Kolkata, helping to improve their quality of life, and to give them the best chance of getting the best future possible. Hope works to free street children and poor families from lives of pain, abuse and poverty. They house these children in one of the many Hope homes spread across Kolkata, providing them with the vital shelter, safety and sense of belonging they deserve.

At the beginning of the school year, each of us agreed to meet a fundraising goal, which was to be raised through fundraising events in the months leading up to the trip. We held a movie night, a wine tasting event, a raffle, dinner parties, bake sales, multiple bag packs, a pub quiz, a house warming, and some of us even jumped into the freezing Forty Foot on Christmas morning! Safe to say, we were determined to reach our goal. The fact that we knew that every single cent of the money we raised would go straight to the children, motivated us even further.

In the early hours of the morning on Thursday, 4th February, we set off with Mrs. Mooney, Ms. McDevitt and Therese on a trip that none of us would ever forget. All of our preconceptions were thrown out of the window within minutes of touching down in Kolkata Airport. It was like nothing any of us had ever experienced before. Throughout the week, we managed to squeeze in some of the culture around the city when we had some free

time, including Mother Theresa’s home, a Jain temple, the markets, the Hugli river, and even participating in early morning laughing yoga, to name a few things! However, more importantly, the majority of our time was spent visiting many of the homes the Hope Foundation had set up for the street and slum children, and all of us agreed that they were some of the happiest places we had ever had the joy of experiencing. The warm smiles, open arms, and heartfelt, genuine appreciation towards us were perhaps the most rewarding aspects of the trip, and it is something we never got tired of. Even in some of the more intense places we visited, like the slums or the city dump, there was a constant atmosphere of sheer happiness that made you temporarily forget where you were.

The children inspired each and every one of us, and the strength and positivity they radiated in such bleak situations was contagious. It put everything into perspective for us, and certainly gave us the opportunity to reflect on just how lucky we are. We all hope to return to Kolkata at some point in the near future, which proves just how much of a positive impact this trip had on us. It would be a lie to say that the fundraising was a breeze; but seeing the bright eyes and beautiful smiles greet us wherever we went, made every single second of work pay off.

On the 23rd February some Transition Year students took part in a creative writing workshop at Fighting Words, a creative writing centre founded by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love, designed to help students of all ages develop and improve their writing skills.

When we arrived, two students were picked to improvise a dialogue for a given scenario. It was written down, and then we decided what the characters’ personalities were like and what they looked like.

The story was printed out and everyone finished it by themselves. After we were done writing, we could read the stories out to the group. Some were funny, others were serious. It was amazing to see how easily you can create a story, all you need is a pen, paper and a little bit of imagination. Naomi Tilles & Lisette Haecker

Book Week 2016 was a fantastic success which saw students from each year take time out of their busy academic schedules to pick up a book and get reading. Over the last few years Book Week has become firmly established as the school’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of literature. Events such as Drop Everything and Read, Blind Date with a Book, and Who Wants to Be a Word Millionaire raised the profile of reading for pleasure throughout the school; while competitions for best student shelfie (a picture or portrait of your bookshelf) saw our students get creative in an effort to win a coveted Scrumdiddly’s ice-cream voucher.

The once-off events were also a huge hit. Every lunch time the library was packed with people eager to take part in the celebrations – from book quizzes to book sales we managed to raise over €130 for St. Michael’s House. A huge thank you is in order to all of our library prefects who sacrificed their lunch time to run the sale, and ultimately made this generous donation possible.

Let’s Make it ONE MILLION! Thanks to all the parents who have helped us to raise €954,059 towards the building of our new Sports Hall! We are half way to covering the total cost of our Sports Hall! It is very gratifying to see our small community working hard to give our students the facilities they deserve! We are very grateful and more than a little proud!

We are hoping to make the ONE MILLION mark by the end of March! Do get in touch with Melissa on 086 604 2849 or on [email protected] if you would like to support the Campaign for Holy Child Killiney! Or please send in your Pledge Form if we have already spoken! Please get involved, we need your help to deliver excellence in education and secure the future of our school.

Thank you!

Transition Year News

The American Exchange On the morning of the 14th February, eight Killiney girls welcomed eight American girls to Ireland.

The first couple of days that they were here we were on mid-term break, which gave the American girls time to get over their jetlag and to get to know our families. During mid-term we took part in some great activities, such as going on the Viking Splash tour around Dublin and going to see the book of Kells. We also did a group trip to Belfast which was very enjoyable. While we were in Belfast, we got to see the Titanic Museum, W5 and we went on a black taxi tour around Belfast showing us the main areas associated with The Troubles. These activities brought us all closer together.

On the first day of school after mid-term, Chloe Whelan’s mom surprised everyone in our year with pastries for breakfast. James also made us tea and coffee to go with our pastries. During the first few days the girls got to know the rest of the year group and got a taste of what the Irish school system is like. It is very different to the American school system, as we’ve been told.

During the past few weeks that the girls have been here, we have created some great memories and made new friends. Some of our memories were created at Zipit, Belfast, many shopping trips and we look forward to creating more memories in the remainder of the time that the girls are here and again when we fly over to America.

Having the American exchanges here has been a great opportunity and they have definitely added a lot more fun to our year. It has been nice to have new faces and to be able to make new friends. It will always be a time that we will look back on and smile.

TY go to Court!

All Transition Year students got the opportunity to visit the new Criminal Courts in Dublin this year. Our class went on Wednesday, 20th January. On entering we had to put our bags through the scanner for security reasons, which made the whole experience seem more serious and important. A barrister came to speak to us to give us the low down on the building, explaining to us how and why it was built. We then

performed our own mock trial in an actual courtroom! Lily was the judge and I was the solicitor for the defence. Following this we went to view an actual court in session. It was the opening statements so luckily we got to hear all the facts of the case while we were there. We could tell it was going to be a very important case as there were fifteen jury members. Their difficult task was to ensure justice was served.

It was very interesting to see how an important case like that operated and it also showed us what a career in law would be like. Some of us found it intriguing, while others were completely turned off a career in law. However, it was clear that a huge amount of work went into each side’s case.

It was a very enjoyable experience for us and we would like to thank Ms. Dempsey for organising this and Ms. Foody for accompanying us. Who knows how many High Court judges, barristers and solicitors there may be among us!

Katie O'Sullivan and Lily Mahon.

Hockey Junior Premier League and Minor Cup Champions

Two was the magic number for Holy Child this week. The Junior A team won the Premier League for the very first time in its current format with a strong 2-1 victory over St. Andrews, while the Minor A’s scored in extra-time beating Muckross 2-1 to claim the Minor Cup. It is the first time in recent years that two major A-level trophies have been won by the school in the same year.

In the Premier final it was the second match St. Andrews and H.C.K. had this season, playing out a 1-1 draw in the first game of the league. The first half was fairly even, both teams trading blows. Killiney created a lot down the right hand side, making full use of Sarah Healy’s pace at right wing. Ali Donnelly of St. Andrews broke the deadlock against the run of play five minutes into the second half. Killiney responded by attacking straight from tip off putting Andrews on the back foot for much of the rest of the second half. Anna Daly linked up well with Emma Patterson down the left side while Sarah Healy, Laura Noble and Vivienne Fitzgerald wreaked havoc down the right. They were rewarded for their hard work five minutes later when Sarah slotted past the keeper to make it 1-1. Caroline Mathews controlled the middle of the pitch throughout the game. With seven minutes to go, Emma Murphy’s sliding finish from Sarah’s cross put Killiney 2-1 up. St. Andrews pushed for an equaliser of their own but were unable to capitalise on a number of corners. Ava Costello and her team held firm and saw the game off, much to the delight of the pitch side supporters.

The Minors had a big act to follow the next day, but they did not disappoint. Two goals from Lia Moloney earned them their first Minor Cup win in five years. Muckross started the stronger of the two sides, attacking with pace of turnovers and putting Holy Child’s back four under serious pressure. Unfortunately, for Muckross it only resulted in a handful of unconverted corners. Hannah Murphy made some powerful runs from right mid with Suzanna Winkelmann and the forward line were unlucky not to capitalise on their chances.

Killiney upped their game in the second half. In the centre of the pitch, Laura Noble and the Muckross centre mid, Charlie Browne battled well. Eventually after some good build up play, Lia Moloney slapped home at the back post to go ahead 1-0. Muckross upped their attack but Cora Winslow marshalled her defence well. Muckross soon drew level with a well taken short corner from Helen Barr. Holy Child entered extra time with renewed energy levels and soon it fell to Lia Moloney to get the winner. A hard cross played in across the

goal, which she deflected in with an outstretched reverse stick, wrapped up the game.

Congratulations to Ava, Laura and your teams. This has been a massive achievement and it’s come from your hard work and dedication throughout the year. The future of hockey in Holy Child is very bright.

Elsewhere this season, the Senior A’s finished in the league top 6 but missed out on the final four after a loss to Mt. Anville. They also made it to the Senior cup quarter finals but lost to a strong Muckross side. The Senior B’s and C’s found themselves in tough leagues but finished mid table. The Junior B’s were in a similar situation and also finished mid table. The Junior and Minor C teams both made it to the quarter finals of their leagues and the Minor B’s had a great league run making it to the league semi-finals.

Cheiliúramar ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ ón 7ú Márta go dtí an 16ú Márta i mbliana. Bhí a lán eachtraí ar siúl i mbliana agus bhí Tionól Naomh Pádraig agus Lá an Fhorógra ar an Máirt 15ú Márta.Bhí ceardlann bodhráin agus ceardlann ar an Táin ag

an Idirbhliain. Chomh maith leis sin bhain an Dara Bliain an-taitneamh as an scannán Amhrán na Mara san IFI. Mar is gnách, bhí an-chraic ag na daltaí ag déanamh tráth na gceist, rince Gaelach agus póstaeir seanfhocail. Bhí imeachtaí difriúla ar siúl sna ranganna Gaeilge ar Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916 freisin chun comóradh a dhéanamh air. Ag an Tionól Naomh Pádraig & Lá an Fhorógra insíodh scéal Naomh Padraig agus ardaíodh an bhratach. Rinne Sarah Brophy, Helena Gribben agus Abbie Russell rince Gaelach iontach. Chomh maith leis sin chas cúpla dalta port álainn ar uirlisí Gaelacha. Bhuail na ceoltóirí traidisiúnta ‘Ardua’ isteach chugainn agus sheinn siad Óró Sé Do Bheatha Abhaile. An tráthnóna sin sheinn Ardua don Chéad, Dara, Ceathrú agus Cúigiú Bliain.Ba bhreá linn buíochas a ghabháil leis an bhfoireann a thug an-tacaíocht don Roinn Ghaeilge Seachtain na Gaeilge a cheiliúradh. Tá súil againn gur bhain gach duine taitneamh agus sult as Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016 agus go ndéanfaidh sibh bhur ndícheall bhur gcuid Gaeilge a chleachtadh chomh minic agus is féidir. (skiing) and to Kaci Rock who won the

Michael Andrews Memorial

Tournament and who most recently

won her fight in Gorey (boxing).

Basketball We could say it has been a tough year in Basketball

because for the first time in the past five years HCK

will not be in a basketball final. Yet, we have had

four teams make it to the semi-final only to lose in Jr

A by a basket to Cluny, fall short by six to Beaufort in

minor B1, lose to Dalkey in minor B2 and drop

points to Beaufort in Jr B. What is worth noting is

that HCK competes against big basketball schools

like Cluny, Colaiste Iosagain and Muckross. Many of

these schools have players who play on club teams.

At HCK we have one club player but what is unique

at HCK is that we have very committed players and

coaches and great facilities. It has been a great year

in Basketball having a full season of home games for

the first time in our new Sports Hall. So there is

much to be thankful for and we are optimistic that

we can make a good stand in the All-Ireland

Basketball league in the very near future. Many

players have made great strides this year on the

court most notably Laura Smith in 6th Year, Sophie

Mc Sweeney and Sadhbh Mc Caul in 5th Year, Lucy

Hanrahan and Sarah Maher in TY, Lia Moloney, Lilia

Rogers, Suzanna Winklemann, Hannah Murphy and

Siobhan Fitzgerald in 2nd Year and our newcomers

(1st Years) have shown great promise and make the

future of Basketball look very exciting at HCK and

they include Leonie Judge, Ellie Rose Mason, Julia

Trane, Eve Herbert, Blaithin Butler, Ellie Daly, Ella

MC Cambridge, Hannah Cox and Hannah Quigley.

Many thanks to our parents who kindly give their

time to transport teams to away matches and who

support our students whether they win or lose.

Great year for the Minor A Cross Country athletes who achieved a third place finish in the DCU invitational race. Minor B, Junior A’s and Inters claimed a medal in the East Leinster’s. Sarah Healy won the East Leinster’s, Leinster’s and for the third year in a row has won the gold medal in the All-Ireland Cross Country Event. This is a remarkable feat for Sarah considering how competitive the field is. Sarah has not been beaten in Athletics Cross Country or Athletics Track and Field in the last three years. A very modest athlete who is a silent “work horse”. She makes running look easy but we all know it is far from easy. Many miles are clocked in training in order to stand a chance in big events. She runs like a gazelle and never has a complaint. A very well respected athlete in her field with outstanding achievements. Well done Sarah Healy and many thanks to Rosanna Baker who trains our student athletes.

Athletics Track and Field Try-outs

Athletics Track and Field coaches will conduct a Try-out for students on March 12th, 2016 from 9am-12pm at HCK.

Tennis Try-outs for 1st Years will be held on Saturday, March 12th, and Try-outs for all other years will begin on March 14th, 2016.

Tennis Lessons are available so please sign up asap. Forms have been emailed to parents and must be returned no later than March 16th, 2016. These lessons are extremely reasonable and are for all levels. They are

Golf If anyone is interested in playing on a Golf Team please inform Ms Byrne asap.

Did you know... We offer table officials courses for our TY students. It is mandatory to have certified table officials at each match. I would like to especially thank Sarah Maher, Lucy Hanrahan, Laura Smith, Katelyn Hallam and Sophie Mc Sweeney for giving so generously of their time in helping us hold home matches and tournaments at HCK. In August, 2016 we will hold a referee course and hope to have many students attend. Again this will enable us at HCK have our students help officiate our matches.

KPA News It has been a very busy and productive term. We were all very excited to come back after Christmas and have the musical, The Wizard of Oz, to look forward to. It was a super production and we congratulate all involved. Our TY KPA representatives Niamh and Dee did a super job on coordinating the catering on rehearsal weekend and the raffle on each night of the show. They were supported by many of the 4th Year parents. On the 26th February the KPA had our annual fundraiser. It was a cheese and wine tasting evening in Whelehans. Tickets had sold out early and it was a huge success. The wine tasting session was informative and there was an auction conducted by Mr. Sean Buckley who entertained us hugely. Items auctioned included a pair of Katie Taylors boxing gloves kindly donated by a parent. As always parents were so generous either through their attendance or donating a raffle prize. We are so grateful for the continued support of parents through their support of the fundraiser and the voluntary subscription of €30 per family (now payable on VSWare). This allows us to continue to run events and support the school. We congratulate the girls on their sporting and musical achievements this term. There has been so much success and excitement in both of these areas. We wish our exam years all the best in their oral and practical examinations. We are thinking of them all.
